For me it's Celine Dion - Think Twice. Don't know what it is about that song but even as a fairly young child it always got me!

Wires by athlete

Oh yes my DH played this when DS1 was a newborn and told me what it was about. I sobbed for about an hour! Haven't listened to it since!

I agree with Dance With My Father, it's a very touching song .

Terry Jack's Season in the sun gets me as itcwas in the charts when a school friend was killed by a hit and run driver outside our primary school .
I dudnt make the connection when I was a kid but I heard it on the radio many years later and the memory of the accident and the school assembly the day after came flooding back out of no where .

How strange and so sad. I came on to say Seasons in the Sun, for a similar reason. It was in the charts when I was in junior school too. The brother of a boy who was in our class, he was in the year above us, was killed climbing a pylon.
It affected the whole school. I hadn't realised until recently that this song was No 1 at the time.

Johnny and Mary by Robert Palmer. I borrowed the Lookin for Clues album off my brother when I was about 15, 1980ish. My brother was older and died in 2013. I always cry when I hear it.

Forbidden Colours - David Sylvian. No reason, but it's so haunting. Always has me bawling if I listen to it.

Oh blimey so many! I cry so easily! Another vote for “ Slipping Through My Fingers”. I wish DD14 was still little 😢

And 'Stay With Me Till Dawn' by Judy Tzuke.

Lot's of Jude's songs make me cry. I love her. The one she wrote when her mother died is heartbreaking.

No-one looks at me, how they looked at me.
No-one talks to me, how they talked to me.
And it feels so strange, now that we are three.
Nothing is the same as it used to be.
And I'm frightened too,
That you might not see.
I'm still a child,
Though a child is growing in me.
Have I lost her now to a better place?
Will I see her smile, on my baby's face?
Can I live my life, with her style and grace?
Can I take the role, fill the empty space?
And I'm frightened too,
That I might not be.
All that her dreams
Said a daughter of hers would be.
Mother, maman, mama, mother
Mother, maman, mama, mother
Mother, maman, mama, mother
Mother, maman, mama, mother
I'm frightened too,
Mother.

Loads, I'm a weeper!

At the moment it's definitely how do I say goodbye by Dean Lewis. My dad has dementia and it hit hard.

Also human by Christina Perri. In fact a lot of her songs.

Smallorangecat · 23/02/2023 10:33

This question comes up on MN from time to time. One day someone posted a. YouTube link to The Night Will Always Win by Elbow. That made me cry.

Also, the songs of my grief since DH died:
Folding Stars - Biffy Clyro
For Good from the Wicked musical
Someone You Loved - Lewis Capaldi
Wave Across the Bay - Frank Turner
Into My Arms -Nick Cave

And Machines by Biffy Clyro for the tiny glimmer of hope in my darkness. And just about every Frightened Rabbit song. I love Frightened Rabbit but the songs make me cry all the time.

RedRosie · 23/02/2023 10:43

Johnny Cash doing "Hurt".

I was playing it (badly) on the piano the other day, and managed to upset myself. So bleak.

Zipps · 23/02/2023 10:58

East 17- Stay another day
Maroon- 5 Memories

Not my usual genre's, basically grief counseling.

Tulips365 · 23/02/2023 11:30

You (or With You....) from the show Ghost. Never seen the show, only the film, but the lyrics always really pull at my heart strings.

Also, Used to be Mine, from the show Waitress. Again, not seen the show, but it reminds me so much of a very special person in my life and always brings a tear to my eye makes me properly sob

LakeTiticaca · 23/02/2023 11:39

The Seekers: Morning town ride.
Reminds me of when I was 5 and all was well xx

CatJumperTwat · 23/02/2023 11:40

Stay by Sugaland. She sings with real emotion.

Clawdy · 23/02/2023 12:03

Another vote for Slipping Through My Fingers.
Time To Say Goodbye.

And for some reason the other day I got tearful listening to the last verses of Macarthur Park.

Bright eyes - Simon and Garfunkel
Just the association with Watership Down sets me off.

Yes! Gets me every time!

Forgot about Everybody’s Changing by Keane. Reminds me of how I felt when I was grown up and had left home and school was turning into a distant memory 🥺

DesignforLife · 23/02/2023 12:17

Wintersong - Sarah McLachlan. It's devastating.

Arsewangry · 23/02/2023 12:22

Bit of a cliche but righteous brothers unchained melody and elvis presley for the good times, both chosen for my dad's funeral.

SheBangsTheDrumsSR · 23/02/2023 12:27

This Mortal Coil - Song To The Siren

ZittiEBuoni · 23/02/2023 12:29

There are loads. I rarely cry in RL so I think songs bring out the emotion that has been repressed.

This morning it was 'The Lads In Their Hundreds', a setting by George Butterworth of one of the poems in 'A Shropshire Lad'. Makes me think of boys going off to WW1 and never coming back.

elm26 · 23/02/2023 12:37

When we were young by Adele - my Nan loved Adele and lost my Gramps in their early 60s. She used to say this reminded her of him, she died suddenly 3 years after he passed and I chose this for her funeral.

Wings by Birdy (acoustic version) - makes me think of the babies DH and I have lost

nofluffsgiven · 23/02/2023 12:45

Days - The kinks
Makes me cry every time because it always makes me think of my grandmother and how special she was to me when I was a child.

nailsathome · 23/02/2023 12:47

Small bump by Ed Sheeran. Even typing that has set me off over my 4 lost bumps

samsmum2 · 23/02/2023 12:52

Many of horror - Biffy Clyro

Imnoonesfool · 23/02/2023 12:54

Everybody’s Changing by Keene
my dear friends brother had a mental health crisis, out of the blue over a period of few days which resulted in him tragically passing away. This came on the radio the morning it happened, as it was out at the time, and the lyrics just hit me. It still does today

I think you and I have the same sad playlist. NIck Cave Into my Arms makes me weep. I also find James Blunt's voice utterly heartbreaking. Goodbye my Lover had me in tears during a work shift when I was going through a break up in my 20's and now every time i hear it I cry for that wee girl standing in the kitchen at work devastated .... and Monsters is a beautiful beautiful beautiful song to his dying dad. It utterly destroys me.

I've have real issues with bottling up emotions and not letting people see me cry, so when I'm having a shitty time, I find weeping along to music really helps me to release my sadness.

Nightynightnight · 23/02/2023 13:06

and @Smallorangecat I'm so sorry for your loss Flowers

Bumply · 23/02/2023 13:17

Sting 'Shape of my heart' particularly in YouTube with scenes from the film Leon.

I'm not really sure why it triggers me other than the film was from a happy time in my relationship before things went tits up.
