Does anyone else remember when reality tv shows were becoming popular? Things like Driving School. Remember Maureen? And Life of Grime with Mr Trebus? He had such a sad story.

There was one about the residents of a particular street but I can't remember what it was called now.

Can anyone remember any others?

Holiday Showdown is one of my favourite shows of all time, such a good concept.

OrchidOrchard · 07/04/2023 21:12

Loved Shipwrecked in T4. There was another ine, IT. Maybe, called something like Survivor. They were somewhere exotic and had to do extreme tasks. I can remember them having to stand on a pole in the sea. I think it was only on one season.

loved MYV’s real world, think it was the New York one where there was a girl from Birmingham, Alabama and she loved the handsome boy.

Wasnt someone famous on the holiday reps one? I’m thinking Joe Swash and he got the sack!!

Mr Trebus from life of grime was heartbreaking. OG Big Brother was the best with nasty Nick, Craig wanted to win it to help a young girl who needed an operation.

also remember an early series of celebrity love island with Liz McLarnon and Calum Best.

The first 'reality' type show I can remember was about the youngsters who worked on Haven caravan sites. I think it was called HavenMates or something like that.

LubaLuca · 07/04/2023 21:12

I think I watched everything mentioned on this thread.

Not sure if Sylvania Waters has been mentioned yet, it was set in a wealthy Australian suburb.

I remember an episode of The Salon when one of the clients had nits and they wouldn't cut her hair.

Goodread1 · 07/04/2023 21:14

Oh what about that tv series in which people families swap total different lives for a short while

In a extreme way, and hopefully learn or get something out of it,

Does anybody rember this,

The would often deliberately choose controversial lives swaps as they knew it would create more sparks be more interesting for views,

With all conflict/drama instigated

For e.g A vegan or vegetarian swapping with serious meat lovers who love eating Big mac quite often ect

Cudz · 07/04/2023 21:18

@IWasFunBeforeMum The Villa was amazing. I've often tried finding old episodes online but can't. I would love to re-watch the whole series.
I was also obsessed with Ibiza Uncovered.
Such nostalgia reading this thread!

I loved the Real World! I was teaching English overseas and had a whole set of lessons built around the first episode of San Francisco. It was great lots of “what would your first impression be? Who do you think you would be friends with?” type questions.

That series in particular was truly ground breaking for early/mid-90s with Pedro and the HIV portrayal. The early series were also great as they didn’t have people using it as a springboard to being a sleb - it really was them just living their lives.

I discovered they have the original Vegas series on Netflix this morning and have binged six episodes today; I had stopped watching by the time this one aired but am really enjoying it. It dates really badly in some places (a whole episode about their boss sexually harassing the girls in the house and lots of victim blaming going on) but it still is fascinating to watch.

Iwasjustasking · 07/04/2023 21:21

I had forgot all about real world and I was so obsessed with it! Also simple life and the hills! Also watched some random one on channel 4 called playing it straight where you had to guess if the men were gay or straight! I also loved americas next top model, the farm, newlyweds with Jessica Simpson, I was so obsessed with reality tv, I loved it all!

BelladonnaKebab · 07/04/2023 21:21

Are you thinking of wife swap? I was obsessed with that show! You can still watch it on you-tube!

There were two series of UK Survivor (the first one was marginally better). I loved both of them. I read the other day that they are bringing it back I hope so 😀.

That was to TerryIsAllGold!

Beantag · 07/04/2023 21:25

The golden age, not sure if it's because it was new so more novel, or whether social media wasn't about as such so you didn't have constant commentary and people didn't go on these shows in order to be influencers.

ExCarer · 07/04/2023 21:25

Have name changed but I’ve produced some of the shows mentioned. It’s nice to know they’re remembered!

That is too cool! I'm seriously impressed.

The other team on Shipwrecked was The Tigers. I always felt more Team Tigers than Sharks.
Me and my sister were obsessed with a show called Redcoats that followed (Obviously) Butlins redcoats in the early noughties. We watched it on Christmas day 😂one year. Still quote it to each other now.

Olaftree · 07/04/2023 21:26

The one where parents went on holiday to spy on their kids.

Airport was amazing. We’re there reps on there too or am I thinking of another program? Petition to bring airport back please!

ExCarer · 07/04/2023 21:26

Yes 1900 House was amazing and I loved The Tourist Trap.

Does anyone remember a programme where couples would have to travel as far as they could with little money then on the Sunday they would phone the show from a phone box and people would encouraged to call and say where they might be. They had to get to the end of the show without being caught to carry on. I think it was called Wanted

MischiefTheChicken · 07/04/2023 21:30

I loved the 1900s house! I tried some of the subsequent ones but I didn’t feel as involved as I did with that series. DD and I also really liked Turn Back Time: The High Street (which I’ve just checked and found it was 2010 but feels more recent) which was also made by the same company

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 07/04/2023 21:30

Model Behaviour on Channel 4

MischiefTheChicken · 07/04/2023 21:31

That was replying to @ChessieFL but the quote disappeared

Iwasjustasking · 07/04/2023 21:36

Oh I also used to love a programme that used to come on t4 about la guardia (may be spelt wrong) dance school, no one remembers it and I Absolutley loved it!
