If you were a child in the 90s, what book series did you enjoy ?

I can remember reading a series of books when I was around 10 and enjoying them, but I cannot remember them. It wasn't babysitters club or sweet valley high or any particularly girly books but I have a feeling there were maybe romantic books and maybe 'scary' books that each had their own series if that makes sense . Can you think of why I'm talking about or am I going nuts ?

I remember them Grin

Remember I always wanted to be her sister Rowan who sounded so much fun. Can’t remember the names of her friends now but remember sisters were Lin (Linnhe), Rowan and Ivy and brother was Tor… used to adore those books.

also remember BSC and all its other associated series - especially the ones about Karen - and California Diaries that I read at 23 and thought were incredibly grown up!, compared to the BSC they probably were. Love reading BSC snark online now. Look back and wonder what everyone in Stoneybrook was on leaving a few 11-13 year olds responsible for their children!!

Also sweet valley, sleepover club and animal ark (I think?) and home farm twins.

Kim, Sandi, Billly and Kyra were her friends!!!

Robin Jarvis's the deptford mice trilogy was huge in our school when I was about 8/9.

CatherineMaitland · 02/04/2023 08:46

Redwall books - might even be still going.

Also loved Sheila Lavelle's My Best Fiend books.

Lois Duncan's teen romantic thrillers - Stranger With My Face was always my favourite.

Definitely Point Horror, you can buy them for Kindle now. And Tor Blog is doing a re-read/re-visit of different themes from 90s teen horror.

SVH, babysitters club, nancy drew, point horror, animals of farthing wood, enid blyton series, some roald dahl, and I also read the Adrian Mole series. As I progressed through my teens, I began to read more of the classics and more grown up books rather than teenage books.

MeMyBooksAndMyCats · 02/04/2023 09:02

Harry Potter. Goosebumps, the animal farm series (I can't remember what they were called) but each book was about a different animal they had, babysitters club LOVED these.

SendARavenToRiverRun · 02/04/2023 09:18

I started with Enid Blyton, famous five and Mallory towers were my favourites. I loved a boarding school book. Trebizon was a series that I read and re-read. I desperately wanted to play tennis and have open days where you showed your parents your dorm and had tea with the head mistress!.
Moved onto SVH and BSC. I loved Jessica in the former. Thought Elizabeth was really 'lame' 😆. I loved some of the earlier Jacqueline Wilsom stuff as well. How to survive summer camp was my favourite. Still have the dog eared copied I pinched from the school library!

Autienotnautie · 02/04/2023 09:21

Loved sweet valley twins and high, babysitter club. I always thought Logan sounded great (Mary Ann's bf) loved point horror especially RL Stine . Also loved all Judy Blume and Norma Klien books.

Stranger with my face was scary!!

Class trip sounds excellent and there is a class trip 2 per Amazon (by Katherine Applegate who I recognise from teen stuff)

AmazingBouncingFerret · 02/04/2023 09:27

Pretty much used to read what everyone else has already said but I’d like to add the author Paula Danziger to the list!

MaryJean87 · 02/04/2023 09:31

I loved Point Horror. I still have some of them and reread now and again. There was also a series of books I loved, called Anastasia ( I think). I can't remember the author but I used to absolutely love those books. And I don't know if I'm imagining it but I'm sure there was a series about a preteen girl called Alice that I also really enjoyed.

Drywhitefruitycidergin · 02/04/2023 09:31

Love this thread and loads of the books already mentioned.
Some of the Hardy Boys just as good as Nancy Drew.
Just finished reading Trebizon with my 12 year old & she's now reading Judy Blume - Just as long as we're together 😍.

I think she's s long way off Flowers in the Attic and Jane Eyre which I read as a very young teen!

Ah I loved Point Horror books! There was one, particularly excellent one, which introduced me to the concept of an unreliable narrator. I think it was about a summer camp where everyone gets killed till only two people are left and suddenly thr twist comes that the person telling the story is the killer.
The Sweet Valley books were also brilliant. I used to go to the library once a month and get my full allowance of books and devour them!

I read that one too- it was a nightmare book. The first one I read and I was hooked after that.

There was also a detective series- not Nancy drew.

Saddle club/ pony club
Baby sitter club.

I used to also read point sci-fi and point-fantasy.

Christopher pike. And the started getting into specific authors.

anxiouslemons · 02/04/2023 09:43

Yes! Bringing back all the nostalgic memories!
A book that really made an impression on me was called A Summer To Die (I think?) where a girls sister had cancer.
I remember thinking I was so grown up when I was allowed to buy a Point Horror book (The Waitress)

anxiouslemons · 02/04/2023 09:45

Ah yes, it was Lois Lowry!
The cover is exactly how I remember it. Seeing it brings back memories of the school library Smile

burnoutbabe · 02/04/2023 09:47

I also remember the Caitlin series -9 books about a rich girl who causes a poor girl at schools accident and steels her boyfriend. Went all the way into adulthood.

Used to love tracking down book series in the charity shops when I was 14 or so.

Now it would be impossible as so old and eBay would be the easy but expensive option.
luckily I have all the chalet school books as e books so can read those on the tube.

burnoutbabe · 02/04/2023 09:54

And judy Blume on Sunday with Laura right now!

Her books just been made into a movie!

ChessieFL · 02/04/2023 09:54

I still have many of the books mentioned here! Does anyone else remember the Sisters series?

I read a series about soap actors in Australia. I think it was called bondi beach??

I read those too. Loved them. There was one where one of the characters was dealing with his father's alcoholism. I thought that was quite deep.

GracePooleslaugh · 02/04/2023 10:45

I liked the Trebizon books and the Sadlers Wells books. Does anyone remember The Bewitching of Alison Albright?

icebearforpresident · 02/04/2023 11:04

I loved The Babysitters Club and SVH. The Sisters books posted above look familiar as well.

I very excitedly watched the new Babysitters Club series on Netflix when it came out, it was brilliant! Those of you who loved the books as well should check it out, it will take you right back.

cardboardbox24 · 02/04/2023 14:26

@ChessieFL yes! I can't remember what the books were about but I recognised the front covers instantly.

My mum was a librarian and used to come home from work with carrier bags full of books for me. I would grab them off her as soon as she walked through the door, divide them up into "read it/ not read it" piles and then run upstairs to start reading. I miss having time to read!

BeetyAxe · 01/04/2023 22:38

Me! I read them over and over
