Twin peaks - what the fuck

Twinedpeaks · 19/02/2023 11:25

I'm 30 so this is before my time, but giving it a go.

I'm enjoying the story. But so much of it is SO weird!!! Is that because it hasn't aged well, or was it always weird?

  • some of the acting is atrocious. Like I don't get how it was made
  • the weird random dreams that add nothing
  • the drug runner they capture has a Caribbean accent?!
  • the constant random screaming from Laura's mother -and the visions she has of a long haired man
  • it has a population of 50000 yet everyone knows each other and there's only one bar, and one diner

There were more I'll remember. And I'm still watching so no spoilers please, but was it always this weird?!

I love Twin Peaks! Going to start to rewatch it tonight!

Xanorra · 19/02/2023 18:50

It was always weird. David Lynch is a bit like Marmite you either love it or hate it. Best way to enjoy it is not to try to see too much sense in it.
I don’t think any other series can match it and its world building, the music, the characters, the town itself… I’m another one still seeing Bob in my nightmares!

StopStartStop · 19/02/2023 18:57

Bob.

Calistan · 19/02/2023 19:02

I have tried to rewatch it (loved it originally) but it is terribly slow. It came out when I was 10 FFS, why was I watching it? Why does it stay with me? Didn't realise until lately haha.

helloisitmeyourelookingfor · 19/02/2023 19:07

Always weird but watch it and pay attentions because a lot of the weirdness threads through to be significant to different plot lines

It's very clever

CocktailNapkin · 19/02/2023 19:21

The last scene of the Return will make your hair stand on end. Madchen Amik has got some pipes on her yet. Fun fact that thr guy playing Bob was a production assistant they drafted in when the hired actor didn't show.

I'd argue to watch Blue Velvet as I think that is the test TP before Lynch had worked out some key themes. Somehow Dennis Hopper was actually sober through that filming but you would never know it. The candy colored clown scene is brilliant.

Lynch is fantastic but his whole thing is the dreamlike state.

Glittertwins · 19/02/2023 19:22

We used to spend half our A level class discussing the previous night's TP, our lecturer loved it too.

Papayaya · 19/02/2023 20:01

The idea for TP came to Lynch a dream, weird… His daughter wrote the secret diary of Laura Palmer. Basically it’s all really messed up and scary, the basis is ‘the evil that men do’ according to Lynch.

DysonBison · 19/02/2023 20:20

A key difference between watching then and now is that back in 1989 an entire week would pass between episodes so the slooooow unfurling of the 'plot' wasn't quite as frustrating as bingeing it now in a box set and realising after seven solid hours of viewing that you're still watching a man talking into a Dictaphone in what looks like a sauna-themed hotel.

JustAnotherPoster00 · 19/02/2023 20:59

Bob, I want all my garmonbozia

Butteredtoast55 · 19/02/2023 21:15

Very weird but truly it terrified me, especially the ending. I can't even type the name of the terrifying character.

OnSecondThoughts · 19/02/2023 21:43

Don't get me started on Twin Peaks. I had heard for years and years all about how wonderful, groundbreaking and influential this series was, about how the symbiosis of its deep metaphors was juxaposed with the striking wordplay of the...etc etc, and so when I saw the DVD boxset in a charity shop for a few quid, I thought Oooh, I must watch this and see what all the fuss is about, as I do like arty-type stuff.
I think I actually stamped on the boxset before flinging it into the bin after getting up to about episode 3. Utterly pretentious, up-itself pile of seagull poop.

husbandcallsmepickle · 19/02/2023 21:47

How far have you got with the series OP? It just gets even weirder.

InelegantAndWild · 19/02/2023 21:52

The Norwegians are leaving! The Norwegians are leaving!

beastlyslumber · 19/02/2023 22:04

I loved twin peaks. Bob was terrifying and also Leo and Shelley... shudder.

Where are you watching OP? Cos on one of the streaming services they took out the episode where you find out who Bob is.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 19/02/2023 22:08

Wasn't considered weird at all in the 90s. All of that was standard behaviour. From Washington state to Watford.

WonderingWanda · 19/02/2023 22:12

Always odd, best thing about it was the theme tune!

DelphiniumBlue123 · 19/02/2023 22:31

Ooo loved this back in the day!
Mulholland Drive too 😊
Yes it was weird.

Bad acting?! Series 1 is the most amazing show. I was in love with Bobby Briggs for years. The latest series was utter crap though, although I got to see Bobby again and the Double R and a massive hit of nostalgia so I still watched every second of it. Didn't like the film, though.

theTractorFactor · 23/05/2023 18:17

I followed the recaps of the new series on a US site. Literally nothing made sense.

LaMaG · 23/05/2023 18:19

EmpressaurusOfCats · 19/02/2023 12:04

God yes. I had nightmares about Bob as a teenager.

Didn't he suddenly climb over a couch towards the screen? It was the most terrifying thing I ever saw back then, nightmares. Remember Heather Graham was a nun in it?

1idea · 23/05/2023 18:38

FatSealSmugSoup · 19/02/2023 13:16

There was a book too. “Laura’s secret diary” and I loved that. It explained how she got in with the drugs/prostitution and still “prom queen”.

I think I still have my copy of this!

pigalow27 · 23/05/2023 18:53

Is it just my imagination but was there a llama in the background in one of the scenes that David Lynch himself was in as the deaf agent who comes to help Dale Cooper?

CharlottenBurger · 23/05/2023 19:03

Talisin · 19/02/2023 11:54

Yes, it was always that weird. And the recent sequel series is way beyond weird and into unwatchable.

The recent 2017 series was one of the best things DH and I have ever seen on TV. Mind you we are both massive David Lynch fans. I think the first series was deliberately made in a hokey way to subvert the medium. It was the late 1980s and early 90s anyhow. I guess Lynch is like Marmite - it's either love or hate.

Yes, there was a llama in season 1, episode 4. A patient at the veterinary clinic. A genuine drama llama. Incidentally, what's with this 'drama llama' that everybody says these days? What's wrong with the old 'drama queen' which applies to both sexes?
