Shopping in the past

I'd love to go back in time 20/25 years to do my food shop. Not just for the prices but to find:

Sweetener free soft drinks.
Easter Eggs that you crack open to find the chocs inside.
The original lovely cadburys chocolate in purple foil. And kit kits in foil. All chocolate in foil, it just tasted better.
Salt & vinegar crisps that made your eyes water.
Toffee ripple ice cream.

I also miss having camera film processed whilst doing my shopping and excitedly opening the envelope in the car. Definitely rose tinted specs here as I can remember it costing £4/£5 for each film to be processed plus a few quid for the film - and half the photos were crap 😆

Any more?

Probably rose tinted specs again but I remember Supermarket shopping being really pleasant in the 90s.

Those glasses aren't just rose tinted - they're full on opaque barbie pink!

Personally I am willing to sacrifice the look of the netting-wrapped Christmas stockings and similar products in favour of readily recyclable cardboard plastic. I do wish they'd bring back foil wrapping for chocolate though - much more recyclable!

ReformedWaywardTeen · 24/03/2023 15:39

Proper Skips that fizzed on your tongue, not these soggy monstrosities we have now.

And yes to how Cadbury chocolate used to taste before they made it taste of oil and sweetener

Caspianberg · 24/03/2023 15:40

Lindt rabbits are all just foil wrapped for Easter

Dartmoorcheffy · 24/03/2023 15:41

Heinz toast toppers. If I knew they were being discontinued I would have stockpiled them.

Aaron95 · 24/03/2023 15:45

For me it's spending hours browsing through record shops. Discovering a band you had never heard of and taking a chance on buying their album.

That and the thrill of going to the video rental store on a Friday night with friends. We would collectively choose two films to watch and then go home to watch them.

Try Morrison's which has bugles, nik makes, wheat crunchies, Easter eggs with buttons inside and lowicz fruit syrup - pure sugary glop that costs about £1.50 a bottle and can be mixed with fizzy water for the person in your life who doesn't like sweeteners. And there's no sweetener in their own brand regular or reduced sugar ketchup. Can't solve the KitKat problem. I miss them too.

holidaytimeatlast · 24/03/2023 16:11

This independent chocolate shop sells the chunkiest Easter eggs not only with little eggs inside, but also you can have solid chocolate dinosaurs or unicorns or Lego men! I've never known such thick quality chocolate. Make sure you have good teeth! 😆

A lot less artificial sweetener right across the board. Now it feels like I have to check most labels, and certainly ketchup, relish and yoghourt. I can't stand sweeteners.

Specific product: this may still be available, actually, but the shop where I bought it is long gone. Little tubs of Greek yoghourt, Total brand, strawberry flavoured. It was lovely.

Can I recommend the Dr Wills range for ketchup/relish et al.

They use dates for sweetening stuff and the ketchup is a new firm favourite in this house.

Instant whip, especially the butterscotch one. So much nicer than Angel Delight!
DM used to buy something called breakfast slices. Not sure if you can still get them but they were yummy.
Vesta dishes ( although I believe they’re still available)

Going back more like 30 years but. Ice magic the chocolate sauce you poured on ice cream that hardened,no idea why it was discontinued it was lovely .

Thanks. That syrup sounds amazing. I've never heard of it. Off to Morrisons I go then!

I swear you used to be able to get Milk Tray chocs, but in a bar version…no one I know can remember them! I’m sure I didn’t dream it.
It was delish.

Yes you could. They were fab. The lime barrel one in the middle was prone to leaking though, and they were easy to crush, so I think that may be why production ceased.

neitherofthem · 24/03/2023 16:35

Why is it that all the things I can immediately think of are chocolate-related? 😂

Besides chocolate, there's... nope, can't think of anything else!

L3ThirtySeven · 24/03/2023 16:36

Taking 15p to the sweet shop and getting a roll of Polo mints (7p) and a big bag of liquorice cuttings.

SirVixofVixHall · 24/03/2023 16:37

I want the Easter eggs of my childhood, foiled in jewel colours, actual decent chocolate, a selection of chocolates inside, proper satin ribbons and Easter themed boxes. Highlight of my childhood in the 70s was a large cardboard swan with the Easter egg in Prussian Blue foil on its back, all wrapped in a large pink satin ribbon. Happy days.

Thank you! I’ve been accused of fabricating the whole thing 😂

I would very, very, very much like some blue dragon lemon sauce please. I miss it so much!

Instant Whip was disgusting. It had milk powder in it so you just added water. Angel Delight was much nicer.

Anyone remember Kellogg's Rise n Shine? Powdered orange juice you reconstituted with water.

Shekissedagirlandshelikedit · 24/03/2023 16:59

Dh accidentally bought low sugar Angel Delight and it was inedible for me although everyone else liked it. The full fat stuff does have palm oil though.

I don't have a lot of sugary food or drink so I actively look for anything without sweetener as I want it to be a treat and don't like the aftertaste of sweetener.

Everything is just being ruined!

I'd like to go back to early last century and buy an economy ticket for the Titanic.

There's a really irritating person at work whose birthday is coming up soon... 🤐

Lowicz is Polish, so you might find it in the World Foods section. Talking of bubble and squeak; I had a sudden hankering the other day for some of the vacuum packed rosti in a foil sachet. I couldn't find it anywhere, and had to order on-line from a German food company.

BluebellBlueballs · 24/03/2023 17:09

Cereal with toys/ stickers inside ( not for me, for my kids. OK the nostalgia for me).

I still remember the joy at getting stickers inside sugar puffs and completing the set.

I used to use the post service “Truprint” - you got a free film back with your prints. I was remembering that not so long ago, when looking through old photo albums. Ahhh those were the days 😁

Oh the Lime Barrel in Milk Tray was lovely! They should bring that back definitely. And a decent Coffee flavoured one, there’s none in any box now. If you do manage to get anything it’s a ‘cappuccino’ and they’re just so bland, might as well not bother.
