I am disappointed that his defence isn't, "well no one believed what I said anyway so I can't have mislead them". But then Mad Nad and Fabricat seem to believe every word he says, so perhaps they were misled?

I think the simple point is that no government minister, including Johnson himself, would have said publicly at any point in the pandemic that alcohol-fuelled non-socially distanced work gatherings where no work was being done "for morale" were lawful and within guidance
