'90s and early 2000s reality tv shows

Does anyone else remember when reality tv shows were becoming popular? Things like Driving School. Remember Maureen? And Life of Grime with Mr Trebus? He had such a sad story.

There was one about the residents of a particular street but I can't remember what it was called now.

Can anyone remember any others?

I'm assuming it's the production company not giving rights? Maybe it stops them flogging it around the world?

Wow this thread is bring back so many memories!

Does anybody remember that episode of Bad Lads Army (young offenders are shipped off to a 50s style army barracks) where one of the recruits was a complete lazy fool and kept just giving up and lying down in the middle of a hike, so all his team had to carry him. His team kept getting collective punishment for him being so useless but he didn't give a shit. I think it ended in violence because his squad were being punished every day for his behaviour.

Also the episode of Would Like To Meet where a very trainspotterish man had never had a date. The advisors came to his house and discovered lots of weird stuff, including his childhood pet mouse who had been stuffed. The experts told him to get rid of the mouse because it was creepy and weird, but then the man ended up on a date with a woman who'd had her dog taxidermied. I really hope they worked out!

I also loved 60 minute makeover - a whole house being redecorated in 1 hour. They managed to do so much.

(Why is this stuff taking up space in my brain?!)

On the subject of dating shows I used to like Streetmate with Davina, although it was pretty brutal, dragging someone round a town asking randoms if they'd agree to a date with them 😬

goodkidsmaadhouse · 08/04/2023 17:26

Yes Streetmate! So brutal!

Vet School and then Vets in Practice. Loved Trude, Emma and Joe

CherryCokeFanatic · 08/04/2023 17:58

Haven’t RTFT but anyone remember That’ll Teach Em on C4 where they sent teens to a 1950s style school? That was pretty fun, I had just started secondary myself then

Always worried that Emma and Joe had got pressured into marrying?!?!

There was a good one about trainee doctors. Was it Doctors to Be? And then was an impressive older woman who had several kids iirc.

Probably true, they got divorced didn’t they. And yes Doctors to Be although I can’t remember people on that clearly like I can with Vet School/Vets in Practice. Can’t remember her name but there was also the one who wanted to be an equine vet and succeeded in working for one of the best equine practices.

Faking it was really good. After reading this, I searched on YouTube and found Nigel a curate from Suffolk working as a second-hand car salesman for a month. Brilliant

Seem to remember one episode where a young woman was being made all girly. When she saw herself in the mirror, her only comment was 'prostitute Barbie'.

Tormundsbeard · 08/04/2023 19:39

Anyone remember Tool Academy?

Oh what about that tv series in which people families swap total different lives for a short while

In a extreme way, and hopefully learn or get something out of it,

Does anybody rember this,

The would often deliberately choose controversial lives swaps as they knew it would create more sparks be more interesting for views,

With all conflict/drama instigated

For e.g A vegan or vegetarian swapping with serious meat lovers who love eating Big mac quite often ect

Wifeswap

tobee · 08/04/2023 20:06

I love the fact some were quite highfalutin like Maestro where Sue Perkins and Goldie learnt to conduct an orchestra. And the Tool Academy etc! They all sound good to me!

CherryCokeFanatic · 08/04/2023 20:23

Rock School where Gene Simmons went to a British school and trained up some kids to be a rock band. Used to love Lil Chris (RIP)

I remember the poor girl who was a classical opera (I think!) Singer who had to pass for a rock/punk singer. She looked so awkward. I remember Karen O from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs being one of the people drafted in to help (was reminded of this the other day when I saw her in Meet me in the bathroom).
