Does The Godfather only appeal to men?

I was discussing The Godfather with a friend, having just watched it again and she insists that it's just a movie for guys which seems odd to me. I'm sure a lot of people don't like it, regardless of sex, but I'd imagine that it has fans of both sexes, likewise numerous other stereotypically "male movies"

Which made me wonder, are there any other movies that you think are almost exclusively a "guy thing"?

It's one of my favourite films, I've seen it countless times and I still took myself off to see it in the cinema last year.

It's got everything - brilliant score, great cinematography, an amazing cast, beautiful scenery, a brilliant story.

The Rewatchables podcast episode about it is really worth a listen.

I'm not such a fan of Part II though - I find it too disjointed and complicated and don't get as involved in it as much as Part 1.

What an odd thing to believe, The Godfather is superb! I’m female and it’s one of those films that if it’s on tv, I’ll probably end up watching it again. I had a massive crush on Pacino in my youth 🤣 As a result, I’ve seen GF and Dog Day Afternoon more times than is normal.

I rewatched Goodfellas over Christmas and it’s another where you see so many memes and gifs of it, you forget how good it really is

I prefer the first too though so many of my favourite moments and quotes come from part 2 but I'd rather spend more time with the brothers, Michael, Tom and Fredo than learning about Vito's backstory, interesting as it may be.

However, I have yet met a woman who enjoyed the film Zulu. Any takers?

Interesting. I've never watched Zulu. I might have to give it a try.

Fantastic Saturday afternoon film, I'd rather watch that than Dirty Dancing any day.

Allblackeverythingalways · 17/01/2023 20:02

Goodfellas has that amazing shot (all one shot, on a steadicam) from street to table. 3 minutes long.
Brilliant.

HaddawayAndShite · 17/01/2023 20:07

I hate most romantic “chick flick” movies. Give me a good action anyway over the fucking notebook. We have a shrine wall dedicated to Arnie movie posters, Terminator 2 was a bonding movie for me and DP

siblingrevelryagain · 17/01/2023 20:10

One of my favourite films, got my eldest Son’s name from one of the characters

Ihatethenewlook · 17/01/2023 19:24

12 years we were trying for a boy. When we finally got him my oh named him. I didn’t find out until he was 2 that he was named after a godfather character 🤦🏼‍♀️

That's piqued my interest.
Is your son:

Vito
Michael
Santino (Sonny)
Frederico (Fredo)
Tom
Hyman
Clemenza
Buonasera
Frankie
Johnny

I really want to know now.

Yabado · 17/01/2023 20:13

My sons middle name is also one of the characters in Godfather but his dad is Italian 😂😂

HeavenIsAHalfpipe · 17/01/2023 20:14

Not necessarily just for men, but I think The Godfather is overrated, too long, and boring. Just don't see the appeal at ALL. It leaves me cold. Sorry to those who like it. 😬

Backstreetsbackalrightdadada · 17/01/2023 20:14

It’s amazing! A family drama, crime film
but also like a period piece (and Godfather II gives a great insight into American immigration at the turn of the century)

HaggisWurst · 17/01/2023 20:17

Your friend is weird. I'm female and the godfather movies are my favourites. I also write historical fiction and have a New York mafia based book in progress.

IntentionalError · 17/01/2023 20:20

Absolutely not. The Godfather & The Godfather part 2 are among the very greatest films ever made, and you don’t require particular genitalia to understand that and enjoy them.

The whole idea of ‘guy films’ & ‘chick flicks’ is reductive, outdated sexist nonsense.

Greenfairydust · 17/01/2023 20:21

Of course not. This is probably my favourite movie and I must have seen at least 20 times by now! I have Italian origins and I love that film and know most of the dialogue by heart...

Santino (sonny) 🙄😂 could defo be worse going by that list I suppose. I overheard him telling a neighbour who he’d named him after. When I pulled him on it he said ‘I thought you knew’? He never told me and he knew I’d never seen the godfather

Noicant · 17/01/2023 20:25

Loved it, made Dh watch the trilogy with me.

Sunnytwobridges · 17/01/2023 20:25

My DM actually introduced me to the Godfather movies. I love them. I love mobster/mafia movies though. Something about that culture/era that is very intriguing.

whiteroseredrose · 17/01/2023 20:25

I love the Godfather too. I read the book many times before watching the film.

TheRealKatnissEverdeen · 17/01/2023 20:26

@Allblackeverythingalways
I love the frenetic scene where he is making spaghetti sauce and has to pick up family from the airport, the babysitter is being sassy and the Feds are tailing him. It's acted our brilliantly.
Whenever I'm juggling a lot and feeling chaotic I liken myself and life to that scene.

Tamarindtree · 17/01/2023 20:27

No. It’s a classic film that appeals to men and women.

GladysPew · 17/01/2023 20:38

Love Godfather 1& 2. Visited the town in Sicily where the church scene was filmed. (The same church was in all 3 films)
Also love "Once upon a time in America"
Brilliant film, beautiful soundtrack.

rogueone · 17/01/2023 20:41

Godfather is a classic -

I also love goodfellas, deer hunter , raging bull, taxi driver apocalypse now!

rogueone · 17/01/2023 20:42

GladysPew forgot about once upon a time in America - brilliant

beeny · 17/01/2023 20:44

Love the Godfather !

JoonT · 17/01/2023 20:49

No, I’d say they appeal to everyone. I re-watched them recently and, tbh, now think they’re a bit overrated. Not bad (on the contrary), just overrated. The first one is the best.
