Twin peaks - what the fuck

I'm 30 so this is before my time, but giving it a go.

I'm enjoying the story. But so much of it is SO weird!!! Is that because it hasn't aged well, or was it always weird?

  • some of the acting is atrocious. Like I don't get how it was made
  • the weird random dreams that add nothing
  • the drug runner they capture has a Caribbean accent?!
  • the constant random screaming from Laura's mother -and the visions she has of a long haired man
  • it has a population of 50000 yet everyone knows each other and there's only one bar, and one diner

There were more I'll remember. And I'm still watching so no spoilers please, but was it always this weird?!

Loved it when it came out originally but it is v weird. Don't think I'd watch it now

Bleakhouser · 19/02/2023 13:55

It’s so weird I love it!

Hopeful16 · 19/02/2023 13:57

@FatSealSmugSoup I remember reading the Laura Palmer diary - very strange book!

MrsReeves · 19/02/2023 13:58

FatSealSmugSoup · 19/02/2023 13:16

There was a book too. “Laura’s secret diary” and I loved that. It explained how she got in with the drugs/prostitution and still “prom queen”.

I took this book to my best friend's house when I was about 14. We hid it under her pillow, went out, and when we got back, her mum had replaced it with a bible and had underlined a quote "blessed are those whose hearts are pure" we had to tell her we thought it was similar to Ann Frank's diary and that's why we bought it 🤣

DaisyDucks · 19/02/2023 14:02

Love this show and have them all on Blu-ray 😀

StaunchMomma · 19/02/2023 14:12

It's a David Lynch creation - ALWAYS weird!

You'll need to watch the Twin Peaks film, Fire Walk with Me, to find out exactly who/what happened to Laura Palmer.

In the meantime, enjoy the utter randomness of the log lady, the weird language of the red room (the words in the script were all backwards so when they then played the clips backwards the words sound right{ish!}), trust that the wooden acting is totally on purpose and grab yourself a damn fine cup of coffee to go with it!

I was obsessed with it when I was a teenager but rewatched it as an adult - my word it was so slooooow. Still shitscared of Bob though.

I still can't see a dresser without thinking of him popping up behind it!

ShandaLear · 19/02/2023 14:15

It is happening again.

I didn’t sleep for 2 nights after one particular episode featuring Bob (if you’ve seen it you’ll know exactly which one)

Are you telling me that even after I get to the end of season 1, I won't know?!

pippinsleftleg · 19/02/2023 14:24

I love Twin Peaks. First watched it when I was a teen, then again when season three came out and then introduced DD to it.

if DH is walking around looking vague we call him Dougie Jones 😂

Squiblet · 19/02/2023 14:39

It makes more sense if you take into account how shit a lot of TV was in those days ... there was less artistry, way more production-line stuff with no creativity. I think David Lynch was just like, hey, they've given me a show and loads of cash, I'm gonna run with it and really make them sit up!

We loved it as teenagers - and so many of the actors were so good-looking, too.

EmpressaurusOfCats · 19/02/2023 11:56

It was definitely always weird. Fire Walk With Me, the film, was even weirder.

But had a brilliant song ‘Falling’, which is now todays ear worm!

Welfast · 19/02/2023 14:51

It's stupendous. I'd love to watch it all afresh

megletthesecond · 19/02/2023 14:55

I still get the willies when I see a circle of sapling trees.

Stoechas · 19/02/2023 14:56

I will never rewatch it. Want to hold onto the memory of that spectacular, creepy, sexy weirdness untarnished.
God I LOVED that show.

Aleaiactaest · 19/02/2023 14:58

Yes always weird and a cult classic. It is a Freudian dreamscape type series. Highly symbolical and lots of the unconscious etc- the music as important as memory, dream, plot, lust, desire, identity. If you read up on the genre it will make more sense.

OntarioBagnet · 19/02/2023 14:58

It was always weird. Where is it on btw, I might be up for a rewatch.

OntarioBagnet · 19/02/2023 15:01

Oh and watch Wild At Heart with Nicolas Cage, another David lynch classic.

KaleFairy · 19/02/2023 15:03

I love it! And I think The Return is even better!

hekissedmybottom · 19/02/2023 15:04

Are you familiar with David Lynch in general? It's quite niche I suppose. I love him and grew up on this show. Yes, it's weird, it's meant to be. It's very stylised.

hekissedmybottom · 19/02/2023 15:08

the weird random dreams that add nothing - make sure you watch the movie afterwards, Fire, Walk with Me. It does add, it's about a girl whose mind is messed up and you see why as it goes on. It's inside her mind.

the drug runner they capture has a Caribbean accent?! It will be French Canadian?

the constant random screaming from Laura's mother -and the visions she has of a long haired man - Don't want to spoil it but again it's about her mind and why her mind is like that. I don't think it becomes truly clear until you see the movie, prequel to the series.

it has a population of 50000 yet everyone knows each other and there's only one bar, and one diner - that you see. Plus, small mountain towns like that are going to be that way, the other diner will be ages away and the people we don't follow will be going there. It focuses on a tiny group of people actually.

hekissedmybottom · 19/02/2023 15:08

But ultimately it's not based in reality completely. It's his pastiche on soap operas at the time.

Twinnedpeaks · 19/02/2023 15:11

the drug runner they capture has a Caribbean accent?! It will be French Canadian?

Yeah I guess it's supposed to be, but comes out Caribbean!!

Right well I've just finished season 1 and no wiser. Shall I just wiki the plot or persevere with season 2?

hekissedmybottom · 19/02/2023 15:12

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 19/02/2023 12:01

I’m guessing you’re new to David Lynch? 😁
Yes it was always weird, I recommend Eraserhead for your next David Lynch venture.

That's cruel 😂Seriously though I'm a huge Lynch fan and I definitely recommend Inland Empire after you've watched Twin Peaks series 1, I'd actually skip 2, and then the movie, then the Return, then Inland Empire.

It's on paramount, which I'm watching on Prime
