Twin peaks - what the fuck

Twinedpeaks · 19/02/2023 11:25

I'm 30 so this is before my time, but giving it a go.

I'm enjoying the story. But so much of it is SO weird!!! Is that because it hasn't aged well, or was it always weird?

  • some of the acting is atrocious. Like I don't get how it was made
  • the weird random dreams that add nothing
  • the drug runner they capture has a Caribbean accent?!
  • the constant random screaming from Laura's mother -and the visions she has of a long haired man
  • it has a population of 50000 yet everyone knows each other and there's only one bar, and one diner

There were more I'll remember. And I'm still watching so no spoilers please, but was it always this weird?!

Watch Mulholland Drive and The Lost Highway to get an additional feel for his work. Best thing to do is just let your mind float along with it all like a dream sequence.

The overacting etc is deliberate, as are the stereotypical characters. It's a parody of American soap operas like Days of Our Lives and Peyton Place. So over the show those sterotypical characters like Prom Queen, Jock, Business Magnate, Career Bitch, Uptight Military Dad etc become revealed as complex and weird people in their own right.

However the parody doesn't really come across to UK audiences because we don't know the source material.

Exactly what I was going to say.

lljkk · 19/02/2023 15:26

I enjoyed maybe 3 episodes of TP when it came out & after that couldn't make myself care.

boabitybowster · 19/02/2023 15:27

For me, nothing else I've watched in the last 30 years has come even close to the bonkers world of Twin Peaks. Still love it.

Twinnedpeaks · 19/02/2023 15:40

Right, I've just Googled the plot and 'who killed Laura palmer' and what a load of bollocks!!! There's 10hours of my life lost

Koicrap · 19/02/2023 15:43

Just Lynchian, innit. Sole purpose is to weird you out.

TheFormidableMrsC · 19/02/2023 15:50

I was OBSESSED with Twin Peaks the first time round. I can't imagine what I'd make of it now. It's was extremely weird.

MegBusset · 19/02/2023 15:53

Ah, I love Twin Peaks so much (even the drop-off in quality in season 2 and weird James Hurley side plot etc). It’s relatively accessible by Lynch standards, I think. And very funny. Me and all my friends were 12-13 and obsessed with it when it came out, it was the Stranger Things of its day. I seem to recall the Diary of Laura Palmer being hot property in the playground for its erotic content

I still can't see a dresser without thinking of him popping up behind it!

Or hidden behind a huge pile of cuddly toys as in the film 🤢

Schoolchoicesucks · 19/02/2023 15:56

Loved the weirdness of Twin Peaks at the time. DH is a David Lynch fan so we watched the sequel a while back. Made original Twin Peaks look entirely normal. How many episodes in the weird space casino thing with shots focused on the plug sockets?

FineThings · 19/02/2023 16:01

We used to discuss every episode in great detail on the school bus the next day. I had a party when the last episode aired, cherry pie, coffee and donuts, and we all dressed as the characters - I was Shelley. Wish I had pics, I remember thinking I looked the bees knees. There was nothing else like it on TV. Loved the music, and the general dreamlike atmosphere.

nicetoseetgesunsout · 19/02/2023 16:08

I think I was about 18/19 at the time. It was bonkers but engaging for sure. I remember wanting to look like sherilyn Flynn as she was so beautiful (probably still is- off to google)

Twinnedpeaks · 19/02/2023 14:16

Are you telling me that even after I get to the end of season 1, I won't know?!

I mean, well......

😂

Lynch was pretty clever in getting everyone to watch the film, really!

You do find out who but not really? Why is the most important thing, I guess.

Just watch the film, is my advice! 😂

But had a brilliant song ‘Falling’, which is now todays ear worm!

I was in a shop the other day where Falling was playing on the radio. Instant visions of red curtains & a yearning for cherry pie.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 19/02/2023 12:01

I’m guessing you’re new to David Lynch? 😁
Yes it was always weird, I recommend Eraserhead for your next David Lynch venture.

Eraserhead is pretty nightmarish / bad trippy tbf. Twin Peaks was cult viewing back in the day and yes, weird. Made stars of several folk who were in it. Log lady will stay with my generation for ever.

FineThings · 19/02/2023 17:06

I not only had The Secret Diary of Laura Palmer but also Dale Cooper: My Life, My Tapes and the Access Guide to Twin Peaks, a Lonely Planet type visitors guide .www.amazon.co.uk/Welcome-Twin-Peaks-Access-Guide/dp/0671743996
And the board game!

Bookist · 19/02/2023 17:25

God I loved this as a teenager. The actors were staggeringly beautiful.

Giggorata · 19/02/2023 17:33

This is one of the TV programmes that we all (me, DH, DS1and DS2) watched together, week to week. We were all obsessed with it.

x2boys · 19/02/2023 17:34

Yes I watched it or tried watching it as a teen ,in 49 now ,it was always weird.

Vinomummyinlockdown · 19/02/2023 17:35

David Lynch. Weird frikkin crap IMO.

TheLogLady · 19/02/2023 18:25

Genius.

my log does not judge.

Montgomerymmoose · 19/02/2023 18:31

We always made a point of being stoned when it was on .

Stokey · 19/02/2023 18:34

Sometimes my arms bend back ....

I was very proud when I learnt how to do Audrey's cherry stalk trick.

DysonBison · 19/02/2023 18:41

I loved Twin Peaks. I was the kind of teenager who was mentally walking around with a theme tune playing like Audrey Horne.

Bob gave me nightmares but the moment that absolutely scared the living bejeezus out of me involved (for want of spoilers) Leo and his wheelchair. Shelley! NOOOOO!
