What time do your 7/8 year olds go to bed and how many hours sleep?

Dd is 7, nearly 8 and goes to sleep about 9 - 9.15 and wakes around 7.30am on school days (my other child is up at 5am but dd sleeps through him being up 😂). Sometimes at the weekend she’ll sleep longer. She’s not a morning person.

so that’s around 10 hours. How do your 7/8 year olds sleep?

we bumped into a parent of a friend of dd who’s similar age. When I told her dd didn’t go asleep until 9 she tutted and turned her nose up and said her LO goes to sleep at 6.30pm at 8 years old and was shocked dd stays up to late.

both my kids have Sen an out routine is very strict and works well for us, even if it’s not particularly early sleep time.

to add, dd goes upstairs to her bedroom about 7-7.30pm, she often chills in her room for an hour or so before sleep!

just interested to know the norm!

I think inasmuch as there is a norm, its within a fairly big range. Some parents are also rather economical with the truth when it comes to kids sleep.

FWIW, my daughter always had sleep needs towards the lower end, dropped naps earlier than the books say to etc. She's now 6 so slightly younger but she goes to bed around 8 or 8:30 and gets up at 7. Swimming night ends up being a little later as she's in the pool till 7:45 then needs to get changed, home, hair washed and dried.

In the holidays we let her stay up later but she also sleeps in accordingly.

PurpleTulipsAndHomemadeBread · 08/04/2023 22:27

8pm for my 8yo, up at 6am on school days though and she takes about 30 mins to actually go to sleep 9.5 hours sleep roughly. She also sometimes naps after school if she's had a very busy day.

Lovelyring · 08/04/2023 22:27

I have come to the conclusion that it doesn't matter as long as your child is sleeping enough!

I need 9 hrs sleep to feel great. DH needs 7.5. Ideally I go to sleep around 11pm and up at 8am. My friend thrives by going to bed at 9.30pm and is up at 5.30am.

Imo children are the same. Wide variety.

My 7 year old is sometimes still eating tea at 6.30pm 😆 she goes to bed around 9pm and wakes just before 8.

WimbyAce · 08/04/2023 22:41

Mine is up to bed around 7ish and we do reading and stories. Then she has some tablet time. Lights out at 830. Sleeps til I wake her for school so 7ish or will be about 8ish if no school.

ArrrMeHearties · 08/04/2023 22:41

Almost 8yo ds goes to bed about 730 if he's really tired from school and 8ish when he's not as tired. He has adhd and struggles to switch off so can still be awake about 10pm some nights but he is getting better at settling now

Minierme · 08/04/2023 22:44

Story about 7.30, bed (&soon asleep) about 8pm and then up about 6.30am (but entertains themselves quite happily until everyone else is up around 7/7.15ish)

Awumminnscotland · 08/04/2023 22:46

7 yr old in by 7 ish, asleep no later than 15 mins later. Up most regularly at 0620. Later bed time yields same or earlier rising time. If behaviour deteriorates, bed 30 mins earlier usually helps and results in later rise time.

Cece92 · 08/04/2023 22:55

My DD9 (nearly 10) is in bed by 9pm asleep for school and up at 7.15am but we leave for school at 7.45. Weekends it's 10 and she rises between 9/10. Holidays are the same. She's always needed a lot of sleep, was a super sleepy baby and is now heading towards the teenage sleeping pattern. X

Mumto32022 · 08/04/2023 23:13

7 and 9 year old bed at 8 on school days up for 7.30am.
weekends/ holidays bed for 9pm up whenever they please. Daughter likes a lie in until 9. Son is up at the crack of dawn playing or reading.

CoodleMoodle · 08/04/2023 23:21

DD has just turned 9 but for the past 3 or so years she's been having a couple of chapters downstairs with one of us from 7:30pm (her little brother goes up with the other parent at that time), until about 8. Then she goes upstairs and gets ready for bed, brushes her teeth, and into bed just after 8pm. She's allowed to read until 8:30, lights off at 8:45 latest.

Both DC wake up between 7-7:30 every day, no matter what!

kezzielea · 08/04/2023 23:21

7 year old goes to bed at 7pm. He usually gets up between 6-7am. We have to leave for school by 8.15 or 7.15 when he has a morning club.

annlee3817 · 08/04/2023 23:38

Bed at 8, asleep by 8.15 usually, will be eight in June. She wakes begrudgingly at 7am, would happily sleep for longer

stayathomer · 08/04/2023 23:41

I have two friends whose children are 8 and go to bed at 7.30. My son is 8 and has gone to bed at 8 the last few years and he wakes after 7. Holidays it’s more the 9 mark even though he still wakes at 7

DelurkingAJ · 08/04/2023 23:44

DSs are 7 and 10 and both go to bed at 8. DS1 is asleep by 8:15 and then awake about 5:45…DS2 chats, sings, wriggles and is generally a pain until about 9:30 and then has to be woken on school mornings at 7:30 (at weekends he is miraculously downstairs watching cartoons at 7 (they’re allowed down at 7)). So utterly depends on the child. I’m dreading DS1 starting Scouts next term as it finishes at 9 and he’s going to be almost unbearable…DS2 would cope better!

NoTouch · 08/04/2023 23:47

We could always tell in the mornings if ds was not getting with sleep. At that age they should be bouncing out of bed in the morning. If they are "not a morning person" at that age they need an earlier bedtime.

I’m glad you’ve said this as recently my five year old has not been going to sleep until after 8 at the earliest the last few months, no matter how much I try to get her in bed early, she’s just wired. It’s like she needs less sleep now but all my friends seem to get their kids to sleep earlier.

She shares a room with her little sister who drops off as soon as we start reading a story pretty much at about 7-7.30 but our 5 year old just chats and chats or sits up reading to herself. Since the Easter holidays she’s been awake til nearly 9 a lot! She still wakes up the same time (7ish) bright as a button and happy. She just won’t go to sleep any earlier!

Powerof321 · 09/04/2023 00:35

At 8 bedtime is 8 (occasionally a bit later if clubs or anything are on later) sleep until 7ish usually. As it’s the holidays bed time has been nearer 9 if we’ve been out but they’ve been sleeping til 8.30/9 so later bedtime works ok. My oldest was 7.30 at 8 but harder to juggle and be as “strict” with it when there is 3 of them. Mine will go to bed earlier if tired even my 12 year old goes up at 9 some nights

bluechameleon · 09/04/2023 03:02

For my 8 yo I finish stories with him at 8.30, but if he wants to keep his light on for a bit and look at comics he can. He usually chooses to turn it off at 8.30 though. He's up at about 6.30am.

Forgooodnesssakenow · 09/04/2023 05:41

My 5 yr old doesn't go down until after 9, he's always had low sleep needs and has a seizure disorder which effects it, he was on an 8.30 bedtime until his last prolonged seizure in October and we've been battling to get him regularly down before 10 since then. My youngest is almost 2 and at her age if he napped more than an hour he'd be up until midnight. On the other hand she can't survive beyond 8pm without getting teary and crying, takes herself to the stairs for bedtime at 7.45 most night shouting for me to take her to bed and had a danger nap at 4pm yesterday and was still asleep by 8.30. they're all different. If I'm still getting a 9pm bedtime out of my son in 2 yre sill be delighted.

daffodilandtulip · 06/04/2023 22:47

At that age our bedtimes were 7:30/8. But everyone is different with how much sleep they need. DD17 still goes to bed at 9:30 for ten hours sleep, whereas DS14 scrapes about midnight to 6:30.

This my 16yo Dd is regularly asleep by 8:30 and will put herself to bed at 7:30 if tired. She is up by 6:30 for school and around 9am at the weekend. DS is 19 rarely asleep before midnight and up by 9. At 8 Dd had a 7:30- 7:45 schedule DS more like 9-6:30.

Exactly the same as this. Exactly. 6.30pm is hella early for that age I would have thought. Cubs doesn't even finish until 8pm - how would you do any extra curriculars? Also I have an 11 year old so I think whether the child is the oldest or youngest can influence bedtimes.

Just do you. It works for your kids and family.

Imisssleep2 · 09/04/2023 06:22

Although reading this i thought 9 seemed late, they do say 10hrs is right for an 8 year old so if she is able to sleep till 7 then she is getting enough. I think half 6 is way too early for that age too though. If it works for you, and your child isnt falling asleep at school dont worry what others think, all kids are different and we do what works for us each individually.

MumOfBoys6711 · 09/04/2023 07:14

My 6 and 7 year old both go to bed at 7:30 on a school night but at the weekend are allowed to stay awake (in bed) until 9pm. Regardless of what time they go to sleep the 7 year old is always awake at 6am!

You do what works for you 😊
