Infuriated at lack of good female role models for children

The likes of Kim K and Cardi B are DISGUSTING! Cardi B admitted to robbing/drugging men, there are naked photos of her on the internet and her raps are vulgar and talentless. Kim K got famous off a sex tape that is still online and shows off her excessive consumption. She also encourages impressionable women to feel bad about their bodies by lying about their own surgeries!

When i was a teen, I wish I heard about Ruth Bader Ginsberg instead of these 2 clowns

Slightly weird point of view

It’s not a lack of good role models, it was poor parenting, poor education etc that meant you weren’t guided to look in the right places.

plus maybe you weren’t a teen who wanted to find good role models? Your own temperament and desire to be trendy or whatever, comes into it too.

be glad you have matured and can look at the world with wiser eyes now

bloodyeverlastinghell · 04/01/2023 10:22

Are you in the States?

Catspyjamas17 · 04/01/2023 10:22

Heh. Try growing up in the 1980s.

caravanbuckie · 04/01/2023 10:23

These women are not role models for our children though.

eynewbie2023 · 04/01/2023 10:24

But who could have guided me? The school I went to taught me academic things-- it wasn't their job to tell me who to respect. My parents were concerned more about my health and performance.

But millions of teens follow them online and buy their shit.

And I am confident that many millions more know them to be absolutely talentless shite with their big stupid lips, bums and breasts on display all the time.

The positive role models are there eg Greta thunberg but yes, I agree the balance of exposure is on those who are nothing to aspire to. We all just need to keep reinforcing to our daughters the value of things beyond big fake faces and bodies

Covetthee · 04/01/2023 10:32

i agree in some ways, but i think its our job as parents as to what we let our children access too when they are younger

its a lot harder when they are older and have access to social media etc as the likes of the kardashians/influencers have taken over.

not just girls though, i mean the boys have Andrew tate. Think i’d take Kim tbh

Keroppi · 04/01/2023 10:34

So Cardi B/Kim K and RBG are the only two women you can conceive of as role models? Says more about the media you consume than anything. Embarrassing

eynewbie2023 · 04/01/2023 10:37

There are many more but I don't have time to name all
Also, most young people are on social media and Kim K and co. dominate socials. Young people also like pop/rap music, which is dominated by vulgar performers. Not to mention that these rappers/influencers are mentioned in regular print media too.
Unless your teen exclusively consumes the Financial Times and books, they will at least know of Kim K and her ilk.

My DD and DNs have never struggled to find amazing role models. They never owned fashion dolls or watched any of this crap on TV either! Ruth Bader Ginsberg is unlikely to be a big draw to teenagers - look at Laetitia Ky on instagram - there are amazing young women out there changing the world :)

mewkins · 04/01/2023 10:44

Your example doesn't illustrate a lack of good female role models. It demonstrates that there are some bad role models. There are plenty more in music, sports, film and TV etc who are brilliant. I don't think anybody sets out to be a role model.

SeasonFinale · 04/01/2023 10:46

Malala, Lionesses, Greta Thunberg, Emma Radacanu, Jessica Gadirova, Amal Clooney. Also well known women who would be good female role models.

eynewbie2023 · 04/01/2023 10:48

But these women all have less followers than the Kartrashian clan, indicating that more young people/teens follow the kartrashians than these women

Well I would suggest this is about good marketing more than anything else. The kardashians are a brand.

I think there’s plenty of good role models for children. They just might be people in real life who children have relationships with (as well as famous people).

Everydaywheniwakeup · 04/01/2023 10:55

Do you actually have teenage daughters? Mine would never be interested in the women you refer to. She is totally disinterested in the image, product and lifestyle portrayed and does not surround herself with others who are. Not all young women think about nothing but their eyebrows and Instagram.

Covetthee · 04/01/2023 11:00

I get what you mean OP, of course there are good role models out there but no one with the exposure of the likes of kardashians etc. most people whether they like them
or not know who the kardashians are. The only good role model with a massive ‘audience’ I can think of is JK Rowling, and look how she is treated by the media and people because she dares speak up.

we surely can’t deny that, women like the kardashians have convinced millions of young girls they need to mutilate their bodies in order to be deemed worthy/acceptable in society.

i do think Social media plays a big part though OP, not just the people that are on it, everyone including the kardashians are victims of this now.

all we can do is have discussions and try to steer the young women in our lives towards different women out there.

WandaWonder · 04/01/2023 11:02

Maybe the amount of followers on social media is not the way to judge a good role model?

Gwenhwyfar · 04/01/2023 11:05

"Do you actually have teenage daughters?"

Sounds like OP was recently a teenager and is talking about her own experience.

Thedaysthatremain · 04/01/2023 11:07

Are these women claiming to be good role models?

MilkshakesBringAllTheCoosToTheYard · 04/01/2023 11:16

If you'd had different role models, would you have been kinder to other women, I wonder?

The Kardashians aren't really doing anything wrong - they're building a brand the way thousands of other people have done. They were amongst the first to do this in the social media age and they've done it well. Some people might view them as empire builders.

Cardi B exemplifies rap culture. There are hundreds of men talking about the same things as she does, her sexuality is linked to that culture and that's how she makes her money.

Neither are particularly interesting to me, but the pearl clutching 'it's disgusting' is a little misogynistic from where I'm sitting.

EarringsandLipstick · 04/01/2023 11:17

👏👏👏👏👏

Well said.

SteveBuscemisRheumyEye · 04/01/2023 11:18

My DD (10) thinks Greta Thornburg is pretty awesome 🤷🏾‍♀️

EarringsandLipstick · 04/01/2023 11:25

And my sports-mad boys love the successful female soccer players eg Raphinoe, Aluko, McCabe. They've followed the recent successes of the Irish & UK teams with interest.

Their choice of role models is linked to their interest (sport) & they don't make an issue out of female / male, apart from discovering & being amazed at the pay gap between men & women who play soccer professionally.

IDontCareMatthew · 04/01/2023 11:26

Infuriated? Really?
