The previous thread filled up fast, so here's another one with a reasonably topical title!

So he Raab thinks its ok to bully in a specific and limited way. Why am I not surprised?

And don't forget where it is reasonable to do so!

I think Raab may be onto something though, an innovative new way to run the Justice system, probably cheaper. One has an investigation, pages and pages of details are put together and then the perpetrator gets to decide whether they are guilty and what their punishment should be.

Is it activist to point out that cutting by 25% the MoJ budget means the justice system isn't really a system any more and no Minister we can't do that because there is no money even to prosecute rapists?

Now you're just using facts to try and malign the government.

We could do away with juries totally. Things would be much simpler. And you wouldn’t need a sentencing hearing which frees up court time and would clear the backlog.

Even better you’d could just ask everyone in the backlog if they think they are guilty and clear it in a day. I’m almost certain this will free up some space in prisons too.

This is genius. I don't know why the government haven't already thought of this. Except there needs to be some kind of way to decide who in the population would get to declare themselves not guilty and who would just get locked up anyway.

Perhaps this is one of the innovations that Raab was trying to introduce that civil servants got in the way off.

I think the answer to who gets to decide on their own guilt is quite easy to determine. Are they friends with a minister? Have they donated?

The government maligns itself everyday. It is one of the things it is very good at.

Fucking hell, some bloke trying to flog his book has just said there is a culture of victimhood in organisations.

Laura Farris has just described Raab as acting with integrity. How low is her bar for integrity?

Are the Tories playing some strange game of dare involving how low can they go?

Cornettoninja · 24/04/2023 12:56

I’ve just caught the radio with shelagh fogerty trailing her show. I didn’t catch the MP’s name but apparently some one has stated regarding Sudan evacuations that ‘if we can’t help them we should tell them now’.

That’s given me cause for concern on multiple levels not least that MP’s have concerns around the governments various facades and capabilities.

Well, there clearly is. The Tory party has a culture of victimhood and they are an organisation so that's all the evidence this bloke needs.

The Tories really are determined to advocate for HoLs reform.

But Jeremy Corbyn.

P.S. I dare you to post that on shall we say a different thread.

L1ttledrummergirl · 24/04/2023 13:28

I'm surprised more people aren't asking questions about Sudan, namely what plans Cleverly has to evacuate uk citizens, and why this wasn't done sooner. The advice to stay indoors and contact your travel provider is a bit shit, and telling people there are currently no plans to help them, and if they try to help themselves and it goes wrong then it's their own fault is outrageous.

Pure incompetence at it's finest which is likely to cost people their lives.

At least we have a really big aircraft carrier with American planes on it.

This won't get reported nearly enough. Utterly dismal.

Notonthestairs · 24/04/2023 13:49

Been off line all morning (thank you Virgin broadband) now catching up.
I don't understand why the UK didn't implement evacuation plans 10 days ago - it seems really shortsighted and chaotic (again).

Listened to this on radio 4 this morning.

Basically it went

"Only advice we can give is to stay indoors"
"Emails aren't getting through because of WiFi cut outs"
"If they want to head to border they will be taken in there"
"But we don't suggest that we suggest staying indoors"
"We don't know if we can get to British nationals"
"We will let a British nationals know if we can can get to them"
"We suggest they don't leave homes"
"If they leave - which some might as they know the area we will protect them"

It was terrifying. Obviously the above is all paraphrased it I basically heard "we don't think we'll get in and rescue them, don't advise trying to leave - but if you do leave we'll help you. But stay indoors".

itsgettingweird · 24/04/2023 13:55

Sorry should say "help you at the border. But you travel at your own risk"

L1ttledrummergirl · 24/04/2023 14:48

Exactly the impression I got. It would be interesting to see what the advice has been, and how it's changed over the last few weeks. Why didn't they get people out sooner?

Meanwhile, here in Sweden we're hearing that Swedish citizens, along with Irish, French, Italian, Spanish German, Belgium etc have all been evacuated with the assistance of the French and Italian military. They spoke with a British guy still trapped who said he'd had the chance to get assistance from the French but instead followed the advice from the British Embassy to stay put. So he missed the bus with the French, the British Embassy staff have since all been evacuated secretly, and now all he can get is a recorded message telling him to stay inside.

DuncinToffee · 24/04/2023 19:19

This is ridiculous

Who the fuck does he think he is? He doesn't like being second fiddle to a king does he?
He can't actually think he should behave like a head of state can he? That would be incredibly stupid and very unprofessional.
Ridiculous man.
