What time do your 7/8 year olds go to bed and how many hours sleep?

Dd is 7, nearly 8 and goes to sleep about 9 - 9.15 and wakes around 7.30am on school days (my other child is up at 5am but dd sleeps through him being up 😂). Sometimes at the weekend she’ll sleep longer. She’s not a morning person.

so that’s around 10 hours. How do your 7/8 year olds sleep?

we bumped into a parent of a friend of dd who’s similar age. When I told her dd didn’t go asleep until 9 she tutted and turned her nose up and said her LO goes to sleep at 6.30pm at 8 years old and was shocked dd stays up to late.

both my kids have Sen an out routine is very strict and works well for us, even if it’s not particularly early sleep time.

to add, dd goes upstairs to her bedroom about 7-7.30pm, she often chills in her room for an hour or so before sleep!

just interested to know the norm!

7 year old dd goes to bed at 8 and wakes up around 7am. She's always needed quite a lot of sleep (napped until she started school!) so would struggle with a regular bedtime much later than that, although obviously if we're doing something special like a meal out or a theatre trip or whatever then she copes with a later bed time. If your routine works for you then it's perfect - never understand why people get judgy over stuff like this that doesn't affect them in any way at all!

Pinkflipflop85 · 06/04/2023 21:32

Ds is 8. Falls asleep some time between 9 and 10 usually. Has to get up for school at 7am.
Any time I've raised concerns about his sleep with medical professionals they aren't fussed and tell me he's getting enough sleep.

Pinkflipflop85 · 06/04/2023 21:33

Most days we don't even get home until 6, so a 6.30 bedtime would be pretty ridiculous.

Mines just turned 9 now but she went to bed at 7:30 and could read till 8 at that age.

ShatParp · 06/04/2023 21:36

My 7 year old also falls asleep around 9ish and I wake her up at 8 for school, she is a very deep sleeper so I figure she gets enough. Of course on the weekends and holidays she is up at the arse crack of dawn...

WeeM · 06/04/2023 21:36

Mine was lights out at 8 at that age but realistically it often got stretched to 8.30. Up at 7.40.

Blueey · 06/04/2023 21:36

DS is nearly 8. After a lot of fuss with bedtimes we have a routine where he comes up about 8pm, gets ready etc and is usually asleep by 9pm. This feels a bit late to me, but bedtimes are much better now. He usually gets up about 6.30am, very rarely later, so he's obviously getting enough sleep. So I've decided it's what works for each child that's best. His brother is younger and goes up at 7.15pm, sleeps in later, around 7am.

Pammela · 06/04/2023 21:36

My, just, 7yo goes to bed about 7.30 but can read for half an hour. She’s up about 630/7am.

Wiaa · 06/04/2023 21:39

Ds is almost 7, since he was around 3 he has slept 10ish hours a night he usually falls asleep around 830 and is up around 630 my other ds is almost 4 and probably sleeps an hour longer. I think between ten and twelve hours a night is pretty 'normal'

lsanny · 06/04/2023 21:41

When I told her dd didn’t go asleep until 9 she tutted and turned her nose up and said her LO goes to sleep at 6.30pm at 8 years old and was shocked dd stays up to late.

She is a twat.

I have 2 with autism and neither slept before midnight at that age.

Don't compare your family to others, we all do what works for our kids. People that think they are better then you because their kid goes to sleep earlier have real chips on their shoulder.

Eatentoomanyroses · 06/04/2023 21:44

At that age we were on 7:30 bedtimes.

adularia · 06/04/2023 21:46

Falls asleep by 7.30pm (reads from 7pm) and wakes around 6-6.30am.

WhatHaveIDone21 · 06/04/2023 21:48

My almost 8 year old gets into bed at 8pm and lights out at 8.15pm on school days. She wakes up around 6.45/7am. At the weekend and in holidays it's later - around 9.15ish. Sometimes she sleeps later and other times she gets up at her normal time.

nobrasfot · 06/04/2023 22:04

My just turned 8 year old usually goes to sleep about 9 and falls straight to sleep, up at 7. tried earlier bedtimes but it doesn't seem to happen. doesn't help that some nights he doesn't get back from activities till 730 8 clock, he then needs time to wind down.

SoFED · 06/04/2023 22:09

830 up c.7am

sakura06 · 06/04/2023 22:17

DD is nearly 8. Aim for getting ready for bed at 8, but realistically not in bed often before 8:40 and falls asleep around 9. Wakes around 7:30.

usernotfound0000 · 06/04/2023 22:36

DD just turned 8 is usually asleep by 8pm. Wake up time is between 6&7 but usually closer to 6. She's an early riser like DH, always has been and still wakes up early even if she has a later night.

Frosty1000 · 06/04/2023 22:39

My nearly 8 year old is upstairs for 7.30 for shower and reading, lights out at 8.30 and asleep within 10-15 mins. Up between 7 & 7.30.

Zola1 · 06/04/2023 22:40

630 is ridiculous
On a school night he gets in the bath about 715, and is in bed with the light off by 8. What time he goes to sleep is down to the position of the stars, whether there's fluff on his toes, and if he suddenly has a near death thirst.

Zola1 · 06/04/2023 22:41

Usually wake him around 7 on a school day, on a weekend he is sometimes up til 9 as he might watch a film or be busy with a board game with 12yo etc. On a weekend he sleeps til about 8 unless the little ones go and wake him.

Marchforward · 06/04/2023 22:41

Nearly 7 year old goes to sleep between 7 and 8 and wakes up between 6.30 to 7.30. She does have a hearing impairment and has to work harder than others to hear what is happening.

HarryBlaster · 06/04/2023 22:42

I aim for 7-7:30 to be asleep by 8. She’s a good sleeper and still needs 11-12 hours.

daffodilandtulip · 06/04/2023 22:47

At that age our bedtimes were 7:30/8. But everyone is different with how much sleep they need. DD17 still goes to bed at 9:30 for ten hours sleep, whereas DS14 scrapes about midnight to 6:30.

SnowyGiveAway · 06/04/2023 22:48

Just turned 7 - normally asleep by 8/ 8.15. Wakes between 7/ 7.30

Now that it's light out and no school he's been sleeping from around 9- 8/8.30, so I'd say 11ish hours is his norm. He's out as much as can be though and pretty active, so I think he needs it.

We're lucky now, but he didn't sleep through the night until he was 2.5, and he didn't stay in bed past 6 until he was close to 4.

Bauhausstolemyhair · 06/04/2023 22:50

I try for 8:30 but its more like 9 going on midnight. Has asc and I still have to do lots of cuddling and patting otherwise they're up ALL night.
Its just annoying af, but what can I do when the poor thing thinks the world's gonna end if they fall asleep.
