Does The Godfather only appeal to men?

I was discussing The Godfather with a friend, having just watched it again and she insists that it's just a movie for guys which seems odd to me. I'm sure a lot of people don't like it, regardless of sex, but I'd imagine that it has fans of both sexes, likewise numerous other stereotypically "male movies"

Which made me wonder, are there any other movies that you think are almost exclusively a "guy thing"?

God no one of my favourite movies!

devildeepbluesea · 17/01/2023 18:37

Defo don’t think The Godfather is a guy movie.

Bideshi · 17/01/2023 18:38

Godfather II is my all time best film, with GFI not far behind.

Godfather is ace! I don't see the appeal of films like The Hangover or Hot Tub Time Machine though, those cheesy American guy coms seem to appeal mostly to slightly pathetic men imo...

chipsandpeas · 17/01/2023 18:44

one of my fav movies

Palegreenstars · 17/01/2023 18:44

My mum and I were eating oranges this weekend and discussing how much we love that scene….it’s a classic

PicklesAndTequila · 17/01/2023 18:45

I saw all three in the cinema last year and loved them.

FuckabethFuckor · 17/01/2023 18:46

I don’t think there’s any such thing as ‘guy’s films’ or ‘women’s films’ beyond dead-ended categorisation by the hard-of-thinking. Even stuff marketed as ‘chick flicks’ (god, I hate that term) gets a male audience; plenty of blokes watched Grease, or Dirty Dancing, or the Pitch Perfect trilogy of effluence films and plenty of women watch The Godfather, Alien, or the Hangover —trilogy of effluence-- films.

Figgygal · 17/01/2023 18:50

What of course not
It's an acting masterclass

Which scene is that please? There's so many oranges throughout the movie.

It always makes me crave oranges and I'm not much of a fruit fan.

Not at all. I love it, and it's my mother's favourite movie. We went to showings of all three in the cinema last year, even though she's seen it hundreds of times.

I love the Godfather, it was beautifully filmed. Didn't care for the sequels though.

And the book was a bit weird, going on about a characters vagina being too big and needing surgery as a b-plot Grin

ScreamingBeans · 17/01/2023 18:57

No it's a brilliant film. The soundtrack alone is incredible.

DawdlingService · 17/01/2023 18:59

It was weird. I could have done with less of the Lucy Mancini story, less information about Sonny's dick and even less Johnny Fontane but I love how much more depth the characters get in the book so I still really enjoy it.

It's an excellent book too.

mellicauli · 17/01/2023 19:00

I think it is easy to imagine what kind of film the Godfather is if you haven't watched it or just read the synopsis. There's a lot more about human relationships and family dynamics to chew on. And exactly how a series of seemingly rational decisions leaves the main protagonist as head of a New York crime syndicate. But you are right, not a guy movie.

However, I have yet met a woman who enjoyed the film Zulu. Any takers?

theoldhasgone · 17/01/2023 19:01

No, of course it is not only for men, she has missed the entire point of the film. Mafia movies of all sorts are interesting for lots of reasons but The Godfather is a cut above.

Interesting. I've never watched Zulu. I might have to give it a try.

The Godfather is absolutely my all time fave. First one is the best but I have watched them all over and over. Think I'll watch it tonight if I can find it. There are a lot of themes that most people can resonate with.

Also love Goodfellas.

LaMagdalena · 17/01/2023 19:09

I watched it for the first time a couple of years ago. I thought Al Pacino was kind of hot and then had an Al Pacino film binge. Definitely not just for guys!

Yiayoula · 17/01/2023 19:11

I’ll just leave this here ….. ❤️

Does The Godfather only appeal to men?
Greydog · 17/01/2023 19:14

I read the book first - it was a Christmas present more years ago that I can think, and then I saw the film - and I loved it. I still love it - all three of them are fabulous. And I quite like Zulu!

Iateallthechips · 17/01/2023 19:15

Dh likes it. I can’t bear it.

But I only like end of the world/zombie things.

Allblackeverythingalways · 17/01/2023 19:17

I love gangster films!
The godfather
Goodfellas
Casino
The untouchables...

Love them

Craghopper1 · 17/01/2023 19:18

'Leave the gun, take the cannoli!'

Bloody love all three and last time I checked I was female. I've seen them countless times.
