Shopping in the past

I'd love to go back in time 20/25 years to do my food shop. Not just for the prices but to find:

Sweetener free soft drinks.
Easter Eggs that you crack open to find the chocs inside.
The original lovely cadburys chocolate in purple foil. And kit kits in foil. All chocolate in foil, it just tasted better.
Salt & vinegar crisps that made your eyes water.
Toffee ripple ice cream.

I also miss having camera film processed whilst doing my shopping and excitedly opening the envelope in the car. Definitely rose tinted specs here as I can remember it costing £4/£5 for each film to be processed plus a few quid for the film - and half the photos were crap 😆

Any more?

Wispa gold with the caramel in it. 4 varieties of Vesta meals. Chicken and sweetcorn Pot Rice. Kwik Save No Frills and Tesco Value for proper cheap stuff that's immediately visible on the shop shelf.

DevantMaJardin · 24/03/2023 14:04

Oh and that Tesco Bubble and Squeak in the foil pouches, that you fried. Was thinking of those yesterday.

A lot less artificial sweetener right across the board. Now it feels like I have to check most labels, and certainly ketchup, relish and yoghourt. I can't stand sweeteners.

Specific product: this may still be available, actually, but the shop where I bought it is long gone. Little tubs of Greek yoghourt, Total brand, strawberry flavoured. It was lovely.

Oh yeah, I hadn't realised tesco value had gone

AlisonHalligan · 24/03/2023 14:09

Oh yes, I'd love to find an Easter egg now with chocolates inside the egg. Just an egg and an ordinary packet of buttons is not the same.

Smarties has loose smarties inside the chocolate egg. The egg rattles and everything!

halfsiesonapotnoodle · 24/03/2023 14:13

Rowntree toffee and mallow eggs. I wish they'd bring something similar back!

Mm that was great. I used to take it camping and have it with beans and fried eggs. Yum.

Totally agree ! When did eggs get so crap ? They were so pretty when I was little, I loved opening them to find the chocolates inside.

redbrik · 24/03/2023 14:16

I'd like to see all the delicious golden wonder crisps come back. In fact all the good crisps from the past:

Sausage and tomato
Beef and onion
Marmite
Proper walkers bbq (not the new bbq rib things)
Roast chicken
Etc

All the corner shops near me, or anywhere, just have boring old walkers in the same boring flavours. Plus a few popcorn loada shit

redbrik · 24/03/2023 14:18

Nik naks
Bugles
Wheat crunchies

WHERE HAVE ALL THE CRISPS GONE?!

Is it the sugar tax? Or what?

Needmorelego · 24/03/2023 14:29

You can still get Wispa Gold and Wheat Crunchies.
Tesco 'value' range technically still exists they just use 'fake' brand names - like Biscuits and Cake is under the name of "Molly's Bakery" or something (Sainsbury's does the same).

Needmorelego · 24/03/2023 14:30

You can also still get Golden Wonder crisps.

All the current £1/£1.50 cadburys ones have buttons/mini eggs inside, without a packet!

Cadburys Buttons, Mini Eggs, Freddos and Smarties ones. Small box around £1.50

SchoolTripDrama · 24/03/2023 14:33

@SirVixofVixHall See my comment above, the current £1.50 eggs all have chocolates inside

SchoolTripDrama · 24/03/2023 14:35

These ones.

I bought Wispa gold the other day, so that is still around

Also Easter eggs do still have foil around them?

I haven't seen them for ages. Certainly not in single packets with the lunch stuff

redbrik · 24/03/2023 15:21

Or on Ocado

OMG I was talking about these at work this morning! My mouth was watering 😂

PeskyRooks · 24/03/2023 15:28

I'd like a coconut Boost and an almond Yorkie please. Also some beef Dragon Puffs a full size Mars Bar and some proper Sugar Puffs that are sticky so you can put your hand in the box and eat the ones that stick.

Diet free drinks

l lost 2 stone in 1982 on Diet Coke. That’s 40 years ago. It was everywhere in 2003 too…..

Shekissedagirlandshelikedit · 24/03/2023 15:31

I need to get some of those eggs with chocs inside.

Yes I remember Easter Eggs being much more attractive with ribbons, cellophane etc but I guess the packaging had to change. They used to look glorious on the shelves in woolies. Now they're just all in branded boxes. Same with selection boxes at Christmas - they aren't as exciting as the ones in the netting shaped like a stocking with MASSIVE chocolate bars.

Supermarket value ranges are much harder to find. For a while sainsburys had the Hubbards stuff all together at the back if the shop but it's spread around now and usually hiding at the bottom of the shelf.

Probably rose tinted specs again but I remember Supermarket shopping being really pleasant in the 90s. Out of town hypermarkets were popping up all over the place and they felt so spacious with loads of choice and the great value cafe and instore bakery.

It's hard to find drinks without any sweeteners in at all now. Certainly not in the cheaper ranges. I think there's still full fat coke. I'd love to taste proper cherryade again.
