Shoigu has presented an award (presumably for incompetence) to the pilots of the SU-27 plane involved in the Black Sea drone incident this week. - you honestly couldn't make it up!

Ah but you can ...πŸ˜‰may I refer you to my post of 11:52 yesterday (16th March)..πŸ˜„πŸ˜„

Only remaining question is will the subsequent visit to a salt mine be part of the whole package.

FWIW I would be very interested in seeing see some images of the damage to that fighter....

πŸ‡¦πŸ‡Ή Austria has become the 33rd country to join the creation of a special tribunal for Russia. (Ironic since they seem to be distinctly unsupportive of Ukraine)

Bild: On the eve of the Russian invasion, the Ukrainian Mriya plane was supposed to be flown to the German city of Leipzig. We had been arranging this for several weeks and scheduled the flight for February 25.
The German airport had already prepared everything a month before the invasion. Parking spaces for Ukrainian aircraft had been ready since January 26, 2022. The crew and pilots were sitting in a fully fueled plane the night before the war began, but, according to Captain Dmytro Antonov, they were not allowed to take off on the instructions of their superiors.

Russia will fire missiles once a month or less, - a representative of the GUR.
Russian production does not cover all the costs of their army. That's why last time they fired about 30 cruise missiles, which is the number of missiles Russia can produce in a month. So everything that comes off the assembly line is used for strikes.

Chinese leader Xi Jinping is coming to Russia. The Kremlin said he will hold talks with Putin on March 20-22.

πŸ‡¨πŸ‡In neutral Switzerland, attitudes toward the North Atlantic Alliance have changed since the outbreak of Russia's war against Ukraine. A survey commissioned by the Swiss Ministry of Defense has revealed for the first time that the majority of the country's population is in favor of rapprochement with NATO.
A year earlier, 45 percent of the Swiss held this position, while now it is 55 percent. 53 percent of respondents believe that their country's neutral status allows them to plan their defense jointly with NATO. At the same time, two-thirds of the Swiss oppose their country's accession to the North Atlantic Alliance. ReleaseTheDucksOfWar · 17/03/2023 10:55

The battle between Prigozhin and the Kremlin is getting worse. The ISW think that the reported plan by Patrushev and Putin himself is a fabrication, but the fact that Prigozhin mentions Putin here indicates the rift is deep and Prigozhin is starting to take aim at Putin himself.

It's clear that the clock is ticking for the Ukrainian counteroffensive to begin, from Austin's comments that training and deliveries are being carried out as fast as possible.

Interesting news that Turkiye will no longer maintain or refuel Russian and Belorussian aircraft. That might be inconvenient. A lot of Russians travel to Turkiya.

Whilst I agree I also see this as a fairly tame response from the Kremlin, no suggestion that they consider it a major escalation (not that we should care what they say).

The International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The ICC alleges he is responsible for war crimes, including the unlawful deportation of children from Ukraine to Russia.

It says the crimes were committed in Ukraine from 24 February 2022 - when Russia launched its full-scale invasion.

Moscow has denied allegations of war crimes during the invasion.

I do wonder what it means for him travelling though. Wasn’t he due to travel for the G20 (perhaps). Guess it’ll depend on where he’s going and whether it recognises the jurisdiction of the ICC.

Fladdermus · 17/03/2023 16:35

How does it work with diplomatic immunity? Is it different because it's the ICC rather than another country?

Igotjelly · 17/03/2023 16:56

My understanding is that no head of state has diplomatic immunity from an ICC warrant.

Igotjelly · 17/03/2023 16:58

I seem to think, and a brief Google, tells me it’s Article 27 of the Rome Treaty.

The first cohort of Ukrainian armor troops has completed tank school in Germany.

Ukrainian military complete training on Leopard 2 tanks in Germany

There will be more to follow I'm sure, as they'll need replacements when they're rotated out. No doubt the first wave of Bradley IFV training is wrapping up as well. And speaking of the Bradleys, keep this in mind when you see them in action in the upcoming offensive.
