Does anyone else feel insulted by the Tesco self service machines?

Whenever I but a bottle of wine, which happens often, a Tesco worker has to come over and press a button that says 'This customer is CLEARLY over 25'. Why so passive aggressive? Why not 'no id required from customer'. I know I look like a bag of shit buying my wine and crisps after a long week, the last thing I need is a dig from a computer that can't even weigh pick and mix properly.

Not in the slightest

FawnFrenchieMum · 03/04/2023 06:33

What a random post, it’s the cashier deciding your ‘clearly’ over 25 not the computer and the message is for them to remember to ID any one who looks under 25 not to make you feel bad!

Weallgottachangesometime · 03/04/2023 06:37

😂 I’ve not noticed this.
Sounds similar to the Netflix “Are you STILL watching” message. Damn judgemental machines!

When I bought alcohol at the cashier last she asked for ID and then after looking at me for a while said “actually don’t worry, it’s ok” and pressed, I assume, the ‘clearly over 25’ button.

TerrysGotPeeves · 03/04/2023 06:41

Well why do you think that being presumed to be over 25 is offensive? It's not like being over 25 is a bad thing

EstherUrsula · 03/04/2023 06:46

What would make you think of buying wine at 6.30am on a Monday morning?

This thread is going to go way off tangent now 😂

Rockingcloggs · 03/04/2023 06:49

But you need to be CLEARLY over the age of 25! It's not insulting, it's just a fact!

Now if someone was buying M&Ms and Doritos and it came up with 'is the customer clearly fat' then I'd agree but nah, it's not insulting!

IglesiasPiggl · 03/04/2023 06:49

Well I am clearly over 25, which I regard as a good thing. Are you not happy being the age you are?

GoodChat · 03/04/2023 06:50

I'm with you OP.
I was ready to throw fists the first time someone pressed 'clearly over 25' for me Grin

Then again i got refused some kind of stupid medicine a few weeks back - something paracetamol based but I can't remember what - because I didn't have ID even though the age restriction for them is 16

Cakemonger · 03/04/2023 06:53

😂

category12 · 03/04/2023 06:56

I feel insulted by the Lidl ones that say "have you scanned ALL your shopping?" at the end.

What are you suggesting, Lidl-machine?! Are you calling me a thief?

GnomeDePlume · 03/04/2023 07:05

John Lewis checkout staff used to ask

'How will you pay for that?'

Always felt quite judgemental - I was tempted to answer 'I do have a job!'

LampHat · 03/04/2023 07:23

Also with you OP! I hear that statement in my head with a big, bold clearly over 25😬

DiscoBeat · 03/04/2023 07:28

They don't even look at me any more before pressing the button. That's depressing!

PussBilledDuckyPlait · 03/04/2023 07:30

Couldn't care less!

CaptainMyCaptain · 03/04/2023 07:30

Of course it's not insulting. I have grandchildren old enough to buy alcohol it's just a routine check.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 03/04/2023 07:35

It's obviously a lighthearted post! Chill out everyone! 😂🙄

Oblomov23 · 03/04/2023 07:37

No.

DustyLee123 · 03/04/2023 07:38

No, I dont feel insulted.

Changeau · 03/04/2023 07:39

If you are genuinely this triggered by a perfectly innocuous message then maybe you should stop buying wine for a bit.

Mothership4two · 03/04/2023 07:41

Order an online grocery shop with alcohol from Amazon OP. They always ask to see proof of my age even though I am in my 50s.

It makes me smile that if you buy alcohol-free wine or beer from supermarkets they still make the same checks.

Mothership4two · 03/04/2023 07:43

Methinks the OP is being tongue in cheek @@Changeau

WeWereInParis · 03/04/2023 07:46

It's to remind the staff member that in order to approve it without checking ID, they need to check you are clearly over 25. Not probably over 25, or probably not under 18.

Random789 · 03/04/2023 07:49

The message that gets to me is Amazon's "Do you need help?" on its search result pages.
When I am frantically repeat-searching for the right present, the right gadget etc, the question starts to seem like a snarky way of suggesting that I might be having a mental breakdown.
