The question is, how much clout does the drunken, ludicrous Medvedev actually have? It is so hard to take him seriously.

ReleaseTheDucksOfWar · 24/03/2023 17:35

he been ingesting stuff he shouldn't again?

There are some interesting little events recently.

Girkin of MH17 infamy attacked Putin directly, using the word 'shame' and calling the whole "SMO" a criminal act and that every RF soldier is nothing but a criminal.

Armenia has acknowledged it is a signatory to the ICC. It is also a member of the 6-nation defensive treaty with Russia and has said it realises it has obligations under the ICC, meaning that Putin could be arrested if he goes there. There are indications that it, like Kazakhstan, is showing signs of independence from Russia.

China and Russia signed agreements but these seem far more beneficial for China than for Putin and trade between them will be in Yuan as well as roubles. Putin was pushing to be paid in roubles for all gas and oil etc, a year ago.

Putin visited Mariupol - the notoriously paranoid, afraid-of-anyone-close, travel only in a motorcade Putin. This seems something of a desperation measure.

Prigozhin says that he doubts there are Nazis in Ukraine. This goes directly against the propaganda of years.

When you look at the sum total of these incidents, I wonder if Putin is losing his tight grip on control of Russia?

Russia (Medvedev) makes direct threat to use nukes against Ukraine if they attempt to retake Crimea.

https://marcusoscarsson.se/ryssland-konkret-hot-utfardat-mot-ukraina/?fbclid=IwAR3D6wjrgmL9BdvKnPJ_3usMmfz8WkrcWaRw7_p2SIDSf9r23ByIu9qrq2M

The Ukrainians are not going to attack Crimea head-on. They'll drive south to the Sea of Azov, cut the land bridge from Russia to Crimea, and starve out the Russian troops there while continuing to attack them with drones and the GLSDBs if they get them in time. The Kerch bridge has only one rail track open and the truck traffic they can get over the bridge isn't sufficient to supply their forces and the civilian population. They may also have a plan for attacking the bridge again, but as Sun Tzu said, always leave the enemy a way to retreat.

They used a similar strategy in Kherson quite successfully.

MissConductUS · 24/03/2023 19:43

A far greater military mind than my own has laid out how Ukraine should retake Crimea.

Ukraine’s Road to Victory Runs Through Crimea

And no, I don't think the Russians will use nukes if they try this. They're no using them now with the UAF attacking other "Russian" territories.

Key Takeaways

Prominent voices in the Russian information space are increasingly setting information conditions to prepare for a potential Ukrainian counteroffensive.

Crimean occupation head Sergey Aksyonov has reportedly formed a Wagner Group-affiliated private military company (PMC) in occupied Crimea.

Some prominent Russian milbloggers criticized the Russian military command for continuing to impale Russian forces on Vuhledar with ineffective human-wave style frontal assaults.

Russian President Vladimir Putin held a meeting with the Russian Security Council likely as part of his effort to portray himself as a present and effective wartime leader.

Russian forces conducted limited attacks along the Kupyansk-Svatove-Kreminna line.

Russian forces have made gains in and around Bakhmut and conducted ground attacks in the Avdiivka-Donetsk City area.

The Ukrainian General Staff corrected its March 23 statement that Russian forces withdrew from Nova Kakhovka, occupied Kherson Oblast.

Russian occupation authorities announced the creation of a pro-Russian militaristic youth movement aimed at brainwashing children.

The Russian government is adopting new measures to revitalize and eliminate corruption, lethargy, and resistance in Russia’s defense industrial base (DIB).

The United Kingdom Ministry of Defense (UK MoD) reported on March 24 that at least 1,000 Russian personnel training at the 230th Combined Arms Obuz-Lesnovsky Training Ground in Brest, Belarus, redeployed to Russia.

Note: "The Russian 155th Naval Infantry Brigade has been destroyed and reconstituted as many as eight times since the start of the war in large part due losses sustained during the prolonged effort against Vuhledar"

People keep saying that Wagner is losing its influence within Russia. It may be losing its overt influence but it seems that there is still a lot of support for it and it's got these Youth Centres throughout Russia. Prigozhin is a total survivor and I wonder if this weakening of his position is only temporary.

The Armenian ruling that Putin can be arrested on its soil is really big to my mind. Russia is proud of the CTSO and values it. To be in the position where the head of the CTSO can be arrested if he visits one of the lesser members is shocking and shows that Putin is no longer untouchable even in the countries he thought he was effectively in charge of.

Interesting news that Russian occupiers in Crimean are moving their families away and selling their property. I wonder how much property prices have dropped.

The Russian assault on Avdiivka, which was called the new Bakhmut, seems to be struggling.

A UN report documents serious abuses against both Ukrainian and Russia POWs. It's not a surprise that some Ukrainians too commit abuses, but I hope the authorities can root them out fast. At least the UN is even handed in its criticisms, which avoids the great rejoicing among Russia-supporters when Amnesty published its report critical of Ukraine.

Zelenskyy said the counteroffensive can't begin yet because of the lack of heavy equipment and fighter planes. I hope they are on their way.

China's claims that it wants to be a mediator are pathetic, since apparently it hasn't even tried to contact Ukraine.

Being slightly pedantic I'd be asking: GPS only or generic GNSS?

GPS is specifically the US satellite system, Russia have their own in GLONASS (which is rumoured to be becoming degraded), China and Europe also have their own systems which may or may not be available with high accuracy to the Russians. GNSS means equipment can access several of the above.

The US gov promised years ago to avoid using a feature of GPS that would deny high accuracy availability to all but some users on a selected basis.

It would be a bit of a shame if the Russians really have gone GPS only, rather then full GNSS and then POTUS breaks a promise and orders the switch to be thrown...🀐

ReleaseTheDucksOfWar · 25/03/2023 14:11

Wouldn't know, @notimagain Wonder if the Defense INdustry journal would know, too. But lets hope they did go GPS :)

Heard that the Russians have been known to run interference on GPS regularly so presumably they do have another system so their own pilots don't get confused. That's guesswork though.

notimagain · 25/03/2023 14:57

@ReleaseTheDucksOfWar

Heard that the Russians have been known to run interference on GPS regularly so presumably they do have another system so their own pilots don't get confused. That's guesswork though.

They certainly do, in the civil aviation world in the last decade we saw GPS interference/denial frequently over the north eastern Mediterranean (the area north and east of Cyprus), thought to be associated with operations in Syria.

It didn't mean aircraft got lost (as you suspect other systems were available) but it could degrade navigation accuracy to the point that you maybe couldn't fly some poor weather instrument approaches that relied on GPS/GNSS into places like Tel Aviv.

ReleaseTheDucksOfWar · 25/03/2023 15:02

I believe it also happened in Northern Scandanaia too?? not sure about that.

ReleaseTheDucksOfWar · 25/03/2023 15:02

Does the US have a secondary system or access to an alternate system so that fighter pilots can still navigate in the case that GPS is too degraded?

notimagain · 25/03/2023 15:47

ReleaseTheDucksOfWar · 25/03/2023 15:02

Does the US have a secondary system or access to an alternate system so that fighter pilots can still navigate in the case that GPS is too degraded?

The usual fallback (civil and military) is a system called Inertial Navigation (INS) which doesn't need external input from things satellites or ground based radio beacons to continue working.

The problem with INS is that if it's not being updated by radio/GPS or other means the accuracy starts to degrade, getting worse over time over time.

ReleaseTheDucksOfWar · 25/03/2023 15:58

So it's a good temporary fix but a bad long term one.

Again one is reminded of how endlessly aggressive Russia is - unless other countries also play this game?

notimagain · 25/03/2023 16:12

So it's a good temporary fix but a bad long term one.

You could (?can) update some old inertial military systems in flight to remove drift using on-board radar or even flying over a known point on the ground and referencing the system to that feature to remove any errors.

FWIW twenty'ish years back, before the days of GPS we'd cross the Atlantic, navigating by Inertial only for maybe 3 hours and be within a mile or two of where we should have been when we got to the far side.

At a guess modern inertial systems would hopefully be be good enough to put something overhead a city block/large car park/ most certainly an airfield even if not updated for an hour or two, but you'd lose the ability to be accurate enough to easily something through a window or drop a specific span on a bridgeπŸ€”

ReleaseTheDucksOfWar · 25/03/2023 16:21

..or even flying over a known point on the ground and referencing the system to that feature..

as long as there's no cloud cover ...it all sounds a bit challenging. Keeps things lively I suppose.
