'90s and early 2000s reality tv shows

Does anyone else remember when reality tv shows were becoming popular? Things like Driving School. Remember Maureen? And Life of Grime with Mr Trebus? He had such a sad story.

There was one about the residents of a particular street but I can't remember what it was called now.

Can anyone remember any others?

Was it Paddington Square which was narrated by Ross Kemp?

I also used to like Airport. I’ll never forget the woman who got on the wrong flight and ended up in Moscow 😂 Also The Cruise which launched Jane McDonald’s career and Airline.

OMG. Thank you! I'll have to watch it for the nostalgia.

The Osbornes had me in a chokehold!!! I was obsessed. I think they were the first reality show that followed a family and spawned everything else ever.

ExCarer · 07/04/2023 19:35

Paddington Square. That was it. Thank you!

I loved Airport. I don't know how the staff put up with that crap day after day though. Not that it's much fun for the passengers either.

I was always really messy(still am lol) but my bedroom was pigsty and my family always said I’d end up like Mr Trebus 🙄

HamHand · 07/04/2023 19:38

My flatmate and I loved a hairdressing one. I think it was called the Salon? We worked split shifts at a hotel and always pushed it to the last minute watching this before we left for the evening shift. It would probably be very quaint now, but reality tv really was in its infancy.

shakeitoffsis · 07/04/2023 19:38

Airport was so good! With Jeremy!

I remember on Trouble (remember that channel 🤣) called cruel summer and cruel winter - brits in a castle type building in Scotland and had to do tasks/ compete. None of my friends remember it!

Parroteets · 07/04/2023 19:39

The Family. I think it's was on channel 4.

YukoandHiro · 07/04/2023 19:39

@HamHand OMG my uni flatmate and I were obsessed with The Salon. It was brilliant. Sort of an early structured reality as the set up

NillyNoMates · 07/04/2023 19:40

Does anyone else remember Shattered where the contestants had to stay awake?

I was thinking about this just today.

And Shipwrecked, on at a weekend.

Katrina from the airport's kids went to same primary as my kids. She is an absolutely lovely lady, really genuine and always so cheerful despite (well publicised, I'm not sharing anything unknown) serious health problems.

LunaNorth · 07/04/2023 19:42

I used to love Would Like To Meet, where they had a bunch of dating experts sat outside restaurants in a van, feeding advice to a no-hoper through an earpiece.

JustCheck · 07/04/2023 19:42

Shipwrecked was brilliant!!!!

Enfys1982 · 07/04/2023 19:42

I loved The Salon! Who remembers Castaway 2000 with Ben Fogle and others living self sufficiently on a remote island? There this guy called Ron I think who wound everyone up, had a fight with someone then left on a boat and sold his story to the News of the World.

Hobbes8 · 07/04/2023 19:43

I was reminiscing the other day about the utter Z list “celebrity” ones - Jodie Marsh trying to marry a random, Kerry Katona and her terrible husband, Lisa Scott Lee and her brothers who were also in a band (one of whom was married to one of Liberty X). I’d feel horribly voyeuristic now but I loved them at the time.

JustCheck · 07/04/2023 19:43

What a time to be alive

IWasFunBeforeMum · 07/04/2023 19:44

The Villa on sky one!

Tribollite · 07/04/2023 19:44

I just watched MTV's Real World, there is a couple of seasons on Netflix. The season in around 2000 seems so old-fashioned, even though in my head 2000 was yesterday (as I'm 53).

I just asked DH if he remembers Shattered and he said " what was that programme with Ben Fogle on Taransay with the weird aggressive bloke who pissed everybody off."

And the one with the mad island woman who called her island Janeique iirc. That ended up bonkers and a half.

Oh wow, is there? I’m going to watch that now. I thought of the Real World straight away when I saw the thread title.

I loved Cruel Summer! But like you, none of my friends remember it.

There was a series in the late 80s that showed inside someone's house and they talked about their style and their favourite things. Called Signs of the Times. It was wonderful

LunaNorth · 07/04/2023 19:59

I loved The 1900 House.
