Does anyone else feel insulted by the Tesco self service machines?

Whenever I but a bottle of wine, which happens often, a Tesco worker has to come over and press a button that says 'This customer is CLEARLY over 25'. Why so passive aggressive? Why not 'no id required from customer'. I know I look like a bag of shit buying my wine and crisps after a long week, the last thing I need is a dig from a computer that can't even weigh pick and mix properly.

I bought paint thinner in B&Q recently and was delighted when he asked me for ID, given I'm 44. Only I went back later in the day for some other thing that apparently needs ID, and the same guy goes "I'm going to need to see your ID again" and then went for the full chat up (looking good, do you work out etc), so I now avoid him and nobody ID's me!

The Tesco machines make me laugh when you use the searching feature, and it says, "Please type in your item or have a browse 😁

Yes Tesco, I'm going to just have a random browse of the products you sell, which I don't actually have in my basket like I'm going through Hello! magazine 😆

And then there's the game of what they've actually called it on the system. Peppers always piss me off because the different colours are priced different yet it you type red you only get red onion.

Peppers are listed as peppers (red) 😂

Yes, perhaps the message should be something like;
"My, you don't look old enough to be buying alcohol - let me just check."

The blurry message that appears for me reads;
"You again! You bought six bottles last week. Paracetamol as well? Well, I think we know why you need that"

Actually, no, scratch my last post. The REAL worst thing is when the machine requires cashier approval and you say to the cashier "Why! I haven't bought any alcohol! I haven't even bought some pretend alcohol" and she is forced to tell you it is because you have bought some constipation relief BlushBlush

(Why does constipation relief have to be so fiercely guarded? Do young people sniff it for kicks?)

Maybe for shits and giggles...boom boom.
I'll get my coat.

Lockedinforwinter · 03/04/2023 08:32

I guess it depends how old you are. If you are 20, then yes that is insulting. If you are 40, then it is just a fact.

GnomeDePlume · 03/04/2023 08:33

I was only age-challenged a couple of times once I turned 18. Probably because I started looking middle-aged in my early teens from all the unchallenged under-aged smoking.

There's a moral in there somewhere.

What form will the challenge take? Do you have to explain your bowel movements (or lack thereof) with the cashier? Will they stage an intervention and replace the laxatives with a bag of prunes and a box of allbran?

I find with printers it's when they go through some sort of long winded warm up process which cannot be interrupted.

Five minutes of grumbling, whirring, things moving backwards and forwards. All I want it to do is print a letter yet it acts like it is getting ready to run a marathon!

😂
I could cook a 3 course meal in the time it takes my printer to get off its arse!

🙄 CLEARLY some have not found their sense of humour on this fine Monday morning.

This reminds me of the thread where the OP threw a tantrum because they were not asked for ID, when they usually are!

Some people just want to look 15 forever I guess.

Ifailed · 03/04/2023 09:10

light-hearted or not, it just shows how much Tesco are absolving themselves of any responsibilty on the sale of age-restricted items, and placing it solely on their staff.
"You agreed that the under-cover customer clearly looked over 25, it's all your fault"

VimtoVimto · 03/04/2023 09:13

Wireless printers - I spend hours trying to get my phone/laptop to find the printer despite being two feet away.

Chatbots who ask if you need help five seconds into visiting a website, then after you have asked a question refer you to FAQs. I end up having muttering passive aggressively at them that I’d asked the question because it wasn’t covered, especially when you get into a cycle of it referring you to something that doesn’t answer the question, then it asks if you want more help etc

Was that the guy who was offended because a clearly gay cashier didn't ask? Grin

Oh I can’t remember if the cashier was gay but I remember him going home and crying about it, and he posted here because his partner wasn’t supportive!

Quisquam · 03/04/2023 09:22

A self service till at WH Smith told me last week, a staff member had to authorise the sale of a packet of Rennies! I walked off and left it, because I couldn’t see the only staff member in sight, leaving her till when she had a long queue of people to serve!

Honestly, I feel like I am wandering around on the Marie Celeste, trying to find the actual staff in shops these days!

CurlewKate · 03/04/2023 09:22

🤣
But seriously, I feel insulted that a multi billion international company is saving money by dispensing with employees and expecting me not to notice and/or care.

Keeween · 03/04/2023 09:23

🤣 fucking passive aggressive machines just bopping around the place being cunts 🤣

Zebedee55 · 03/04/2023 09:24

I ordered a couple of kitchen knives from Amazon, and the courier needed to see ID to make sure I was over 18.

I'm a pensioner granny with grandkids older than he was lol 😗

MrNook · 03/04/2023 09:25

Well I could tell your post was lighthearted and emphasising the clearly over 25 OP 😆 not sure everyone got that this was lighthearted!

GoodChat · 03/04/2023 09:25

Yeah that's the one I'm thinking of @Glitteratitar - he was furious because he thought the cashier fancied him Grin

Sidge · 03/04/2023 09:32

I guess it’s only those of us that are CLEARLY over 25 that are old enough to remember when on Mumsnet people saw a thread for what it was, and didn’t need “lighthearted” put in the title….

I’m with you OP. I think it should say something like “well the shopper is possibly over 25, hard to tell as they’re so fabulously youthfully radiant but we’ll ask a cashier to check and authorise this purchase just in case!”

areyousittingontheremote · 03/04/2023 09:35

Well over 25? I mean I'm 41.
I got IDd the other day by the Aldi man who said he was hypervigilant as they had mystery shoppers in.

My dad said it's because I still have spots they must think I'm a teenager.

I laugh it off because I'm happy with my appearance and comfortable with aging.

The checkout wording is for the staff, who work hard, not the customer, who is there buying wine for a nice evening.

MrsDeaconClaybourne · 03/04/2023 09:44

I have no idea why people are taking this so seriously OP. I have had the same thought many times and considered starting a thread on it. It's the cursory glance up and down before pressing that button. Amd yes, I'm in my late 40s. I know I don't look 25 and I don't expect anyone to think I do. It's just a mildly amusing thought of "oh, really, you mean I don't look young and glamorous doing the Tesco shop!" Like the time a friend and I went to a bar where the people in front of us got id'd and my friend asked if they wanted hers and they asked if she'd got her bus pass.

itsgettingweird · 03/04/2023 09:46

🤣🤣🤣🤣

My worse one was when they refused to sell me alcohol for my dad (I don't drink) because despite me CLEARLY being over 25 I had my ds who was 16 at the time with me. And he didn't have ID.

They couldn't figure out why him having ID wouldn't have made any difference as he wasn't 18. 🤷‍♀️🤦‍♀️

I kept saying you're refusing me because you think I'm buying it for my underage DS?

And the lady kept saying "no it's because he's not got ID".

She did eventually admit and accept if he had ID she'd refuse it anyway because he wasn't 18 🤣🤣

itsgettingweird · 03/04/2023 09:48

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 03/04/2023 07:35

It's obviously a lighthearted post! Chill out everyone! 😂🙄

I'm glad someone else wondered why the fun suckers all decided to respond Grin

Dibbydoos · 03/04/2023 09:48

Yes OP I agree, some numbskull made up what thry say and it is insulting, though it may be the visual thing is a defense for underage selling regs if you look over xyz age, though he a t should say 18, right?!

I hate self checkout.

You scan the last item, put it in the bagging area and the f-ing thing is demanding payment, like you get yoyr purse out and remove your payment card, hold it in your hand whilst you scan. These machines are a menace!
