We don’t have the money or infrastructure to support anyone from Eritrea, Syria or Ethiopia who wants to come here. We simply don’t. We are the most crowded country in Europe bar island/city states and the Netherlands.

Yet we have massive staffing issues in multiple sectors…..

But I suppose that’s the fault of all the benefit claimants who won’t stop chain smoking and watching their sky isn’t it?

IClaudine · 12/03/2023 21:28

How about sorting out our domestic policing and put some effort into not providing such a soft target to sell sex, drugs and slaves to. It’s people living here legitimately providing customer bases

This is such an excellent point.

pointythings · 12/03/2023 21:30

The agenda of those who support this government's horrific immigration bill is to reach a position where the UK accepts zero refugees. Because we're full, innit?

Not gonna happen. This is a ‘Brexit means Brexit’ phrase, meaningless and impossible to implement because it’s meaningless.

We will never stop people wanting to buy sex or drugs. It’s an unpalatable part of the human condition.

I mean, aren’t we? And if not; what makes you think that?

Blossomtoes · 12/03/2023 21:32

I thought this thread was a refuge from all this bollocks. Aren’t there enough others already?

there is a solution. It's a properly funded and staffed asylum seeker that processes applications within appropriate timescales, and it's the provision of routes for claiming asylum from outside the UK. That isn't rocket science

It also isn’t rocket science that it will increase the numbers, and the public don’t want that. And I don’t blame them.

This is the crux of it. Everything else is just smoke and mirrors. You don't want them here full stop.

BewareTheLibrarians · 12/03/2023 21:32

From Simon Jones on Twitter:

“The BBC has contacted the Home Office to object to its use of BBC footage in a video posted on Twitter announcing the new Illegal Migration Bill.
The video begins with clips of presenters from BBC News and 5 News reporting the number of migrants who have crossed the Channel.”

Wheels off, carts everywhere. 🫣

No shit.

Thats exactly the attitude that is attracting criminal gangs here but we can’t do anything about it so, like you say, we should just let them crack on.

Why worry about channel crossings either eh? People are going to people 🤷‍♀️

pointythings · 12/03/2023 21:33

Of course we're not full. Plenty of empty housing in the North - but successive governments (and indeed not just the Tories here) have not done nearly enough to support economic development and have focused exclusively on London and the South.

There's also quite a lot of empty housing in London, just standing there getting pricier and lining the pockets of foreign owners. But that's OK, because they're wealthy.

If we hadn't had 13 years of cuts to education, the NHS and council funds, we would be able to do so much more. There's a reason why those countries who didn't go the austerity route after the crash of 2008 are now doing better economically - austerity doesn't work. We are where we are because of the choices made (largely) by the Tories.

Do you think the U.K. is over crowded? If not; why not?

Have you not noticed that the UK government manages to uncover forests magic money trees when it really needs to? Such as the billions it found to plug the hole that Truss and Kwarteng created?

The reason our infrastructures are on their knees is because of ideologically driven austerity, which even a certain Prime Minister said was a mistake at one point.

pointythings · 12/03/2023 21:36

I don't think the UK is particularly overcrowded at all. We do have a major problem with our demographics - not enough children being born, not enough young people to work and pay tax.

I didn’t say that though, did I?

Go on - tell me your master plan for ending the demand for drugs and sex. Not a single country in the world has managed it 🤷🏼‍♀️

Why are you posting essay questions? How about you post what you think and see where the debate goes?

Fladdermus · 12/03/2023 21:37

Can we have our thread back?

IClaudine · 12/03/2023 21:38

We are not overcrowded. Certain areas of the UK desperately need an influx of younger people.

Cornettoninja · 12/03/2023 21:36

Because I’ve said why I think the U.K. is overcrowded only to be told it definitely isnt (with no explanation beyond that). So I’m asking why.

Legalise and regulate drugs and the sex industry, thus taking them out of the hand of criminal gangs.

I didn’t say I had a master plan though did I? (We can both play that game)

Do you think our police are in a fit state to enforce laws that would deter criminal gangs? If you do; explain.

Do you think any law created to provide boundaries to human nature is pointless and we should therefore give up any attempt to enforce it? If you do; explain.

Moonicorn · 12/03/2023 21:40

I will repeat, we are the most crowded country in Europe bar the Netherlands. We have destroyed natural habitats with cheap housing which is why we have flooding and drainage issues. We cannot farm for ourselves because there is no longer the room and are heavily reliant on imports - fine, until there are serious supply issues like we are seeing at the moment and food becomes wildly expensive. We cannot simply build, and build, and build.

Which police force in the world has managed to eradicate drugs and prostitution? I’m all ears. You’re the one saying it’s possible, I want to know how.

This is an interesting article on comparative population density in Europe.

theconversation.com/think-your-country-is-crowded-these-maps-reveal-the-truth-about-population-density-across-europe-90345

Overcrowding is relative, and high density populations - if amenities are managed well - are not a problem.

pointythings · 12/03/2023 21:43

We can't farm for ourselves in large part because we've chosen not to allow in the people we need to bring in our harvests... We can't farm for ourselves because our government refused to extend its energy subsidies to food producers.

I get that you will say anything not to hold your beloved Conservatives responsible for the consequences of their 13 years in power, and I get that you will say anything not to accept the mpact ofr beloved Brexit, but that doesn't make you right.

I’m a Labour voter and a remainer (or was, now politically homeless).

I just don’t believe we can run a country off inspirational quotes.
