I have finally sorted out the airing cupboard after looking at the stuff shoved instead it when we first moved in. We've been here nearly 3 years

HildaTablet · 06/06/2023 17:13

I can see it’s going to be me who has to say a resounding no to the 🍍 on 🍕😂😂

mathanxiety · 06/06/2023 17:46

Well done cushioncovers

I have three bags ready to take to Goodwill after the weekend.

There's a landscaping company currently ripping up the horribly cracked and holey concrete in the parking area at the alley, which will be replaced with crushed gravel. DS is out of town so I had to park his car as well as mine on the street and get night parking permits for both cars. I hate parking on the street overnight because of the catalytic converter thefts that have been occurring here, and also because DS's car is a Kia and has already been broken into, a few months ago (they are apparently easy to start using a screwdriver). He has a steering wheel Club now, but I'm still nervous.

Anyway, I suspect the crushed gravel parking area will turn into the crushed gravel swimming pool when it rains, and when we try to shovel snow off it next winter we'll end up shoveling a lot of crushed gravel too. Hopefully the LL will come to her senses eventually, and just pay for proper concrete paving. There isn't an inch of rebar in what the crew have dug up so far, which is why it's so cracked and holey.

Also, the landscapers have piled mulch around the trunks of the trees in the front and back yards in volcano fashion, which according to the municipal forestry department (they send a newsletter to all addresses in the suburb) is a no-no as it alters the way the bark functions at the base of the trees and can hasten the demise of the tree.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 06/06/2023 18:27

Oh, @HildaTablet I'm so disappointed. 😢🍍

What are you favoutite toppings, though?😋😀

HildaTablet · 06/06/2023 19:04

Sorry to be a spoilsport havoc - but if you offered me a quattro formaggi I’d probably bite your hand off 🍕🍕🍽😍

I'm thinking of baking something tomorrow but no idea what. It’s been a disappointingly grey and chilly day, I don’t know where our summer has gone.

MissConductUS · 06/06/2023 20:42

Welcome, @cushioncovers, and thanks for sharing your airing cupboard news. I don't think I've ever had an airing cupboard. I've googled them and they sound like a fine idea.

Math, it's nice that they are renovating your parking lot, but with the snow you get I don't know if gravel is a good idea. Won't it all get scraped away by the snow plows?

The central AC is fixed. An electrical part (the condenser) had failed. Fortunately, the AC bloke had one on his work van and it wasn't terribly expensive to replace.

DD came home from the gym last night with a flat tyre. She hit a pothole just down the road from the house at some speed. DH had someone from our local garage come out and put on the spare. They took the tire and rim back to the shop. The tire is ruined, but the rim is fine. The tyres on her car are fairly old, so we're getting four new ones. She's thrilled, as she loves that car and pampers it. Tyres have gotten very expensive. I'm glad she'll have new ones on the car when she takes it back to uni in September.

I'm sitting in bed with icy cold feet. Can't believe how cold it is today.
I read that 2 Brazil nuts are good to help you sleep, so I've put some in a little jar by the bed. Unfortunately I've just eaten 7 of them because I'm a pig I love nuts.
I have a week off grandson-minding so I went swimming yesterday and had a foot massage today. I still feel guilty about pampering myself, though I shouldn't.

Deathraystare · 07/06/2023 08:05

Those of you who like pineapple on pizza should thank your lucky stars that this is a friendly posting site (cannot think of exact word). Anywhere else on here and you would be frogmarched away from Mumsnet, forever!!!

Mumtobabyhavoc · 07/06/2023 16:58

Iwandered, I can relate. Have put my heated blanket back on my bed. Also, lately I'm loving pecans (pecaahns, a roommate from southern USA told me). I've been making a little trail mix with pecans, dark choc chips, and dried cherries for an afternoon snack. 😛

Oh, Death.... who could hate an occasional ham and pineapple pizza - perhaps Canada's greatest culinary contribution to the world?
🍍🇨🇦🤣

Helena, how did confirmation and celebration at your house after go?

Hilda, I'd share that pizza! 😛 I baked a pineapple (theme) coconut loaf yesterday if you're still looking for ideas. 😛

Was up (sweating, congested and coughing) at 7. Load of laundry in. Havoc bathed. Me bathed. Breakfast laid out. Currently sipping a latte and watching the street cleaner go by. Haven't seen one on our street in a while.

(for those keeping track: 4w2d sick. 😢)

MissConductUS · 07/06/2023 18:41

We have ham on pizza once in a while, but never pineapple. We don't usually have fresh pineapple in the house. DH used to get it when the kids were little, as DS loved it. Pizza shops in the US very commonly offer pineapple.

I stepped out to have a walk at lunchtime. I only went about half of my normal distance as the air quality is awful here due to forest fires in Canada. It smells like being in a room with a roaring wood fire going in the fireplace. It's so bad that the NYC area airports aren't letting planes take off due to poor visibility.

It's not just NYC. The whole east coast down to the Carolinas are experiencing this. We may have to start calling the whole coast "the big smoke".

DD's car is ready. They've replaced the tyres and replaced the brake light bulbs. She and I will pick it up after work tonight.

Canadian wildfire smoke pushes NYC residents indoors, city briefly had world's worst air quality

New York City's air quality rating briefly ranked the worst of any city in the world Tuesday, according to the IQAir World Air Quality Index.

That's awful MissConductUS .
Hope it passes soon .

bizzey · 08/06/2023 01:38

It's been coming up on my news feed and sounds so scary.

mathanxiety · 08/06/2023 01:57

MissC the snow problem is exactly what my neighbour and I were pondering earlier today. We partly hope it will be a disaster and the LL will order repaving with concrete and partly crossing fingers it will work out fine. My relatively new brakes were squeaking today, probably thanks to gravel dust.

I've seen amazing photos from the smoky east coast online. We have a little smoke here too but nothing like yours. I hear people are being advised to wear N95 masks.

HildaTablet · 08/06/2023 07:43

The air quality problem has made the news here because Jodie Comer (of 'Killing Eve' fame) had to walk offstage on Broadway saying she was struggling to breathe.

It sounds horrendous, take care, all of you who are affected.

IWanderedLonely · 08/06/2023 21:40

Just been to my mum's to say goodbye to DB, who is flying back to Australia tonight. Sorry it's not calm, but I am broken. DM is 92, DB can't afford to come back that often. I have bought wine and drank for the first time in 9 months. Sorry.

bizzey · 08/06/2023 22:10

Gosh IWandered...that must have been so difficult for you x.

Enjoy your wine (which one did you get ? .)

Remember...that will go to your head so quick after 9 months .

Hope the lovely evening you had with your brother makes it a bit less painful for you 😔

Mumtobabyhavoc · 08/06/2023 23:07

Iwandered, I'm sorry you are hurting. The older we get the more we are aware of how precious little time we have to make the most of what matters. Sending you love from across the pond. 💖

MissConductUS · 09/06/2023 00:27

Iwandered, I'm sorry you're feeling low. Goodbyes are really hard sometimes. Go easy on the wine. Alcohol is a depressant.

The air quality was a bit better here today, but bad enough that most flights are still being canceled. Apparently, the pilots can't see the runways. We had a tex/mex takeaway for dinner, one of DD's favorites.

I wish I had gone for a take away tonight!
Instead I really fancied an omelette using my last 2 eggs that I had .
(DS had already eaten)

Unfortunately...my dexterity was not working with my brain ...and as I picked up the box ...one egg fell and smashed on the floor and the other on the counter !! Which was just about savable!

I made a one egg omelette....not Sure if it was worth the effort 😂!

bizzey · 09/06/2023 00:58

I have ordered a dress for ds's graduation!

I was going to use a frock I last wore 13 years ago ....but the multi-way bras I bought to try with the dress beat me to submission!!

I just couldn't work out how it all worked and decided I felt like a trussed up turkey ready for the oven on Christmas/Thanksgiving (!!) morning 😂.

Silkierabbit · 09/06/2023 01:12

So sorry Iwandered and sending love.

Glad air is getting better MissC

Had a few meetings re DS and an education one tomorrow, not holding my breathe for anything useful coming out of that. Then later swimming and collect my special toothpaste and Tamoxifen. And then cahms home visit on Monday, DD is very fearful for our wall. Though the man is lovely spoke with him today. LA are still being useless and also told me they were unnerved that I had suggested they had secret meetings and implied I was imagining it, I pointed out I knew of 9 of them and had minutes of 3. They may have stopped but they are so dishonest I don't trust them one inch and their only objective seems spending as little as possible and delaying things as much as possible for same reason. Though 2 staff have gone and no longer employed with no current job so it might just have been them but hmm I doubt it.

HelenaJustina · 09/06/2023 06:53

Hope it goes okay today silkie do you think they are stalling until DS is 18 and no longer entitled to full time education or training?

The Confirmation and subsequent celebration was lovely thanks Havoc we’ve just about finished the leftovers! Did have to dose up DC3 to get them through it but they also enjoyed the day.

HildaTablet · 09/06/2023 08:06

I’m so sorry, IWandered, that’s hard to deal with. Hope you’re OK.

DuckyShincracker · 09/06/2023 09:29

I've got my only day off this week. I'm going to clean the bathroom and put a prescription in. DP bless him, is trying to finish early to take me for some sort of treat. I'd like to go to B&Q to look at plants I don't think that's what he had in mind!

MissConductUS · 09/06/2023 15:08

Welcome, @DuckyShincracker, and thanks for sharing your calming news. I finished my plant shopping last weekend, thank goodness. Where do you think your DP wants to take you?

The air quality is much improved today, thanks to winds from the east blowing the smoke further into the US. I've just seen a forecast that it may get worse again over the weekend.

DD got a passport for a trip she wants to take to Isreal in December. It arrived about two weeks ago I think. She's just noticed that it lists her gender as male, despite her application and birth certificate stating female. She now has to return it with her birth certificate and request a corrected one.
