I do.

Was he heard speaking live? It would be harder to fake his voice though I suppose the video could have been manipulated with a voiceover.

Simple question, can anyone be sure he even went to Mariupol? and not some where else.

www.understandingwar.org/backgrounder/russian-offensive-campaign-update-march-19-2023

ISW is publishing an abbreviated campaign update today, March 19. This report discusses growing Russian concern about a prospective Ukrainian counteroffensive near Bakhmut or in southern Ukraine, and Russian efforts to prepare mitigations for these claimed efforts.

Key inflections in ongoing military operations on March 19:

Russian forces continued limited offensive operations along the Kupyansk-Svatove-Kreminna line.[28]

Russian forces likely secured marginal gains near Bohdanivka (6km northwest of Bakhmut) amidst continued Russian offensive operations in and around Bakhmut.[29]

Russian forces continued offensive operations along the outskirts of Donetsk City and may have advanced towards Berdychi, about 10km northwest of Avdiivka.[30]

Russian forces continued erecting defensive fortifications throughout southern Ukraine.[31]

Unknown actors killed a Russian occupation Ministry of Internal Affairs Patrol Service platoon commander with a car bomb in occupied Kherson Oblast.[32] Ukrainian media hypothesized that the attack may have been a partisan attack or a result of Russian infighting.[33]

Russian federal communication supervisor Roskomnadzor blocked a website that helped Russians escape mobilization in continued crackdowns against resistance to mobilization.[34]

From the main text: Geolocated footage published on March 19 indicates that Ukrainian forces conducted a successful counterattack southwest of Ivanivske (6km west of Bakhmut) and pushed Russian forces further away from the T0504 highway in the area.

Also: Girkin’s [highly sarcastic commentary on the Ru leadership] may indicate that there are considerable tensions between the Russian military command and the FSB, as well as within the FSB itself. Girkin’s acerbic commentary continues to provide insight into growing inner circle frictions.

i don’t know how to explain this. It’s like he went there to GLOAT. And even if it was not really him, but a double, it doesn’t change the fact that his PR machine intended to make people believe that he went there. To what end, why? I don’t how thick his skin would have to be to look those people in the eye after the horrors he unleashed.

if anything I do doubt the β€œcrowds” and people he spoke to. Those I believe to be actors, not real Mariupol citizens.

either way the whole thing just makes me sick to my stomach.

Xi Jinping to test limits of friendship with Vladimir Putin on Russia state visit
China’s president wants to assert peacemaking credentials and stabilise relations with Europe

Days after Vladimir Putin was hit with an international warrant for alleged war crimes in Ukraine, Xi Jinping’s first state visit to Moscow in four years is a demonstration of the Chinese leader’s commitment to Russia’s president β€” but is also set to show the red lines in what the pair last year dubbed a β€œno limits partnership”.
Putin, who defiantly travelled to occupied Ukrainian territory at the weekend after the International Criminal Court warrant, will hope that Xi’s three-day visit, which began on Monday, will lend legitimacy to his invasion of Ukraine and that China might pledge material support to help his military fight it.
But there are signs that Xi will remain guarded over the potential costs of friendship with Russia’s leader, particularly in Europe as Beijing tries to boost trade after its zero-Covid policy savaged its economy last year. And despite warnings from the US that China was considering sending arms to Russia, there is as yet little evidence of substantial flows of weapons between the two countries.
After his trip to Moscow Xi may call Putin’s nemesis, Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy, according to one person familiar with the matter. It would be Xi’s first direct contact with Zelenskyy since the full-scale invasion and a sign of the constraints China sees on its alliance with Russia, at a time when Beijing wants to assert credentials as a potential peacemaker.
β€œI think he will do the call,” said Yu Jie, a senior research fellow on China in the Asia-Pacific Programme at Chatham House. β€œChina simply cannot afford to become a rival of both the US and Europe.”
Dmitry Peskov, Putin’s spokesman, said Putin and Xi would β€œinevitably” discuss China’s peace plan both during informal one-on-one talks on Monday and formal negotiations on Tuesday.
Putin plans to give Xi β€œexhaustive explanations so that chairman Xi can get a view of the current moment from the Russian side from the horse’s mouth,” Peskov told reporters in an apparent reference to the leaders’ last meeting in September, when China admitted they had differences about the Ukraine conflict. Back then, Putin told Xi that β€œwe understand your questions and concerns about this” and promised to β€œexplain our position.”
Beijing’s close ties with Moscow despite the war, which analysts have dubbed β€œpro-Russia neutrality”, are damaging its standing in Europe. While China’s position paper last month on a potential settlement in Ukraine was met with scepticism in the west, it is a way for Beijing to reposition itself and see how the conflict evolves, analysts say.
The challenge for Xi is to strike a balance between those concerns and the benefits of closer ties to Moscow at a time of mounting tension with the US and its allies.
β€œThe Ukraine war has intensified the great power rivalry and made the geopolitical faultlines between the US and China even more pronounced, and in response China and Russia are now really consolidating their alignment,” said Alexander Korolev, an expert on China-Russia relations at the University of New South Wales in Sydney.
β€œChina will need Russia for its impending confrontation with the US, which is becoming very real,” he added, pointing to closer military relations between the two countries and Beijing’s need to prepare alternative energy supply routes in case seaborne oil imports from the Middle East were blocked in any clash with the US over Taiwan.
As Europe and the US have imposed harsh sanctions on Russia, China’s trade with its neighbour has soared over the past year, jumping 34.3 per cent to a record Rmb1.28tn ($186bn), according to Chinese state-controlled media. This year, natural gas imports from Russia are expected to rise by a third.
Trade with Beijing has given Russia an economic lifeline, making up for some lost oil sales to the US and Europe and supplying replacements for crucial western-made components such as microchips, 5G equipment and industrial machinery.
β€œ[The Chinese] understand that this is a very beneficial moment for them to get Russia deeper in their pocket. They have a tremendous amount of leverage,” said Alexander Gabuev, a senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.
Putin’s framing of the war as part of a broader conflict with the west has drawn the two countries closer. Russia is a useful partner in China’s efforts to push back against the US β€œhegemon”, analysts say. Russia’s powerful security council secretary Nikolai Patrushev gave full-throated backing for Beijing’s stance on Taiwan when he meet China’s top diplomat Wang Yi last month.
Recommended
Ahead of the trip on Monday, the Chinese and Russian leaders released long statements extolling their relationship. Xi said China had all along been β€œimpartial” on what he called the β€œUkraine crisis”, while lashing at β€œdamaging acts of hegemony, domination and bullying”, a thinly veiled reference to the west. Putin in an article in China’s People’s Daily praised Xi as β€œhis good old friend” and said he appreciated Beijing’s β€œwell-balanced stance on the events in Ukraine”.
β€œFor Russia, the limitations that existed before are gone,” Gabuev said. β€œPutin is obsessed with this war, and the partnership brings him a lifeline to the economy, critical components for his military machine, and China a tool to push back against the US β€” because the enemy of my enemy is my friend.”
Beijing and Moscow’s deepening ties led US secretary of state Antony Blinken to warn last month that any material Chinese support for Russia’s military would have β€œserious consequences” for relations with the US.
China has responded that the west is fuelling the conflict with its arms sales to Ukraine. β€œChina was not the cause of or catalyst of the Ukraine crisis, nor did it provide weapons to any party in the conflict,” Chinese foreign minister Qin Gang said this month.
Yet while relations with Russia remain important, China has a limited opportunity if it wants to stabilise ties with bigger trading partners in the west.
Xi will have a chance to meet US president Joe Biden at two summits this year but with a US election next year, the chances of further rapprochement with Washington will be limited. And while several European leaders including French president Emmanuel Macron plan to visit China this year, the success of these meetings will be coloured by how far Xi backs Russia in Ukraine.
For this reason, Beijing’s efforts to paint itself as a mediator are important, analysts say. China this month enjoyed a rare success in conflict resolution when it brokered a deal to restore diplomatic relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia.
Solving the Ukraine conflict would be far harder, analysts say. China’s position paper last month failed to condemn the Russian invasion and contained thinly veiled criticisms of the west and Nato.
China β€œlacks the status of an impartial mediator in the Ukraine conflict because of its substantial support of Russia”, said Leif-Eric Easley, a professor of international studies at Ewha Womans University in Seoul. β€œFor China to be helpful, it should not suggest what Kyiv can compromise but rather find a face-saving way for Moscow to pull back forces.”
Contact between Xi and Zelenskyy would represent a concession from China to western scepticism. But any contact was likely to be virtual rather than in-person and the results inconclusive, analysts said, as Xi sought to balance China’s desire to play peacemaker against giving any ground to the US.
Beijing viewed the Ukraine conflict as a proxy struggle pitching Russia against Nato and the US and β€œZelenskyy lacks decision-making power”, said one expert at a Chinese think-tank in Beijing.
β€œAll he [Zelenskyy] can do is to forward the message to Joe Biden. President Xi has no need to endorse Zelenskyy by meeting him in person. China respects Ukraine’s interests. But that’s different from prioritising US interests.”

The Telegraph this afternoon:

Ukraine counter-attack pushes Russian troops back from key Bakhmut supply line

Kyiv’s forces have repelled Moscow’s army further away from the T0504 highway, dubbed β€˜the highway of life’ for those in the besieged city

Ukrainian forces have launched a counter-attack south-west of Bakhmutt_ to push Russian troops away from the last remaining supply route to the besieged city, according to Western analysts.
Geolocated footage shared on social media appeared to show Ukrainian troops in a position once occupied by mercenaries from the Kremlin-linked Wagner Groupp_ in the settlement of Ivanovske, almost four miles from the centre of the salt-mining town.
The attack by Kyiv’s forces pushed the Russians further away from the T0504 highway, which has been dubbed β€œthe highway of life” because of its importance to the troops holding out in Bakhmutt_.
The counter-attack came as authoritative Russian military bloggers raised concerns over Moscow’s ability to resist an imminent offensivee_ by Ukraine.
Russian sources speculated over whether Kyiv was about to launch an offensive south-west of Bakhmut after video footage emerged of a column of Ukrainian armoured vehicles along the highway around 13 miles from the Donetsk region town.
β€œRussians entered the southwestern parts of Bakhmut and operated around the WOG petrol station,” independent military analysts Rochan Consulting said. β€œAttacks were pushed back on Ivanovske or generally along the T0504 road linking Bakhmut with Konstantinovka.”
Footage of the counter-attack appeared to show Ukrainian troops in an area close to the Siversky Donets canal.
The bodies of at least three Russian soldiers were spotted on the heavily-mined battlefield, littered with anti-tank devices, and an abandoned Wagner foxhole.
β€œThe growing Russian discussions about an imminent Ukrainian counteroffensive in the Bakhmut area suggest that Russian sources are increasingly uncertain about the Russian military’s ability to maintain the initiative around Bakhmut,” the US-based Institute for the Study of War said in its latest battlefield assessment.
Russia has been attempting to encircle Ukrainian troops defending Bakhmut for weeks in what is now the longest single-running battle of the warr_.
Kyiv, against the advice of its Western allies, has refused to surrender the townn_, which is of little strategic importance but now holds huge symbolic significance.
Moscow has made β€œmarginal gains” in its efforts to take the city, according to a Ukrainian military spokesman.
But Ukrainian troops on the ground believe if they can hold position for the rest of the month, then the tide will turn in their favour as the enemy exhausts its offensive capabilities in the failed onslaught.
Fears Avdiivka could become β€˜second Bakhmut’
The Russian effort to cut off Avdiivka could soon become a β€œsecond Bakhmut” as the battle intensifies, according to the Ukrainian military.

β€œThe enemy is constantly trying to surround the town of Avdiivka. I agree with my colleagues from the UK that Avdiivka may soon become a second Bakhmut - it is true,” Oleksiy Dmytrashkivskyi, a spokesperson, told Ukrainian television on Monday.
Russia is β€œsuffering quite serious losses”, he added, suggesting Moscow’s forces had lost β€œthree companies” - as many as 450 soldiers.
Moscow recently switched away from frontal attacks in a bid to encircle Ukrainian troops in Avdiivka, cutting them off from vital supplies.
But the Kremlin’s forces have also relied on human wave attackss_, according to a Ukrainian soldier on the ground in the town.
β€œThey are gaining success because they are attacking in waves - first there goes the β€˜cannon fodderr_’ and then professionals are going behind them, the special forces who are trying to strike our firing lines,” Major Maksym Morozov, a special forces soldier, told CNN.
Ukraine has responded to the increasingly difficult situation by transferring ammunition to the town, which is north of Donetsk City, in case defensive lines are breached by Russian forces.
Earlier, British military officials said the Kremlin had made β€œcreeping gains” around the Avdiivka Coke and Chemical plant in a bid to capture the town, which was once considered a key target of Moscow’s invasion plans.
β€œThe Russian operation has largely been carried out by the 1st Army Corps of the Donetsk People’s Republic; local personnel who will know the terrain well. Avdiivka has been on the front line of the Donbas conflict since 2014; the city is now largely destroyed,” the Ministry of Defence said in its daily intelligence update.
