Twin peaks - what the fuck

Twinedpeaks · 19/02/2023 11:25

I'm 30 so this is before my time, but giving it a go.

I'm enjoying the story. But so much of it is SO weird!!! Is that because it hasn't aged well, or was it always weird?

  • some of the acting is atrocious. Like I don't get how it was made
  • the weird random dreams that add nothing
  • the drug runner they capture has a Caribbean accent?!
  • the constant random screaming from Laura's mother -and the visions she has of a long haired man
  • it has a population of 50000 yet everyone knows each other and there's only one bar, and one diner

There were more I'll remember. And I'm still watching so no spoilers please, but was it always this weird?!

Yes, it was always that weird. And the recent sequel series is way beyond weird and into unwatchable.

EmpressaurusOfCats · 19/02/2023 11:56

It was definitely always weird. Fire Walk With Me, the film, was even weirder.

mumonthehill · 19/02/2023 11:56

I tried to re watch it, i saw it the first time around and i had honestly forgotten how very odd it was! I loved it as a teenager especially the music.

flabbygoldfish · 19/02/2023 11:57

I remember watching this when we all got home from the pub - it was on quite late. It actually made more sense after a few drinks - you questioned it less and just accepted the weirdness.

Lurleene · 19/02/2023 11:58

I was obsessed with it when I was a teenager but rewatched it as an adult - my word it was so slooooow. Still shitscared of Bob though.

Skiphopbump · 19/02/2023 11:58

Always weird. I don’t think it made much sense either.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 19/02/2023 12:01

I’m guessing you’re new to David Lynch? 😁
Yes it was always weird, I recommend Eraserhead for your next David Lynch venture.

God yes. I had nightmares about Bob as a teenager.

weemouse · 19/02/2023 12:04

Anything by David Lynch is an aquired taste Smile

Personally I loved Twin Peaks back in the day, and rewatched it all during lockdown, and loved it again. Fire Walk with Me was also good.
The new series not so much, although I appreciate the creativity and out there nature of it.

It's a classic, but not for everybody

Perihelion · 19/02/2023 12:27

The owls are not what they seem 🤣

Purplecatshopaholic · 19/02/2023 12:31

It was always weird, lol. It’s defo not for everyone. I think you just let it wash over you and accept that some of it doesn’t make sense! I loved it back in the day (if I revisited it, I might not!)

Twinnedpeaks · 19/02/2023 13:09

I thought it was supposed to be some amazing detective show. But currently watching log lady and wondering what I've done 😂

IglesiasPiggl · 19/02/2023 13:12

I find David Lunch to be massively self-indulgent at the expense of watchability. I watched Twin Peaks as a teenager when it first came out. There was a lot less choice of entertainment then so we thought it was very cool. Looking at it now, I don't think I could manage more than ten minutes!

NormalForNuneaton · 19/02/2023 13:16

This came out just as I finished Uni and was living in a shared house, including a few stoners ....we loved it, I seem to remember it being pretty ground-breaking for it's weirdness on mainstream TV (for us lot anyway).

I re-watched quite a bit of it in lockdown

FatSealSmugSoup · 19/02/2023 13:16

There was a book too. “Laura’s secret diary” and I loved that. It explained how she got in with the drugs/prostitution and still “prom queen”.

Oneborneverydecade · 19/02/2023 13:17

I also had nightmares about Bob as a teenager. PP saying that there was less choice 30 years ago makes sense

23NameChange · 19/02/2023 13:17

So weird. Also check out David Lynch's film Mulholland Drive. At one point, i thought i had drifted off to sleep and was dreaming 🤣🤪

PetitPorpoise · 19/02/2023 13:17

Glad it's not just me. I've tried it a couple of times but never stuck with it.

Anoisagusaris · 19/02/2023 13:18

I was obsessed with as a teen. Had the book and soundtrack. And I too was scared shitless by Bob!

queenrollo · 19/02/2023 13:36

Yes it was always weird. But I think with David Lynch you just have to go with the flow and not try to make sense of anything.
I think it bucked the trend of how twee/shallow a lot of mainstream media was at the time so it found it's audience because of that.

Agree with PP about Mulholland Drive and my fave is probably Lost Highway.

megletthesecond · 19/02/2023 13:38

It was weird 30 years ago too. Amazing watching it for the first time.

Bemyclementine · 19/02/2023 13:41

It was always weird, buy I think if you were young at the time, it was new and groundbreaking! I was about 15 I think and loved it.

OooPourUsACupLove · 19/02/2023 13:45

The overacting etc is deliberate, as are the stereotypical characters. It's a parody of American soap operas like Days of Our Lives and Peyton Place. So over the show those sterotypical characters like Prom Queen, Jock, Business Magnate, Career Bitch, Uptight Military Dad etc become revealed as complex and weird people in their own right.

However the parody doesn't really come across to UK audiences because we don't know the source material.

MrsMitford3 · 19/02/2023 13:49

I remember absolutely loving it when it came out-it was so different from anything at the time. Completely bonkers but some very scary bits.

I fancy a re-watch but I don't want to ruin my memories 😂

Greensleevevssnotnose · 19/02/2023 13:51

My first wedding was twin peaks themed. It was weird.
