The previous thread filled up fast, so here's another one with a reasonably topical title!

I'm increasingly noticing the BBC reluctance to tackle the government or cover political stories

On policing, the headline says "Government hits 20,000 target" - the article is much more balanced about what that means

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/65377091

Headlines today: Sudan, Ed Sheeran copyright trial, auction of Freddie Mercury's possessions. All interesting stories but where are the big issues that are directly affecting the UK?

Even the politics page is light on government stories. Headline: Migration plans are compassionate, says Braverman. Literally the only mention of the Government.

I used to rely on the BBC for news but they just aren't reporting anything now

Police officers standing in a row in the middle of a road

Government hits 20,000 new police officers pledge

The Conservatives made an election pledge to recruit thousands of police officers.

Deeply troubling rise in dependence on food parcels distributed by food banks in Trussell Trust network. Last year saw 35% increase in food parcels for children to 1.14m, according to ⁦@TrussellTrust⁩. See attached

Yes, I have noticed that as well.

L1ttledrummergirl · 26/04/2023 12:14

Wtf I never thought i would agree with the SNP but no safe and legal routes for Sudanese dc to come to this country at the moment.
Twatak talking about how proud he is of their record.

He's a fuckwit.

DuncinToffee · 26/04/2023 12:37

Sunak is very shouty

I am not watching PMQs but seen a few clips.

(my autocorrect keeps changing shouty to short)

onirgellep · 26/04/2023 13:01

Naughty autocorrect

newnamethanks · 26/04/2023 13:03

Sounds like sentient autocorrect. Agree, regretfully, about BBC news.

Cornettoninja · 26/04/2023 13:58

Meanwhile, here's a Tory leaflet delivered to a strongly Labour voting area in Norwich, telling people 'you don't need to take any ID in order to vote...'

that’s some blatant twatishness (and a less than complimentary view of the electorate)

I run a foodbank
It's bad
Really bad

DuncinToffee · 26/04/2023 14:29

About time
Bridgen has been expelled from the Conservative Party after he compared the covid-19 vaccine to the Holocaust.

LlynTegid · 26/04/2023 14:33

@DuncinToffee Agree, something the Tories have got right.

Notonthestairs · 26/04/2023 15:06

Pincher to stand down at next election - as far as I know he's still under investigation. I wonder if they'll quietly drop that (assume they won't want that raked over again considering how many in HoC knew what had gone on).

Yes, I assume that'll all be swept under the carpet now that he's agreed to go away...

pointythings · 26/04/2023 15:39

@Cornettoninja I think this is a lot more than twattishness. It's a blatant and very stupid attempt at rigging the local election.

Big majority. It’ll be interesting to see what happens in Tamworth.

RafaistheKingofClay · 26/04/2023 15:52

Bridgen however is standing for re-election. Just not for the Tories obviously.

pointythings · 26/04/2023 15:53

@RafaistheKingofClay wouldn't it be nice if he split the Tory vote?

Very interesting thread Duncin.
One giant fudge to save face.

I've absolutely no idea how Braverman thinks she can pretend the last decade of cuts is irrelevant.

God alive, they must think we're stupid. It's a vote catcher before May local elections.
I. Do. Not. Believe. Their. Figures

Trouble is, people will believe it.

And stupid Suella banging on to Susannah about being proud that it will be highest numbers ever... well it could be just one over couldn't it?
And as PPs have said, not experienced police and what about the last 10 years.

I read somewhere that 94% of burglaries across UK are unsolved. Anyone who has been burgled knows how traumatic it is. My DD was burgled... great muddy footprints everywhere, stuff thrown around, she felt awful. Luckily she's over it, but it was horrible. There was just not the manpower for anyone to come out, it was brushed off like it was nothing by the police.

The interesting thing about the leaflet telling voters they don't need 🆔 is that the leaflets originated from Conservative Central office - so either they don't follow their own policies very closely (because let's face it voter fraud is a non problem) or something else.

Notonthestairs · 26/04/2023 16:09

Jenrick AND Braverman telling flat out lies.

"There is no mechanism through with refugees can approach the UNHCR with the intention of seeking asylum in the UK'

@RobertJenrick refuses to correct the record after the @UNHCRUK refutes his claims that Sudan refugees could apply to them for asylum in the UK

It is very strange. Cock up or corruption? Hard to tell, as the Tories are so very expert at both.

Yes they do.
& neither do I.

The sheer quantity of lies told to the public now just seems phenomenal. There doesn't seem to be any break on them.

I don’t know. I think I’d like to see the smug conspiracy theorist get totally annihilated.

He’s a short step away from talking about 5g in parliament. I think that might be worse for uk politics than the Tories.

Notonthestairs · 26/04/2023 16:24

Bloody lefty lawyers at it again. Noticed also the Tory MP nodding along with Cox.

"Former Tory attorney general Sir Geoffrey Cox is not remotely happy about Illegal Migration bill allowing ministers to "deliberately disobey" the UK's international obligations."
