What time do your 7/8 year olds go to bed and how many hours sleep?

Dd is 7, nearly 8 and goes to sleep about 9 - 9.15 and wakes around 7.30am on school days (my other child is up at 5am but dd sleeps through him being up 😂). Sometimes at the weekend she’ll sleep longer. She’s not a morning person.

so that’s around 10 hours. How do your 7/8 year olds sleep?

we bumped into a parent of a friend of dd who’s similar age. When I told her dd didn’t go asleep until 9 she tutted and turned her nose up and said her LO goes to sleep at 6.30pm at 8 years old and was shocked dd stays up to late.

both my kids have Sen an out routine is very strict and works well for us, even if it’s not particularly early sleep time.

to add, dd goes upstairs to her bedroom about 7-7.30pm, she often chills in her room for an hour or so before sleep!

just interested to know the norm!

Mine goes to sleep at 8 and up at 7.

My DD has only recently turned 7. We get her upstairs at around 7.15 and then stories etc and lights out by 7.45/8 latest. She's awake by 7.30am very latest. She definitely needs her sleep.

switswoo81 · 06/04/2023 22:54

6:30! Shes still in her gymnastics class at that time some evenings.
Just turned 8 bed at 8 on school night have to pull her out of bed at 7:30 am.
Now that it's school holidays she stays up till 9 and slept till 10:30 this morning. She always loved her sleep though since she was a newborn.

7yr old 8-8.30, up 7ish.

Almost 8 yo goes up usually around 9/9.15 and is up at 7. I don't think this is quite enough sleep for them so at least once a week we'll insist bedtime is 8. They are autistic and have ADHD so bedtimes are a a bit of a battle tbh. Last summer DH heard the neighbour call "Right girls, get your teeth brushed and into bed. See you in the morning." We were both agog at how easy it must be for other families.

630 is ridiculous
On a school night he gets in the bath about 715, and is in bed with the light off by 8. What time he goes to sleep is down to the position of the stars, whether there's fluff on his toes, and if he suddenly has a near death thirst.

😂😂 so true. My three year old is the exact same.

Caterina99 · 06/04/2023 23:48

DS is nearly 8. School nights we do bedtime around 8/8.30 and he’s normally asleep by 9ish. Gets up usually about 7/7.30. Occasionally I have to wake him up at 8 for school, although that’s pretty rare. Weekends and holidays he can stay up a bit.

We moved bedtime back because a 7pm bedtime was meaning him waking up ridiculously early (for us), pre 6am. It was disturbing younger DD and us too, so we’re happier with the later bedtime even if I miss my peaceful evenings.

Coffeeandcrocs · 06/04/2023 23:51

8.5 year old DD is asleep by 8pm and I have to wake her at 7.45 on school days - will sleep in til 8.30am on weekends

Shes always had high sleep needs, napped until 4.5!

Avarua2 · 06/04/2023 23:52

7.30 bedtime and can read a chapter of his book so is usually asleep around 8/8.15. Is woken at 7am for school.

LSSG · 07/04/2023 19:40

6.30 Hmm That surely can't be true.

Dd goes between 7.30 and 8 depending on tiredness. She is an early riser though, always has been, rare she's any later than 6 but she stays in her room til 6 if she wakes earlier.

Wouldn't mind her going to bed later in the holidays if she wanted to, but she hasn't really asked, and the earlyish bedtime suits us as we have a little one too.

Happy for her to go later if/when she wants though.

vickylou78 · 08/04/2023 21:34

My 8 year old is in bed between 7.30 and 8pm. Wakes up 7am.

MidnightEagle · 08/04/2023 21:34

My 7 and 9 year olds go to sleep about 10/10.30 and up at 7.30/8. They have never been big sleepers. I have always needed a lot of sleep and even now I neee more than them 🤣

88Pandora88 · 08/04/2023 21:34

630?!! Jeez!
My 3 year old goes to bed 7/730 most nights, my 8 year old has story about 8, so usually in bed for 830, both usually up at 7am ish

Luckyduc · 08/04/2023 21:44

I work in reception and this is a common question we ask children once a year. Most go to bed at 8pm.
6.30pm is my opinion is too early.

My child is 8 and he got to he'd at 8pm but he often reads until 10pm in bed and gets up 7.30am. At this age children need around 10 hours sleep.

Rainbow1216 · 08/04/2023 21:47

There literally is no norm!! If it works for yourself and your kids then that's all that matters!
My 7 nearly 8 year old goes up about 8.30 / 9........sometimes still awake at 10 30 and sometimes fast asleep by 8.45. His body knows what it needs.
He is always up early tho 😫

shadowchancesassy · 08/04/2023 21:49

DD's 6 and 8 both go to bed between 8:15-8:30. Asleep by 8:45-9pm, both up at 7am.

Saschka · 08/04/2023 21:55

How does an 8 year old do any clubs (Brownies, swimming etc) if they are in bed by 18:30? Like a PP, we are usually only just getting home by then.

DS is 6, and sleeps 8pm-8am (school starts at 9am and we live close by - can leave the house at 8:45am and still be on time). I don’t think he went to bed at 18:30 even as a toddler! 9pm for an 8 year old sounds fine, as long you aren’t having to drag her out of bed in the morning.

DrunkenKoala · 08/04/2023 21:57

DD is 8 (Jan birthday). On a school night she goes to bed about 7.30 but doesn’t generally fall asleep until 8.30 - 9, we have let her stay up until 8.30 but she’s a mess - she needs that hour to wind down. She up between 6.30 and 7am. Weekends usually a bit later (9 on a Saturday and 8 - 8.30 on a Sunday).

MyEasterEggs · 08/04/2023 21:57

6.30pm 😆 crikey we’re just finishing our dinner then! My LO has never fallen asleep before 8pm and now she’s almost 9 it’s closer to 9pm. She sleeps 10 hours. If I tried to get her down earlier it would be chaos and I don’t need the drama. You do you and ignore your snooty friend.

BrassTrim · 08/04/2023 22:01

Dd 8 falls asleep any time really between 8.30 and 9.30. Wakes any time from 6 but mostly around 7.15

UndercoverCop · 08/04/2023 22:05

I take it her child doesn't do any extra curricular activities then? There's no way you can do that, homework, dinner, bath, bed by six thirty.

YuGiOh · 08/04/2023 22:07

Ds is now 9 and goes to bed at 8pm. Usually asleep within half an hour or less
At age 7/8 bedtime was 7:30pm.
He is generally up anywhere between 6-7am. Has always been a fairly early riser.

BotherThat · 08/04/2023 22:13

My 7 year old goes upstairs at 7.30pm. She reads a chapter of her book, lights out at 8pm, asleep not long after. She wakes naturally at 6am.

celticprincess · 08/04/2023 22:15

You’ve got to do what works for you. My autistic 13 year old thinks I’m mean as she’s to be in bed for 8:30 except one night when she’s at guides which finishes at 8:30 so straight to bed when she gets in. She struggles to get up at 7am when her alarm goes off and I wake her. She keeps asking for 9pm but whenever we have tried this for a full week it’s resulted in meltdowns. Her 10 year old sister however goes to bed at the same time and is usually up and awake before 7pm. Even on a weekend when it’s 9pm she’s still up before 7. Some kids need less sleep. She also asks to stay up and sometimes I do let her and it doesn’t seem to make a difference to her wake time. She does suddenly get really tired by 10pm though if we ever stay up/out late.

what I do know is both the 10 and 13 year old get messages on their phones right up until midnight some nights. Their phones charge downstairs so I see the notifications. Less so now as I think their friends have realised they don’t answer after 8:30pm.

I work with autistic kids and their sleep patterns vary. Some barely sleep at all. Some go to bed at 7pm but are then up at 2am for the day. Some fall asleep in school. Some are on melatonin to help with sleep and others aren’t medicated at all.

CaptainWarbeck · 08/04/2023 22:22

My 7 nearly 8 year old is an early bird so 6.30pm could be possible for him if he'd had a massive day - but definitely not the norm. He usually reads until 7pm or a bit after then he's tucked up and asleep by 7.30.

He's then up at 5am reading chapters of his latest book in bed while waiting for us to all get up at 6am.

I do think there's a night owl/lark element - he would be asleep on his feet at 9pm and even when he stays up late he still usually wakes early.

Love a deathly thirst Grin
