I'm heading to the chippy for tea for me and the kids tonight, what would you like and I'll add it onto my order?

Oooh pattie, chips and scraps please. Yum!

Rebel2 · 23/02/2023 22:44

I'm going to try this place so here's the menu

That is one poshass chippy! In my local you are literally getting whatever can be deep fried. Nothing weird or tantalising at all. Ye might be lucky to get a doner kebab but aside from that its cod, smoked cod, chips and the odd sausage and burger. That is a gourmet chipper to me!

Pseudonamed · 23/02/2023 22:48

Actually I have changed my order to a smoked cod with potato cakes now and a tub of curry sauce.

Rebel2 · 23/02/2023 22:49

@Pseudonamed Grin
I usually go to the cheap chippy and pay about £5 for sausage chips curry and scraps. It's cheap and good

But this new one has opened, there has been UPROAR and mutterings about the prices, but great reviews so I figured it's pay day....
huge portions and all homemade too even the pies

OhYouBadBadKitten · 23/02/2023 22:49

Small cod and chips with scraps, lots of s&v, curry sauce and mushy peas please.

pigsinoodies · 23/02/2023 22:51

I've never seen a potato cake in a chippy. Are they just the same as the potato cakes from Tesco or something different? Fried, just heated up, what?

And why aren't black puddings a chippy thing?

UrsulaPandress · 23/02/2023 23:02

Omg. Only read the first few replies as I’ve been out out.

But I think there is a massive misunderstanding of a chippy tea. And I am speaking from the home of the first chippy (although it may have been tripe).

Any road, my order is a fish and a large mushy peas.

Black puddings are a chippy thing where I am. Our local has a "pudding" section and you can have white pudding, red pudding, black pudding, haggis or spicy haggis.

pigsinoodies · 23/02/2023 23:08

I love Irish white pudding. Never liked Scottish white pudding though.

What's red pudding?

Spicy Haggis sounds fantastic. I can remember drunken conversations about how you could have curried haggis, Moroccan haggis etc. The texture and taste just lends itself to foreign spiciness. What's 'spicy haggis' like then?

TheDogthatDug · 23/02/2023 23:14

@Greensleeves

I'll go for the same as you- babby'syead

Its basically a scallop but where I am we call them cakes:

White pudding in a chipper??? I may die of shock. Only ever have it with eggs on a fry.

TheDogthatDug · 23/02/2023 23:18

Ooh what I wouldn't give now for a chip butty made from dirty white bread and butter. When the hot chips melt the butter...

Red pudding is more like a sort of meat sausage in taste but it's got the other filler stuff like you get in puddings. My ex used to always order it so it's a long time since I've actually eaten one. It's only really found in the east of Scotland. I'm from the west and had never heard of it until I met my ex.

I've never actually had the spicy haggis. I'll have to try it sometime. I love spicy fish (from a different chippy in town) and it's just normal fish with a spicy batter but I don't know if that's what they do to the haggis or not. I'm terrible at just sticking to the couple of things I like and not trying anything new though. Blush

And I've only ever had it battered and deep fried from the chippy. Grin I haven't had one in ages though, our local place is very hit or miss with them and they can come out way too greasy which isn't nice. I'll still get them if we go elsewhere though.

TheDogthatDug · 23/02/2023 23:23

Alternatively I would go for chips and a Wigan kebab. A Wigan kebab is a buttered barm with a pie for the filling.

I am going around every chipper in Ireland tomorrow to tell them about this delicacy they need to be deep frying 😁

That makes sense. A potato cake is completely different to me. But then scallops are really something different to what they are in the local chippies.

That red pudding sounds like the 'veggie' roll they sell in NI but it is made of beef. I always laugh at that because you get it at a breakfast buffet and it says 'veggie roll' and if you were not native and veggie you might give it a go but tis meat. False advertising really.

pigsinoodies · 23/02/2023 23:28

Where/what is a deep fried pizza?????

It's exactly what it sounds like. Half a cheap cheese pizza, battered and deep fried. It's the most amazing and disgusting thing at the same time. Grin

Looks pretty much like these pics.

Also called a pizza crunch, only in Scotland 😁

This is the red pudding. They do sound similar and I would love to know how many times the veggie roll has caught people out!

I'm in Scotland too and I've honestly only ever seen it called a deep fried pizza. I found out tonight our local one does a whole one as well as the half one I usually get. It's cheaper than ordering a normal pizza from them though. Grin
