Does The Godfather only appeal to men?

I was discussing The Godfather with a friend, having just watched it again and she insists that it's just a movie for guys which seems odd to me. I'm sure a lot of people don't like it, regardless of sex, but I'd imagine that it has fans of both sexes, likewise numerous other stereotypically "male movies"

Which made me wonder, are there any other movies that you think are almost exclusively a "guy thing"?

It's a film that makes the ugly beautiful.

And I think the Sicily look is the best one

Love The Godfather, my favourite is part 2 but only the Vito scenes, have long dreamt of getting a chronological cut !

Also adored The Offer which made me fall in love with The Godfather all over again !!!

AuntieMarys · 17/01/2023 21:10

One of my top 10 films.

The Godfather 1&2 are up there with my favourite films of all time. I can’t imagine why she thinks they would just appeal to men. Al Pacino was very hot in it as well, which didn’t hurt but they are amazing films. 😊

SerendipityJane · 17/01/2023 21:19

Many years ago, the BBC showed a directors cut across 5 nights of 1 & 2 spliced into chronological order. A masterpiece.

Massive Al fan - anyone who is should checkout "Looking for Richard".

spurs4ever · 17/01/2023 21:19

Absolutely love the first two films. The 3rd I could've done without seeing but Al Pacino is my favourite actor ever. Just perfect x

ANiceBigCupOfTea · 17/01/2023 21:20

I love it.
And Good fellas and The Sopranos

Ah, yes …..( happy sigh ! ) ❤️

I've heard about this version but never seen it. Hopefully they'll show it again because I'd love to see it in chronological order

I wish that they'd included some backstory for the siblings when they were in their teens/early 20s. I'd love to have learned more about Sonny getting into the business(I appreciate it's covered to an extent in the book) and Tom's backstory which is only mentioned briefly in the movie. He has such a sad history and I'd love to see how he was brought into the family, how his close bond with Sonny develops and how he adopts a culture that wasn't his.

I've never seen The Sopranos. Now I'm wondering if I should give it a go.

I remember that..late 90’s maybe ? Brilliant
I did a pilgrimage to Bar Vitelli in Savoca Sicily in 1996 where they filmed the wedding of Appolonia to Michael (he got hit by the thunderbolt)

its a masterpiece and that shot of child Vito andolini in the Ellis Island hospital is so beautiful

DawdlingService · 17/01/2023 21:46

I guess I'm watching Part 2 tomorrow night. I haven't seen it for a few years and you're all making me want to watch it right now.

I'm very envious of those of you who have been to Sicily.

This thread reminds me of football debates. All the women come on to say they lurve football and have been fans since they were a child going to the footy with their dad/grandad etc how absolutely ridiculous to think that football is a man’s thing. And yet you go to any match in match day and look at the sheer numbers of men compared to women. Talk to any group of ordinary women, any day of the week - does football get mentioned? Never. Only probably to moan about it.

It’s a man thing. So is The Godfather. So is that other supposed masterpiece of film making ‘Apocalypse Now’. Yes, brilliant films, and I can see why some women would rate them as favourites. Some of my favourite movies are violent gangster type films but they have not been made for a female audience per se. Do they even pass the Bechdel test? I dunno but it seems disingenuous to say they’re for a female audience when they’re clearly not.

@DawdlingService

That is a beautiful and haunting image. You could frame so many of the moments from the movies because they're so exquisite and/or powerful.

Thinking of the OP, wasn't disputing the probable intended audience, but asserting that lots women liked The Godfather.

I like GF I and II very much, though will go out on a limb here and say how bloody awful Diane Keaton is in GF II, particularly the abortion revelation scene (which sounds like a BBT episode title).

gravyriceandchips · 17/01/2023 22:17

Ive never seen them. Are they worth a watch?

UWhatNow · 17/01/2023 22:22

“Thinking of the OP, wasn't disputing the probable intended audience, but asserting that lots women liked The Godfather.”

Yes fair enough. They are quality but too much machismo for me!

TheDogsMother · 17/01/2023 22:22

God no ! Another woman who loves the movie. I got rid of most of my DVDs a while back but I can't bring myself to get rid of my beautiful box set Godfather trilogy.

I've never seen Goodfellas but saw it had a five star rating. So you'd all recommend it ?

ladygindiva · 17/01/2023 22:27

Godather is one of my favourite films, defo not a boys film. Bond movies always strike me as just for guys, I can't stand them.

TealSteal · 17/01/2023 22:29

It's a very good film and part 2 is even better, a total classic What sort of films does she deem as for women I wonder?

young Vito andolini (from Corleone)…..love this shot from the film

Then when little Vito gets to the immigration desk, unable to speak a word of English, the guard mixes up his name & town of origin & casually renames Vito Andolini to Vito Corleone.
