I'm heading to the chippy for tea for me and the kids tonight, what would you like and I'll add it onto my order?

What is bread cake please?
Plaice and chips please, no S&P because I hate soggy chips (will add plenty at home).

@Tarkan where I am, a pizza crunch is a battered, then deep fried pizza. As opposed to the normal deep fried pizza without batter. I’ve got one on the way just now!

Our deep fried pizzas always come with batter. I've never seen one without! I did check a few local places last night to see if anywhere had it as pizza crunch but it's either deep fried pizza or half battered pizza they say.

Enjoy! I'm only slightly jealous. I could have got one last night but I went for the chips, cheese and curry sauce instead. Grin

clipclop5 · 24/02/2023 19:26

Haddock supper, onion rings, mushy peas and onion gravy!

Pedallleur · 24/02/2023 20:05

Not been for a while but the chippy in Great Eccleston near Preston did Cod, Haddock or Hake. Now Hake is expensive but the bar went up on fish and chips when we had that. Fantastic. No wonder there was a queue.

A bread cake is what many of us Northeners call what others call a bread bun or a barn or a roll

BlessedBeTheFruitCake · 24/02/2023 20:13

Saveloy, chips and curry sauce for me thanks.

Blowyourowntrumpet · 24/02/2023 20:14

Chip cob with gravy and a potato fritter

AtleastitsnotMonday · 24/02/2023 21:03

282 responses and 7 pickled gherkins, disgraceful! Please can a few more of you buy one every now and then. I'm worried they will become extinct if no one's buying them. So I'll have two pickled gherkins, a cod and a Rio Light. To be honest I'm not a fan of fish and chips, I don't like the feel of grease on my lips, so I don't actually eat the batter, just the fish. The gherkin is 100 % the best bit!

MiniJellyBeans · 24/02/2023 21:38

My order would always be a Holland's steak pudding, chips, gravy, mushy peas....divine Smile

I asked for a Holland's pudding in a chippy in Edinburgh when I was at uni years ago (not realising it is a regional thing). After some puzzlement on the part of the lady serving, I came out of the chippy with a white pudding. I still don't know what it was but, as an impoverished student, there was no way I wasn't eating it when I'd spent some of my precious grant cheque on it (showing my age there....).

Ha. I had the same shock when I moved down south and the Meat & Potato pie from the chippy wasn't Holland's. I really didn't know that all chippies don't sell Holland's pies.

Bread cake?

Muffin preferably oven bottom. Or a tea cake.

Pickles here are a choice of onion or egg. I've never seen a gherkin at a chippy. That's a McDs thing and I will eat everyone's pickles there.

Deathraystare · 25/02/2023 02:04

@SpringIsSpringing23 . No it isn't but I don't get home until 9pm and find that too late to eat so I got it on the way into Work!

AtleastitsnotMonday · 25/02/2023 08:53

No, chip shop gherkins are whole big ones, nice and crunchy. Nothing like a McDonalds gherkins. I've never been to a chip shop that doesn't have them.

From the chippy?

Yes, we’re northern! Lots of excellent Chinese chippies around here!!

TheBirdintheCave · 25/02/2023 11:00

@VerveClique I haven't found a good equivalent of a Chinese chippy down here yet. Lots of great fish and chip shops (if you ask them to skin the fish before they fry it!) but I really think southerners are missing out on the combo takeaway.

SheeshPawowa · 25/02/2023 12:21

"Crispy chilli chicken, half rice/half chips, portion of veggie spring rolls."

That's not the chippy, even if it's a Chinese chippy. You've chosen Chinese. If someone else that's ordering with you opt for fish, chips and mushy peas they've chosen a chippy.

The question was 'What is your order from the chippy?' That person answered according to what the word chippy means to them. It's not wrong 🤷🏻‍♀️

SheeshPawowa · 25/02/2023 13:09

It is 👍

The chippy hill is the one I will die on.

I am sitting at the back of our chippy in the South and we definitely sell gherkins as well as onions and eggs. Probably sell a dozen gherkins a night.

And we can do scraps if asked, or scrumps, or batter bits or anything anyone chooses to call them, we don’t even charge for them.

AngeloMysterioso · 25/02/2023 20:58

Half a portion of chips, 2 battered sausages and some curry sauce please and thank you Smile

ChicagoBears · 25/02/2023 21:01

Me and OH normally split abs have:

large chips, fish and a sausage. Lush!

Cosycover · 25/02/2023 23:06

Chinese chippy?

So its a chinese takeaway? What makes it a chippy?

VerveClique · 26/02/2023 13:49

Most of the chippies around and about where I live are Chinese chippies.

So they do a full Chinese takeaway menu alongside a full ‘authentic’ fish and chip menu.

Mix it up if you wish.

That’s what the chippy means to me anyway!!

When I lived in another part of the country for a few years I was surprised that not all chippies were Chinese chippies. I guess it depends what you’re used to.

They do Chinese food and fish and chips equally as well.
