Have you been to a place no one else has been to?

I'll start. The idea is you name the place and a fellow MNer has to say if they've been there. However, you don't have to wait until you've been somewhere to post. Post your places and you'll meet the MNers who've been there. You can post 1-3 places (random numbers).

I've been to:

Rwanda
The Whisundays
Cathedral Grove (Vancouver Island)

Fun fact for Tunnocks teacakes fans, when the RNLI closed the St Abbs lifeboat Station there was a campaign to save it and Tommy Tunnock who founded the teacake business donated a huge amount that allowed the lifeboat station to keep running independently.

That is lovely @BarbaraofSeville

Again in the U.K. I’ve been to New York in the U.K.

Which one? There are several in NE England, the one near Shiremoor is 3 miles from me.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 08/04/2023 15:52

@Deathraystare Hello death! Lovely to see you here! ☺️
Sorry, I claimed Albania then was knocked off by @MrsTerryPratchett or @MrsHamlet if I remember correctly.

SinnerBoy · 08/04/2023 15:55

MrsHamlet

Fly with Loganair. You get a Tunnocks caramel wafer with your tea!

They took over a lot of Eastern's routes, Newcastle to Aberdeen was the last time I flew with them.

Deathraystare · 08/04/2023 15:57

@Mumtobabyhavoc

My fault I hadn't read through! Well, not as well travelled as some places mentioned on here. Do you remember when you went? I think I went in 1987. From the look of people who have travelled there since it has changed a fair bit.

MrsTerryPratchett · 08/04/2023 15:58

Before the thread gets filled up I just wanted to thank all the lovely posters. I never start any threads anyone likes in Chat and I'm glad people liked this one.

Unfortunately you bunch of travellers mean I will have to spend vast amounts of money and time getting to all these places.

It's been lovely hearing about them after a bit of a hiatus for the pandemic. I must dust my rucksack and passport off again.

@NeedToKnow101 what are yours? No one has taken my add-ons of Chilcoot Trail hiking/camping or Tatshenshini River rafting.
I previously listed Maui and Puerto Rico and that's still standing, too. 🤷‍♀️

I did a bit of the Chilcoot. I had forgotten all the names of the places on my Alaskan cruise.
I think Skagway was another stop.

Oh god a lifetime ago... 2004. I had travelled to Greece to watch the Olympics (for the history of it returning there and a post-911 story itself); made my way to Corfu and, on a lark, a day trip by boat to Albania.

I didn’t know that…the New York I went to was in Lincolnshire.

Grrr! I thought I'd keep that one!!! 😁
I have a few more off the path places this way to try. How are things over in your part of the country? It's pissing rain here in YVR.

Ah! There's a Philadelphia next to Washington, in our area.

I had an interesting "discussion" with some American colleagues, regarding the British tradition of naming our towns after theirs...

MaryBoggintonTrotterSmyke · 08/04/2023 16:18

@Mumtobabyhavoc I've been to Puerto Rico, only for a day though (on a cruise, embarrassingly - the PILs are nuts about them)

stormsurfer · 08/04/2023 16:28

@marcopront - no I actually got off and walked in it! It was quite scary with all the basalt columns and the waves coming in!

What was Rwanda like? I would love to go to see the gorillas, but it's so expensive

I lived there pre genocide and always thought I would go back. It is a stunningly beautiful place with lots of hills covered in a patchwork of crops. There are gorgeous lakes which have low mists sitting over them each morning.
Seeing the gorillas was amazing but sadly my dad had his camera stolen at the airport so I only have memories.

It’s sunny and 4 degrees. (Minus 1 with windchill.)

So many places to read through and aspire to going to!

Ones I've seen mentioned and have been to: Dead Sea, wadi rum, lake titicaca, Mellon udrigle, xian, Kuching, twin towers,

3 from my list to try:
Fingals Cave
Jerash, Jordan
Top of Leaning Tower of Pisa from a time before they wouldn't let anyone go up it.

Sorry, been to Jerash and the top of the leaning tower of Pisa. Didn't know you couldn't go up there any more, but that makes sense.

Many thanks for starting the thread. It's been really interesting and there are big gaps in my travel experience I would love to fill.

stormsurfer · 08/04/2023 17:43

@Azure ah well, I tried!

MrsHamlet · 08/04/2023 17:50

No Albania for me. It's on the list though... too late for 2023 though. I've only just booked that one

Not been to Hiddensee but it made me think of Texel, one of the Dutch Wadden Islands. Quite a sweet little place.

Hiddensee was gorgeous. So peaceful.Only Germans and Danes generally go there. My cousin took me there.

kissthegirlshesnotbehindthedoor · 06/04/2023 05:25

I might win:

Antarctica
Rapa Nui (Easter Island)
Qaqortoq, Greenland

And then one for luck:
Spitsbergen, Norway

If anyone else has been there, then I know what job you did/place you worked at!

Sorry @kissthegirlshesnotbehindthedoor I've been to Spitsbergen and Antarctica. Holiday not work though.

Throwing into the ring:
Sierra Leone
Falkland Islands
South Georgia (the island, not US)

I cheated and did a double post...

Demerara River in Guyana.
Mazunte in Oaxaca in Mexico.
Chiloe in Chile.
Vilcabamba, Ecuador.
Merida, Venezuela

abbey44 · 08/04/2023 18:17

Tokeh beach, just outside Freetown in Sierra Leone. One of the most beautiful unspoilt beaches I’ve ever been to, it’s where they filmed the Bounty adverts in the 80s, before the civil war and Ebola.

Bundaberg in Queensland, where they make the most brain-blowing rum.

Kalgoorlie, in Western Australia, where we were given a tour of the gold mine vaults - each of the brick-size bars of gold stacked in there were worth more than my house at the time.

NotHangingAround · 08/04/2023 18:18

I've been to Cathedral Grove on Vancouver Island. Beautiful!

I've been to Garissa in Kenya.
