"I feel like it's gone beyond that now. I feel they're no longer terrified because the BBC now is the government."

Yes I can sort of agree. But the veneer of respectability has been a very useful tool disguising a move from public broadcaster to state broadcaster.
It's pretty much out in the open now.

Peston

The PM cannot distance himself from the Lineker impartiality row, because it has become intertwined with the dispute over whether its chair Sharp is sufficiently impartial following the circumstances of his appointment. And only the government can hire or fire a BBC chair

Rishi Sunak assures us he will bring integrity and accountability to government, so presumably he is as we speak preparing the statement that tells us he has fired the BBC chairman and those who took bribes to appoint him.

Don't get your hopes up @jgw1. This just popped up on my phone notifications:-

PM hopes BBC Lineker row "can be resolved in a timely manner" and matter "not for the government"

Oh my god surprise.

Oh my god surprise.

Oh so the PM is keen to continue to demonstrate the Labour narrative that he is weak, fair enough.

DuncinToffee · 11/03/2023 20:40

Sunak embargoed his statement until 6pm. Because he was worried?

Oh my god surprise.

If it’s “not for the government” that explains why my MP leapt on twitter yesterday to denounce Lineker’s comments.

Oh wait. No it doesn’t. 😉

Notonthestairs · 11/03/2023 21:46

No rebuke to this?

"Not only do they want to silence him…

Now 36 Tory MPs are demanding a “full investigation” into his comments and a “full apology”

John Hayes (Bravermans sponsor and the person she leaked the top secret information to for which she was sacked), 30p Lee, Gullis, Swayne etc etc

Notonthestairs · 11/03/2023 21:47

Whoopsie - I think Braverman leaked information to John Hayes wife. Not John Hayes personally.

Because that's better...

I think I am going to retire from the other thread for tonight.

It is as someone else pointed out really quite disturbing how little people are willing to educate themselves.

Sometimes its good to retire from a "healthy debate".

Plus occasionally it's just better to acknowledge that some people aren't arguing in good faith but are fretting about whether their private school fees will go up under a Labour government.

But maybe it's just me thinking that.

pointythings · 11/03/2023 22:45

@jgw I've hidden the other thread. It wasn't doing my emotional wellbeing any good. It just made me feel that the UK is full of really shitty people, and I know they're just a vocal minotiry.

L1ttledrummergirl · 11/03/2023 23:32

Fair play @jgw1. I've just waded through it. I'm impressed you kept going. There will be people who read that thread without comment and looked at those links though so we'll done for persevering.

I'm convinced a fair few of them are not in the UK tbh...

That I suppose is the aim. Those repeatedly posting that asylum seekers are illegal are not going to change their tune, but the more the law is explained the more other people might notice.

You're doing great on there.

I'm so use to your satire - which is brilliant - but your actually also a very good writer when discussing fact too Flowers

Piggywaspushed · 12/03/2023 08:44

There's an actually very amusing thread at the moment about repatriations and foreign aid. It would give you stuff to amuse yourself with jgw before it gets pulled.

Piggywaspushed · 12/03/2023 08:45

DH just watched MOTD. It was surreal. BBC look very very stubborn and very very arrogant.

IClaudine · 12/03/2023 08:49

There were no presenters on the Scottish version of MOTD either.

IClaudine · 12/03/2023 08:51

Hope you had a good night's sleep jgw, you must have been knackered after endlessly trying to explain asylum law to numpties.

Piggywaspushed · 12/03/2023 08:51

I don't have quite so much time today, so must resist being sucked into another thread.

I feel quite refreshed. Thinking one might have educated even a few people is quite rewarding.
