Does The Godfather only appeal to men?

I was discussing The Godfather with a friend, having just watched it again and she insists that it's just a movie for guys which seems odd to me. I'm sure a lot of people don't like it, regardless of sex, but I'd imagine that it has fans of both sexes, likewise numerous other stereotypically "male movies"

Which made me wonder, are there any other movies that you think are almost exclusively a "guy thing"?

One of my favorite movies of all time.

If any of you have Paramount you should watch The Offer which is a series about the making of the movie, it's based on the memories of producer Albert Ruddy, it's absolutely brilliant.

Aaah I’ve seen a trailer for that. Thank you for the tip. I also love the story of the lot cat that gatecrashed the wedding meeting but Marlon went with it and they had to adjust the sound of the cat purring . Marlon loved cats.

Then when little Vito gets to the immigration desk, unable to speak a word of English, the guard mixes up his name & town of origin & casually renames Vito Andolini to Vito Corleone.

Yes and he has TB so quarantined ….that’s the shot of him looking out to Statue of Liberty, from the hospital….beautiful child, then of course it moves onto young Robert De Niro looking so handsome. Love 1 and 2 so much ❤️

I love it. Pre kids, my DH and I used to do marathons and watch all three on a weekend. Three is a slog though. Andy Garcia is a terrible choice!

It's an amazing movie!
My sisters are big fans if martial arts movies too, which I do think as more male.

Love The Godfather

Rockingcloggs · 18/01/2023 06:54

Absolutely love it! I also loved Mario Puzos The Last Don which I think was shown in two parts! Only watched it once but it was fabulous!

My favourite genre is the War film though! I can't get enough and I despise any form of chick film!! Especially Dirty bloody dancing!

Anyone who loves it , watch the offer ".

HaroldeVwilliam · 18/01/2023 07:36

I have a Pal who says things like that and I cringe!!

ancientgran · 18/01/2023 07:38

One of my favourite films so I don't think it is a guy movie.

Many years ago, the BBC showed a directors cut across 5 nights of 1 & 2 spliced into chronological order. A masterpiece.

Massive Al fan - anyone who is should checkout "Looking for Richard".

I loved that chronological version. I'd love a copy of it but I've never seen a DVD or streaming version.

This thread reminds me of football debates. All the women come on to say they lurve football and have been fans since they were a child going to the footy with their dad/grandad etc how absolutely ridiculous to think that football is a man’s thing. And yet you go to any match in match day and look at the sheer numbers of men compared to women. Talk to any group of ordinary women, any day of the week - does football get mentioned? Never. Only probably to moan about it.

It’s a man thing. So is The Godfather. So is that other supposed masterpiece of film making ‘Apocalypse Now’. Yes, brilliant films, and I can see why some women would rate them as favourites. Some of my favourite movies are violent gangster type films but they have not been made for a female audience per se. Do they even pass the Bechdel test? I dunno but it seems disingenuous to say they’re for a female audience when they’re clearly not.

Is there such a thing as ‘a female audience’ or a ‘male audience’ though? It’s an interesting question. Women aren’t a homogenous mass who all want to watch the same things. (And neither are men.)

I mean, I agree with you to a degree and you have a good point about majority audiences driving cultural product. But I think saying that The Godfather (and indeed football) is a man thing is an overly macro generalisation. Just because more men happen to do something than women, doesn’t make it a ‘man thing’. And just because more women happen to do something than women, doesn’t make it a ‘woman thing’.

And, arguably, doesn’t doing so contribute to the ongoing exclusion of one sex or the other from things?

TheRealKatnissEverdeen · 18/01/2023 12:27

@Felix01 what did ya think?

mellicauli · 18/01/2023 21:29

I do think there is a female market and a male market for films. Sometimes they like the same things. Sometimes they don't. I like this reddit post which shows the biggest disparity in ranking of films men vs women.
www.reddit.com/r/movies/comments/82iu2z/which_movies_have_the_largest_disparity_when/

Turns out men don't tend like Harry Potter as much as women. And women don't like cowboy movies as much as men. But that doesn't speak for every man and every woman.

But The Godfather doesn't figure.
