Shopping in the past

I'd love to go back in time 20/25 years to do my food shop. Not just for the prices but to find:

Sweetener free soft drinks.
Easter Eggs that you crack open to find the chocs inside.
The original lovely cadburys chocolate in purple foil. And kit kits in foil. All chocolate in foil, it just tasted better.
Salt & vinegar crisps that made your eyes water.
Toffee ripple ice cream.

I also miss having camera film processed whilst doing my shopping and excitedly opening the envelope in the car. Definitely rose tinted specs here as I can remember it costing £4/£5 for each film to be processed plus a few quid for the film - and half the photos were crap 😆

Any more?

Lowicz is Polish, so you might find it in the World Foods section. Talking of bubble and squeak; I had a sudden hankering the other day for some of the vacuum packed rosti in a foil sachet. I couldn't find it anywhere, and had to order on-line from a German food company.

Yes that Rosti was usually alongside the bubble and squeak. Then one day I went to buy them both and they had disappeared.
Which German company did you use ?

I enjoyed using Triple Print for film developing. You could share your prints with friends or make your photo album more interesting with the mini prints.

I would like to get some Rowntree's Fruit Gums because they were really hard to chew and todays version are too soft. Same with Rolos, they are very soft now and were much tougher in the old days.

I would love to pick up some 80's style stickers and smelly rubbers.

Bassett's Fruit Bon Bons seem to have disappeared.

Where would we get the old money from?

A lot less artificial sweetener right across the board. Now it feels like I have to check most labels, and certainly ketchup, relish and yoghourt. I can't stand sweeteners.

Specific product: this may still be available, actually, but the shop where I bought it is long gone. Little tubs of Greek yoghourt, Total brand, strawberry flavoured. It was lovely.

Fage sell strawberry greek yoghurt, it's called Fage total- are you thinking of that? It's available in Tesco if so

Thanks, this thread prompted me to look for it and I see it's quite widely available so am planning to get some. It's labelled as new, though, so I imagine was withdrawn a long time ago and now they've either reintroduced it or had another go. The one I recall was a set yoghourt flavoured with juice.

Shekissedagirlandshelikedit · 24/03/2023 18:12

Oh yes Rolos are a waste of time now. Tiny tubes that are gone in a few mouthfuls. Their only saving grace is they're still in foil but probably not for long.

I miss Toffo. They were amazing. I loved the mint and the assorted ones.

I really hope Reisens don't get crap. They are the only chocolate toffees worth buying.

Tuuuuuuuuuunes are crap now too.

Heinz vegetable salad in a tin.

I'm of Eastern European extraction and have slaved for decades trying to make a decent vegetable salad. The Heinz one was lovely.

Nothing more joyful than this sight on a Saturday afternoon in Woolies with my Nana 🙌🏻😍

I miss the size of the chocolate bars from the 90s and the fact that loads were in paper and foil. Can you remember how wide Dairy Milk, Galaxy and Aeros used to be?

My corner shop used to have a massive selection of 10p crisps which I loved.

Mix ups or pick n mix depending on where your from, loads of variety and 1p -2p and you got them in a paper bag.

Ooh and those flavoured Polo sweets, you could get a green packet I think they were called Citrus something and the cream colour packet that were like butterscotch?

Obviously you can tell I was a child in the 90s because all of my shopping misses are sweet based. 😂

Epicstorm · 24/03/2023 18:40

RosaMoline · I swear you used to be able to get Milk Tray chocs, but in a bar version…no one I know can remember them! I’m sure I didn’t dream it.
It was delish.

I remember although I’d forgotten about it.

Potato puffs. Don’t know what make they were but they were in a red bag. Very morish.

exitlight · 24/03/2023 18:41

Potato puffs!

What is chocolate in the UK packaged in? Where I live we still have foil.

QuitRunningForThatRunawayBus · 24/03/2023 18:48

Did I dream it, or was there an egg called a border creme egg? It had chocolate cream in it rather than the white and yellow filling. Does anyone else remember them?

Turnipworkharder · 24/03/2023 18:48

I heard kit kats stopped using foil as junkies would buy them.to smoke heroin with.dont know how true that is but shaun rider said in his autobiography that he used them for that!

AlisonHalligan · 24/03/2023 14:09

Oh yes, I'd love to find an Easter egg now with chocolates inside the egg. Just an egg and an ordinary packet of buttons is not the same.

The little cadburys ones this year have them in the egg! I was thrilled! Mini eggs, buttons etc IN THE EGG!!! Like when I was a kid!

tobee · 24/03/2023 18:52

Was the chocs inside the egg stopped for safety reasons?

I miss the foil too! Lots of things have been messed about with!

Not so bothered about the photos though as they were often a disappointment on opening! I like the delete function on my phone!

tobee · 24/03/2023 18:55

The whole point of the coloured foil on Quality Street was to make them look a festive treat! The matte ones are hopeless. Don't get me started on Roses wrappers

tobee · 24/03/2023 18:57

That seems a bit of an ott thing about the Kit Kat wrappers and then heroin. Although obviously no one uses heroin now....

HelloBunny · 24/03/2023 19:01

Here’s what I bought back then...

Asda Coconut Pineapple Juice
Curry Super Noodles
M&S Butter Tablet bag
M&S Chocolate Layer Bar
Woolworths Pick’n’Mix
M&S Cottage Pie (much saucier)
Original Percy Pigs
Safeway Jam Tarts
Sainsbury’s Mixed Cake Slices
Philleas Fogg Tortillas
PF Mignons Morceaux
Cadbury Roses in a bag
Cadbury Mini Creme Eggs bag
Sainsburys Chicken Tikka Masala
M&S Peach Mousse Desserts
Onken Mousse Pots
Fru Fru (or something!) Mousse
Starbucks Blueberry Muffins
Starbucks Mocha original
Burger King Chicken Royale
Burger King Bean Burger
Debenhams Afternoon Tea

Loads more, I’m sure...

Plastic. I went to find an image and came across this. The original foil was more practical as you could wrap it up as you ate the bar (on the odd occasion you wouldn't eat it all in one sitting!)

Way back in time (early 70's) Woolworths sold loose biscuits, and my favourite was a malted milk half covered with Caramac. Proper Caramac mind, not the thin waxy stuff they sell in Poundland/OneBelow.

Metal foil.

Where is this earthly paradise? Only expensive brands use metal foil here now.
