If you were a child in the 90s, what book series did you enjoy ?

I can remember reading a series of books when I was around 10 and enjoying them, but I cannot remember them. It wasn't babysitters club or sweet valley high or any particularly girly books but I have a feeling there were maybe romantic books and maybe 'scary' books that each had their own series if that makes sense . Can you think of why I'm talking about or am I going nuts ?

I’m thinking point horror and was there other point things like point romance etc? Is that maybe what you mean?

i used to read a series about friends who all lived on an island in Maine but I can’t for the life of me remember what that series was called, it had a Dawson’s Creek vibe.

I loved babysitters club and sweet valley twins/high

NoTeaNoShade · 01/04/2023 22:33

The scary book series might have been Point Horror books? I used to love those!

peopleaskweirdstuff · 01/04/2023 22:34

Point horror! You have absolutely nailed it thank you so much!!! I have spent hours thinking I was going nuts!!!!

I read all the variations of Sweet Valley - I remember finding an entire shelf of them in the school library and absolutely loved systematically working my way through them!
I also read the Nancy Drew series which had some romance with its mystery solving, and surely the top 90’s scary books were goosebumps?!

OrigamiOwls · 01/04/2023 22:35

Maybe one of Christopher Pike's series?

BanditsGravyStain · 01/04/2023 22:35

I used to love point horror. Goosebumps were my favourite, I had a subscription and was sent a new book every month or whatever. Had over 200 in the end. I hope they’re still in my parent loft!

I read a series about soap actors in Australia. I think it was called bondi beach??

Mexicocalling · 01/04/2023 22:36

Yes! Point horror! Well remembered PP, how could I have forgotten that 🤦🏻‍♀️ There was definitely a point romance too, I remember thinking they were so grown up with their fancy cover art 🤣

peopleaskweirdstuff · 01/04/2023 22:37

My daughter loves reading too and I was telling her about my books and I've tried to find them on internet but just couldn't think of the name!!!! Thank you wonderful people of Mumsnet!!!

I was going to say Goosebumps!

Nancy Drew - use to love those! And the Saddle Club and the Babysitters Club. And those romance books that always seemed to have Malibu in the title and were a bit embarrassing to have the librarian stamp out!

BeetyAxe · 01/04/2023 22:38

I used to love a series about a character called Anastasia Krupnik- anyone else?!

The Making Out series, with Zoey, Ben, Nina etc? Loved those! But was also a major Sweet Valley fanatic, even read the latest ones where they're in their 30s Blush
Possibly Point Horror or Point Romance in answer to the original OP Smile

Soproudoflionesses · 01/04/2023 22:42

OrigamiOwls · 01/04/2023 22:35

Maybe one of Christopher Pike's series?

I loved his books...especially Fall Into Darkness

TeamSleep · 01/04/2023 22:42

Yes @herrewegoagain thank you! It was the making out series, used to love that they had to get a boat to school! I also remember reading the Anastacia books @BeetyAxe wow I used to spend a lot of time reading as a teenager, those were the days!

TeamSleep · 01/04/2023 22:46

Did I imagine it but is there a new series of sweet valley high on TV? I used to love the 90s series, I thought the twins were perfectly cast and just as I had imagined them. I didn’t realise there’s a series of books about them in their 30s, off to look that up now!

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 01/04/2023 22:48

I opened the thread thinking Goosebumps!

I remember going to the public library and scouring the shelves for point horror that I hadn't read before. It was in the adult section, we felt very grown up.

Also Nancy Drew. I think I've still got them all somewhere, probably in my poor parent's loft...

Bit younger I loved Blyton - famous 5, secret 7, and the one with the kids that run away and live on an island.

Mallory towers. Chalet school.

sakura06 · 01/04/2023 22:50

My best friend loved Point Horror! I was too much of a wuss. Sweet Valley High and Nancy Drew were my favourites.

Chipshopflipshop · 01/04/2023 22:53

Ah do you remember when Jessica in SVH tried to steal the fiancé of her mum's best friend's (who was dead) daughter, Jeremy. He sounded so dreamy.
There was a whole series of point books, point horror, point romance etc.

LiliLil · 01/04/2023 22:57

I LOVED Point Horror and SVH!

R.L Stein was my favourite author, think there were a few Point Horror books with mini stories in if I remember correctly? Off to have a browse on Amazon…

Cakeandslippers · 01/04/2023 22:58

Ah I loved Point Horror books! There was one, particularly excellent one, which introduced me to the concept of an unreliable narrator. I think it was about a summer camp where everyone gets killed till only two people are left and suddenly thr twist comes that the person telling the story is the killer.
The Sweet Valley books were also brilliant. I used to go to the library once a month and get my full allowance of books and devour them!

TheMildManneredMilitant · 01/04/2023 23:01

@TeamSleep was that Sunset Island? Used to love those although pretty trashy.

Yessss me tooo! I'd forgotten about her!

And i loved Point Horror and SVH

MancMamof1 · 01/04/2023 23:04

I used to love the Point Horror books!
Before that it was a lot of Mallory Towers type books.

herrewegoagain · 01/04/2023 23:06

@TeamSleep not sure about a tv show other than the 90s one, but Sweet Valley Confidential is what you're looking for with the books! Came out the year I turned 30, was the perfect present from Francine 😂

ImSidneyFuckingPrescott · 01/04/2023 23:09

@Cakeandslippers I know which one your talking about, it was Nightmares rather than point horror, it was called Class Trip.
