Have you been to a place no one else has been to?

I'll start. The idea is you name the place and a fellow MNer has to say if they've been there. However, you don't have to wait until you've been somewhere to post. Post your places and you'll meet the MNers who've been there. You can post 1-3 places (random numbers).

I've been to:

Rwanda
The Whisundays
Cathedral Grove (Vancouver Island)

I’ve been to Nosy Mangabe a tiny island off Madagascar where we camped and tried to spot the elusive aye aye.

I'll have to get myself to the Orkney one as well!

Fly with Loganair. You get a Tunnocks caramel wafer with your tea!

Santasoorplooms · 08/04/2023 07:48

@midsomermurderess Ive been to Cassidys - it sadly closed last September :(

vdbfamily · 08/04/2023 07:52

I lived in Rwanda for 10 months. When we moved to current house I discovered 2 neighbours who regular visited Rwanda. That was very strange as not many have been.
I have been to Earth Lodge, Sabi Sabi, adjoining Kruger national park. My nephew was a game warden and they got mates rates on any rooms not booked out by day before.
I have stayed a night with a hilltribe in Thailand but cannot remember their name.
I have been to Eyemouth,Scotland, to pay respect to all my ancestors who drowned in the UKs worst fishing disaster.

Oh. I thought it must have been done well with all the tourism. Maybe younger family members wanted a different life.

@BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn I'm very jealous, that's exactly the journey I'd like to make! One day... How was the ferry part, was it comfortable?

I did the Trans Mongolian in early autumn so no snow either, unfortunately. In fact I had a bad cold so spent most of the journey reading War & Peace in my bunk and making myself ginger tea from the samovar at the end of the carriage Grin. I just like being on trains though - after Mongolia I took the train down to HK and then up to Tibet which was amazing.

QuintanaRoo · 08/04/2023 08:05

Dh has been up the Emley Mast.

Again in the U.K. I’ve been to New York in the U.K. also Wasps Nest!

dittbtdity · 08/04/2023 08:06

I've dived from Eyemouth and St Abbs and been to see the memorial to the lost fishermen.

Fun fact for Tunnocks teacakes fans, when the RNLI closed the St Abbs lifeboat Station there was a campaign to save it and Tommy Tunnock who founded the teacake business donated a huge amount that allowed the lifeboat station to keep running independently.

I lived in Juba , Southern Sudan, as a young child . My parents were aid workers and covered that area for the UN’s freedom from hunger campaign .

This is such an interesting thread , makes me want to go off somewhere new as soon as possible!

NeedToKnow101 · 08/04/2023 11:04

stormsurfer · 08/04/2023 12:14

So many places to read through and aspire to going to!

Ones I've seen mentioned and have been to: Dead Sea, wadi rum, lake titicaca, Mellon udrigle, xian, Kuching, twin towers,

3 from my list to try:
Fingals Cave
Jerash, Jordan
Top of Leaning Tower of Pisa from a time before they wouldn't let anyone go up it.

HuggingtheHRT · 08/04/2023 12:19

Oh wow - serious envy of the Tibet part! I carried on to HK after the Trans Mongolian, too, but then continued south. I really want to do Tibet.

The ferry was very comfortable - there's even a little bathhouse onboard. I got the 1st class cabin though - the big dorms with only curtains instead of doors to the corridor looked considerably more challenging. Good if you want all night card games with your fellow passengers though. The stop in Korea was a good few hours, but the port is some way out of town so there's not really time to go anywhere other than a general leg-stretching walk. And there were a few oddities on board - like the soft drink vending machine only taking one currency and the beer one only taking a different one. And a complicated ticket system for the restaurants. It's been taken over by a new company since Covid, so not sure what it's like now.

@NeedToKnow101 I read about that story - incredible!

The people in the town were very kind in a surreal (and tragic) experience. But I didn't make any friends or get invited to any barbecues like in Come From Away Grin. I was busy looking after my elderly mum who was just completely thrown by the whole thing.

NeedToKnow101 · 08/04/2023 13:52

Oh I've thought of two more:
Hiddensee, little island in northern Germany with no cars.

And Stralsund, Northern German medieval port.

midsomermurderess · 08/04/2023 13:58

Not been to Hiddensee but it made me think of Texel, one of the Dutch Wadden Islands. Quite a sweet little place.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 08/04/2023 14:41

One I want to visit but haven't yet: anyone here been to Matharan?

I've been to Fingal's cave

What was Rwanda like? I would love to go to see the gorillas, but it's so expensive

Deathraystare · 08/04/2023 15:45

Well not so rare as some but been to Albania. One lady in our group was with the first touring group from UK. She was picked up by a bus saying Albania on the front. Someone at her bus stop asked where she was going. I imagine then they must have said where?

It has certainly changed since I was there - two years after Enver Hoxha died and the world has certainly heard of it now!!!

Mumtobabyhavoc · 08/04/2023 15:47

@NeedToKnow101 what are yours? No one has taken my add-ons of Chilcoot Trail hiking/camping or Tatshenshini River rafting.
I previously listed Maui and Puerto Rico and that's still standing, too. 🤷‍♀️
