Shopping in the past

I'd love to go back in time 20/25 years to do my food shop. Not just for the prices but to find:

Sweetener free soft drinks.
Easter Eggs that you crack open to find the chocs inside.
The original lovely cadburys chocolate in purple foil. And kit kits in foil. All chocolate in foil, it just tasted better.
Salt & vinegar crisps that made your eyes water.
Toffee ripple ice cream.

I also miss having camera film processed whilst doing my shopping and excitedly opening the envelope in the car. Definitely rose tinted specs here as I can remember it costing £4/£5 for each film to be processed plus a few quid for the film - and half the photos were crap 😆

Any more?

I'm a 90's child so can't go as far back but I remember loads of things I want again!
Refresher Ice Lollies (when i was pregnant I wished for these so much!)
Cadburys Honeycomb Hoops
Guylian Seashell Bars
The Polo's that were flavoured
Sports biscuits (can get these in rare places)
A proper pick and mix! Not just 10 different sweets basically the same 🙄
Smints Strawberry
Candy sticks that doesn't taste and feel like chaulk in your mouth!
I agree Easter eggs have gone downhill!
Echo Bars!! I so miss these too 😍

Fuse bars. Your mum buying you and your sibling one at the end of the food shop was the best.

Yes that Rosti was usually alongside the bubble and squeak. Then one day I went to buy them both and they had disappeared.
Which German company did you use ?

This one-they're not cheap though. https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwjapt32s_X9AhWJM8AKHUUYDW4QFnoECA0QAQ&url=https%3A%2F%2Fuk.germanfoods.shop%2FHome&usg=AOvVaw2R3Znq0M-1c58DP9d5ZUuk

I used to use the post service “Truprint” - you got a free film back with your prints. I was remembering that not so long ago, when looking through old photo albums. Ahhh those were the days 😁

In 2021 after my wedding I started using Snapfish, it's an app similar to how Trueprint was as you get 50 free prints a month and postage is about £3.50.

I've since been going back across all the old photos on my phone and on Facebook and having them printed each month. I hadn't had photos developed since 2007 when DD was born.

Photo albums are always in second hand shops now and it's so nice to have actual photos again to flick through.

Brannigan's beef and mustard crisps
Pot noodles (before I realised how awful they are)
Getting a double vodka and coke for £1.50

Also being able to eat all the junk and not gain weight

Here’s what I bought back then...

Asda Coconut Pineapple Juice
Curry Super Noodles
M&S Butter Tablet bag
M&S Chocolate Layer Bar
Woolworths Pick’n’Mix
M&S Cottage Pie (much saucier)
Original Percy Pigs
Safeway Jam Tarts
Sainsbury’s Mixed Cake Slices
Philleas Fogg Tortillas
PF Mignons Morceaux
Cadbury Roses in a bag
Cadbury Mini Creme Eggs bag
Sainsburys Chicken Tikka Masala
M&S Peach Mousse Desserts
Onken Mousse Pots
Fru Fru (or something!) Mousse
Starbucks Blueberry Muffins
Starbucks Mocha original
Burger King Chicken Royale
Burger King Bean Burger
Debenhams Afternoon Tea

Loads more, I’m sure...

Phileas Fogg snacks! Thanks for the reminder. Posh nibbles to enjoy with wine. We always used to buy this faux French brand that was everywhere at the time. Thought it was sooo sophisticated. Can’t remember the name

Where is this earthly paradise? Only expensive brands use metal foil here now.

I have to admit I haven't bought Cadbury chocolate blocks for a long time, but our local brand Whittakers (much, much, superior to Cadbury in every way) is still wrapped in metal and paper. NZ btw. Large Easter eggs were still in foil the last time I bought one.

Gingernaut · 24/03/2023 22:13

Being able to get my hair done, do a load of shopping, sit down for lunch and then waddle home with my shopping trolley without having to get a single bus

QuickNameChangeForMeToday · 24/03/2023 22:14

Oh the nostalgia 🥰.

Cadburys Spiral bar.
M&S mashed potato topped chicken pie.
Littlewoods cooked breakfast on the occasion Saturday morning followed by a pick and mix.

QuickNameChangeForMeToday · 24/03/2023 22:17

Oh and a nestle secret bar!!!

Mephisneon · 24/03/2023 22:19

I had a Cadbury buttons easter egg yesterday and the chocolate buttons were inside.

QuickNameChangeForMeToday · 24/03/2023 22:26

And whatever happened to Kellogg’s Start cereal?

Raineth · 24/03/2023 22:28

I want a tutti frutti ice cream.

Diplidocus4 · 24/03/2023 23:01

Rosti are usually in Home Bargains ? Plastic foil type pouch , sometimes with ham etc - good for camping or quick breakfasts

Salt and vinegar crisps - ones that take the lining from your mouth are Co Op black packet !

howmuchcouldtheyfindout · 24/03/2023 23:53

Go to co op for crisps

sueelleker · 25/03/2023 08:30

Asda (and possibly other places) used to sell Teviot pies. I much preferred them to ones with mash on top.

Zuffe · 25/03/2023 09:27

Icebreaker - a chocolate bar with cold minty taste. The bright turquoise foil was eye catching. 1979’s.

Aqua Libra - cool summer drink made with water, passion fruit, herbs. Trendy label. 1980’s.

Lowicz is Polish, so you might find it in the World Foods section. Talking of bubble and squeak; I had a sudden hankering the other day for some of the vacuum packed rosti in a foil sachet. I couldn't find it anywhere, and had to order on-line from a German food company.

Try Aldi for this they do a couple of versions

SinnerBoy · 25/03/2023 09:41

Dartmoorcheffy · Yesterday

15:41Heinz toast toppers. If I knew they were being discontinued I would have stockpiled them.

I could never stand them. I bet you like -baby puke- Sandwich Spread, too, eh? Bloomin deviant!

😃

SinnerBoy · 25/03/2023 09:43

@Callipygion

I used to love the anticipation of getting a packet of photos back, with the free film. And looking at my sister, or whoever, who had a bong eyed, slack jawed expression, after moving slightly, at the vital moment.

Oh yes, I'd love to find an Easter egg now with chocolates inside the egg. Just an egg and an ordinary packet of buttons is not the same.

I got a Cadbury's mini egg Easter egg yesterday, why I had mini eggs inside the actual egg.
