(www.washingtonpost.com/world/2023/03/16/drone-russian-jets-black-sea-history-collisions-closecalls/?utm_campaign=wp_main&utm_medium=social&utm_source=telegram)The forcing down of a U.S. drone by Russian fighter jets over the Black Sea on Tuesday spiraled into a diplomatic incident and fueled concern about the potential for the war in Ukraine to escalate into direct conflict between the two superpowers.

The incident also shone light on a fact of geopolitics that often receives little attention: Close calls, some harrowing, between U.S. and Russian aircraft aren’t unusual.

The United States and NATO allies often intercept Russian jets flying close to Alaska or to NATO airspace above the Black or Baltic seas. Russia also has intercepted American aircraft in those regions, sometimes swooping close enough to cause turbulence.

I think there's 2 options with the supposed video of Putin in Mariupol.

A) He didn't go and its all some sort of staged stunt double weird thing

B) He did go, possibly as a fuck you to the arrest warrant. A sort of 'I'll do what I want and go where I like, nobody tells me what to do, I'm even brazen enough to go to Ukraine'

I reckon it's A though, he's like a keyboard warrior, happy to throw stones, or bombshell sadly in this case from afar.

Russians are attacking Bakhmut by inertia, suffering huge losses - Ukrainian Armed Forces General Staff
"They are currently tactically unable to complete the operation to capture the Ukrainian district center of Bakhmut. Yes, there are very active battles there, they still continue to carry out several dozen attacks by inertia, but they suffer huge losses.
Our command and staff are planning the defense correctly. Thanks to the wisdom, purposefulness, and unconventional actions of our commanders and military, they are able to bleed the enemy out and break his morale."

Putin answered the question of why he did not start a full-scale war in Ukraine back in 2014 during the occupation of Donbas:
"We proceeded from the assumption that we would be able to resolve all issues by absolutely peaceful means... Secondly, this also applies to our readiness for some more serious actions than the actions within the framework of the so-called "Crimean Spring."

If Putin goes ahead with the S African visit this could be interesting as it's a signature country to the ICC.

Again a high level US official, Kirby, has emphasised that the US is sending a lot of equipment to help Ukraine in the coming weeks.

Analysis: 20 years later, U.S. invasion of Iraq hangs over war in Ukraine

For months, U.S. and European officials have cast the conflict in Ukraine in stark moral terms. If Putin can succeed with a war of aggression across his borders, the argument has gone, then a dark agenda of territorial conquest and might making right wins out. President Biden has framed the contest as a clash between β€œall democracies” and Putin’s authoritarian project. Last November, U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin described the collective efforts of Ukraine’s Western allies as a reflection of β€œhow much countries around the world value and respect the rules-based international order.”
The legacy of Iraq undermines this rhetoric. For many people in the Middle East and elsewhere in the global South, the U.S. invasion is the most glaring recent episode in a long history of Western meddling and U.S. hypocrisy on the world stage.

Ukraine demoted commander who gave interview about ill-trained troops

(www.washingtonpost.com/world/2023/03/16/ukraine-commander-demoted-interview-pessimism/?utm_campaign=wp_main&utm_medium=social&utm_source=telegram)KYIV, Ukraine β€” A Ukrainian battalion commander who gave an interview to The Washington Post describing how ill-trained troops were weakening Ukraine’s position on the battlefield quit his post this week, after his superiors demoted him because of his remarks, he said.

The commander, a lieutenant colonel who goes by the call sign Kupol, served in the 46th Air Assault Brigade. He declined to provide further details or to grant another interview.

He said that he decided to speak out, despite the risks, hoping the United States would ensure better training for Ukrainian soldiers, including some who have gone into battle without knowing how to throw a grenade or handle their weapons. Some abandoned their positions while under Russian fire, he said in the interview.

Ukrainian military and government officials did not immediately respond on Thursday evening to request from The Post for comment on Kupol’s status.

maidan.org.ua/en/2023/02/glen-grant-2023-a-time-and-chance-for-military-change-in-ukraine/

It's a bit of a glass-half-empty point of view. Some of the UAF's senior officers still cling to a Soviet-era, centralized command doctrine. Yes, infantry in the field should always have everything they need, etc.

The good news is that most of the younger officers have adopted an independent action, take the initiative, Nato style mindset. Their infantry is now using Nato standard weapons far superior to what the Russians have.

You go to war with the army you have, not the army you want. The bigger picture is that the Russians are five feet tall, not ten, and they've achieved none of their strategic goals a year in.

I think this was written for an internal audience within Ukraine to advocate for changes internally, not an indictment of the UAF.
