What time do your 7/8 year olds go to bed and how many hours sleep?

Dd is 7, nearly 8 and goes to sleep about 9 - 9.15 and wakes around 7.30am on school days (my other child is up at 5am but dd sleeps through him being up 😂). Sometimes at the weekend she’ll sleep longer. She’s not a morning person.

so that’s around 10 hours. How do your 7/8 year olds sleep?

we bumped into a parent of a friend of dd who’s similar age. When I told her dd didn’t go asleep until 9 she tutted and turned her nose up and said her LO goes to sleep at 6.30pm at 8 years old and was shocked dd stays up to late.

both my kids have Sen an out routine is very strict and works well for us, even if it’s not particularly early sleep time.

to add, dd goes upstairs to her bedroom about 7-7.30pm, she often chills in her room for an hour or so before sleep!

just interested to know the norm!

Aged 4 the super- sleeper Dd would be flat out between 6 &7pm woken at 7:30-7:45 for school. The durracel bunny DS asleep 8-8:15 up at 6-6:30.

Our 7 year old plays quietly between 7-8pm. Lights out at 8 but faffs until about 8.30-9. Wakes 7-7.30.

Our 8 y/o is usually in bed by 7:30 and then reads until around 8, when it's lights off and sleep time. In theory anyway! We have to get up at 6am to catch the school bus for 7:10 - don't live in the UK and because of the mental traffic here the schools start a lot earlier.

9/915 seems a bit late but 630 is ridiculously early! I think 8/830 is on a school night is about right but every family is different. If it works for you and she's not over tired the next then do what works for you xx

Karenaki · 10/04/2023 18:07

I have 8yo twins. Lights out for both at 8.30 (start getting into pjs and story at 8).
Girl goes straight to sleep. Boy will have his bedside light on and play with his toys for a while. Will come get me to tuck him in when he’s ready to go to sleep, can be as late as 9.30. He’s then awake around 6 (so maybe 9hrs sleep) comes into me, she’ll sleep til 7 (10.5hrs).
everyone is different!

My 7 almost 8 year old goes to bed around half 7, unless it's a Beavers night. He's normally asleep by half 8 at the latest.

Lozois99 · 10/04/2023 18:47

Mine have never needed as much sleep as most. My ds7 is asleep by 10.30 and wakes up at 8. His sister was exactly the same.

itssquidstella · 10/04/2023 18:50

When I was 7 or 8 I was in bed for 7.30pm, lights out at 8 and up at 6.45. However, many nights I'd read from midnight until 4am because I had awful nightmares and was too scared to sleep until dawn. So probably not enough sleep 🤷‍♀️

Frazzledstar1 · 10/04/2023 18:54

7yo goes to bed at 8pm although can take a long time to fall asleep, probably somewhere between 8:30/9pm. She does tend to need to be woken for school though, she likes her sleep. I’ve tried an earlier bed time and she doesn’t fall asleep any earlier and ends up getting frustrated and disturbing her sibling.

NCforsillyQ · 10/04/2023 18:57

8yo goes to bed at 9pm and up at 7am (school days). Any earlier and its pointless putting her upstairs. Half the time she's still up faffing about until I make sure she is in bed / lights are out.

School holidays and weekends I try to stick to 'bedroom from 9pm' but am not as strict about her actually being in bed. She'll get roughly 10 hours from when she falls asleep.

Wish I had a child that went to bed at 6.30pm. None of mine ever have!!

Oigetoffmylawn · 10/04/2023 19:09

My 7yo wakes at 5.30am, rain or shine, holidays, weekends and school days, regardless of bed time or the days activities. He's as reliable as an alarm clock. Therefore he goes to bed at 7pm. If he goes later he's a total grotbag the following day and cannot regulate his emotions or control his behaviour.

My younger DC is totally the opposite and is able to self regulate, so sleeps in if they go to bed late, goes to bed happily early when tired, catches up on sleep when needed. So a set bedtime isn't needed as much. Annoys the older one a bit!

inappropriateraspberry · 10/04/2023 19:12

Just turned 8. She goes to bed between 8:30/9pm. She struggles to get up for school, but can't get to sleep any earlier unless ill. I wish she would go a bit earlier, but she just ends up awake in bed getting annoyed.

eatdrinkandbemerry · 10/04/2023 19:15

My kids have autism so still stick to the same time even though they are old.
Son goes at 8 and sleeps until 7 (may wake in night but stays quietly in bed).
Daughter goes at 8 and reads books before falling asleep at about 10 (she won't go to bed later) but she's always up before 5 😩

LuisaMei · 10/04/2023 19:15

DS is 8 in July - he goes up to read at 7.15 and is allowed to read up to 8.30 although he often gets tired and switches off his light before that. Wales about 6.30-7.

NicolaC17 · 10/04/2023 19:25

My 3 & 5 year old go to bed at 8:30, usually asleep by 8:45 and up between 6:15 and 6:45. Consistent with their sleep pattern and would happily stay up if we let them. They obviously know what sleep they need. Friends can’t believe they manage on so little sleep but they are happy, energetic bundles each day so I’m not worried.

Topsyturveymam · 10/04/2023 20:14

My 8 year old goes to bed around 8.15, we have a story for 15 mins til 8.30then sleep. He usually wakes up about 6.30am. Thinking of giving him a later bedtime.

Dizzyfloss · 10/04/2023 20:57

My almost 8 year old goes to bed (lights out) 7pm on school nights, 7.30pm weekends/school holidays. He wakes at 6.30/6.45am. I have a 6 year old daughter as well who needs her sleep so I sometimes let my 8 year old read if not tired. But generally he's asleep fairly quickly! It's just what works for us, and it means as parents we get a bit of kid-free evening!

Chuck2015 · 10/04/2023 21:10

Our 8 year old (with suspected autism) goes between 8.30-9.15 and up at 7.30. Until she was 7 it was more like 8ish but it became apparent once she hit age 8 she needed to go later. We have a strict routine but I think it’s important to be able to adjust to the child’s needs so we have done.

DobbleBobble · 10/04/2023 22:19

My youngest is 9, a year or so ago I would try to get him in bed and asleep for 9ish, he would get up about the same time but he is a terrible sleeper and it didn't often work. Oldest is a much better sleeper, but a few years older, I couldn't even guess what time he went to bed at that age really but it was probably earlier. If its working for you don't worry what anyone else is doing.

MsStyles · 10/04/2023 22:32

My dd is almost 8 too (ds is 9). We go up to bed for about 19:30 (we often don’t get in until 19:10 due to work then clubs). At 19:30 they brush teeth then we read. Lights off at 20:00. Dd is asleep within a few minutes. I wake them at 7:15. On Friday and Saturdays they are allowed to watch a movie in their rooms until they fall asleep so she tends so sleep in until 9:30-10:30 at weekends.

T1Dmama · 10/04/2023 22:39

My daughter at 8 would’ve been in bed 9pm earliest! In fact she’s pretty much always gone to sleep at 9pm…. Even as a baby if she went up at 7 she would wake at 11 and stay awake till about 3am…. So for us putting her up later and having her sleep through was the better option!
It’s whatever works for you. I wouldn’t worry about some judgemental person tutting…..

DunePeyton · 10/04/2023 23:39

Generally between 8 and 9.30.

CelestiaNoctis · 11/04/2023 00:16

9pm. Sleeps until 7/8am. She's 7. A friend of hers is the same age and goes to bed at half 7, I can't imagine doing that!

stacyvaron · 11/04/2023 00:52

in bed and settled by 8 pm

TooOldToCareAboutOthersOpinions · 11/04/2023 01:09
