Did you have a giant baby? How did they grow as a child?

DD is 5 months and quite large. She was large at birth (9 pounds at 38 weeks). She’s above the 91st percentile for weight and literally off the chart for height. She barely fits in 12 month clothing (of a variety of brands) and I’ve bought 18 month now which fits without much room to grow. She’s wearing many of her brothers hand me downs so I know she is much bigger than he was at the same age. (Some clothes she wears now fit DS when he was walking at 15 months). She is a full 6 cm longer than my best friend’s baby, who is 1 week younger and on the 75th centile.

DH and I are average though he does have tall family members. Is she likely to just have those tall genetics or might there be something wrong with her? Or is this just an early growth spurt that will even out after six months?

DD1 was 10.1 lb and off the charts for length when born. She was 8 days over due date. Couldn't fit into newborn clothes and had to go straight to next size. She's 15 now and 5'9" and size 10-12. DD2 was slightly smaller at birth and likely to end up about 5'7'.

I'm 5'4" but my mother and grandmother were tall and DP is 6'.

Son was 9lb...he's now a tall, very slim 9 year old with big feet. His sister is also tall but more filled out and she was born at 7lb 7...

bluechameleon · 09/04/2023 15:49

11lb DC1always been one of the tallest in their class and wearing clothes a size up. 9lb DC2 is on the smaller side of average for their age.

DS has always been 91-98 centile for height. He’s now two and taller than his cousin who is 15 months older than him.

Hes predicted to be 6ft 4, which isn’t surprising when his grandfathers are 6ft 4 and 6ft 6.

AbsoIutelyLovely · 09/04/2023 15:55

My son was 11lbs, he is 13
now, 6 foot and takes a size 12
shoe…..

Philandbill · 09/04/2023 15:56

Both my DD were off the charts as babies, I got very used to the rude comment "My God, she's huge!". By the time they went to school they were both very small, DD2 was always the smallest in her primary school class. As older teens both are slim and DD1 has stopped growing at 5 ft 6" and it looks as if DD2 will be about 5 ft 4". DH is 6ft and I am 5ft 9". Genetics can be very surprising 😁

caringcarer · 09/04/2023 15:58

My niece had a baby boy that was 11lb 5 Oz at birth and very long too. He continues to be on top of growth percentiles but she is 5 7 and DH is 6 4.

Poetnojo · 09/04/2023 16:04

Youngest ds was 10lb 14.5 oz born 2 days early, is age12.5 now, 5 ft 11, skinny as a rake and size 11 shoes. He's in 6th class in primary and literally the tallest person in his school and I include all the staff in that. His older brother was 8lb 14.5 oz born and is now 6 ft 2 as an adult. Dd was 8 lb 8 oz born and is 5 ft 5.5 as an adult.

FirstnameSuesecondnamePerb · 09/04/2023 16:19

Dd3 was 4 kg at birth, a third more than the other 2.
She was always a head taller than all her school friends right through school until she was 14 and seems to have rested at 5"8" at 15. For reference I'm 5'1" and dh 6'3"

FrozenGhost · 09/04/2023 16:22

I was born a giant baby (4.5kg) and unfortunately I've been overweight every day of my life. Sorry OP!

pukkapine · 09/04/2023 16:49

DS was 12lb 12oz 😬 and is now a 6' 3" 16 year old who's quite skinny but bulking out a bit at the gym to be quite muscular. I think he may have another couple of inches growing to do.

SittingOnTheChair · 09/04/2023 16:56

I don't think you can tell.

My best friends DS was 10lb 10oz, now just over 5'7" as a grown adult.

Mine was 6lb and is now 6'4"

BertieBotts · 09/04/2023 17:05

DS2 was an absolutely enormous baby, his thighs in particular were huge, you couldn't squeeze him into a Bumbo seat and we always had to use nappies that he wasn't yet in the weight range for. I have no idea where it came from, he was born a normal size, DH and I are normal sized, I am quite tall for a woman, but nothing crazy (170cm which is about 5'7") and always about 2-3 clothing sizes ahead of his real age. He is now 4.5 and fits perfectly into age 4-5, and reasonably into age 5-6 - skinny and elfin with long legs. He still wears pants which are 2 sizes above his actual clothes, though his legs/bum don't look big any more, and honestly the age 5-6 trousers fall down.

It doesn't really make sense, but that's how it is!

DS3 was more normal sized, but they kept saying that he was going to be huge, were even considering induction and this was because he has ridiculous long legs and looked like a baby gazelle. Even the midwife who delivered him commented on his legs because they looked completely out of proportion when he was newborn. He was 54cm. He is now 20mo and wears age 2-3 trousers (but 18-24 month for most things).

Singleandproud · 09/04/2023 17:05

DD was a very average 7lbs 14oz but never seemed to stop growing, size 12 with size 9 feet at 13 years and 5ft 10.

The negatives - regularly treated older than she was due to her height. Experienced sexual harassment from 10 as she looked like a teen.

Positives - Fantastic build for swimming and rugby. She has embraced her height and likes being taller than most others she comes across.

Top tip - buy boys clothes, they are cut substantially bigger than girls and are much wider. I often used to buy the long Jersey shorts from Sainsbury 'blue' section and would team it up with sparkly tops from the 'pink' one. The girls equivalent practically showed bum cheeks and when you are tall it's even worse.

BertieBotts · 09/04/2023 17:06

Both of them were about 3.4kg born, which is 7lb 8oz and exactly average apparently.

Gigantasaurus · 09/04/2023 17:07

Mine wasn't giant in terms of weight (7lbs) but was over the top of the centile chart length wise, ended up over 6 foot tall.

MYSTERIOUSGIRLONLINE · 09/04/2023 17:08

My daughter-in-law (well my son and his girlfriend are not married but I call her my daughter-in-law as she's so sweet!) and my son had a Xmas baby and he weighed in at 10lb 110z and everytime I look at my beautiful grandson I fall in love all over again!

CurlewKate · 09/04/2023 17:10

My DS was 10.6 at birth. He put on weighs steadily but slowly as a baby-the health visitor said that he was a classic case of "catch down" growth- he was, for whatever reason very big at birth and was, for want of a better word "adjusting". By the time he was 5, he was bigger and taller than average but not strikingly so. He's now 21, just over 6ft (like all the men on both sides of the family) and of average build. HTH

AlanJohnsonsBeemer · 09/04/2023 17:12

DD was 10lb 1 and is quite tall and slim aged 12, but nothing out of the ordinary. Size 6 feet about to be size 7 but not sure about height and weight, I guess she is about 5ft 2 or 3. I assume she will be tall as DS was only 8lb 4 and is 6ft2 despite DH and me being pretty average height wise.

BigTedLittleTedCardboardBox · 09/04/2023 17:14

My dd was always tall, and in 12-18m clothes at 5 months. She's now 12 and 5'10", and will likely be around 6' tall. I'm 5'10.5" and DH is 6'2".

Doyouthinktheyknow · 09/04/2023 17:14

Ds1 9lb 4 at term, now a super skinny 20 year old. Dropped centiles gradually over 18 months.

Ds2 was 10lb 7oz at term, he was chunky for a good few years but thinned out in his teens. Now an average 18 year old.

Mendholeai · 09/04/2023 17:17

I was told to expect a giant baby however it was liquid- the baby was 8lbs

BettySweaty · 09/04/2023 17:23

DS1 - 91st percentile. Now 6ft 1 age 17.
DS 2 - 97th percentile. 5ft 9 age 15. Hands like shovels. Going to get a lot bigger I think.

Both grown at completely different rates and ages

waitingwaitingwaiting2 · 09/04/2023 17:39

@Tiredmum100 yes, we were at the healt visitor clinic last week and DD was larger than all of the babies there for their 1 year review 😳

Daughter was 9lb 4. She is now 11 and tiny. Wears clothes for 7-8 year olds. A hospital consultant once told me birth weight is no predictor of future size.
