What was this from the chippy?

Ordered Scollops . Expecting actual fishy things. Instead I got potato deep fried in batter. WTF? What are they? Had already got home so couldn't question it.

That's what a scollop is!

MrsWhites · 01/01/2023 13:54

Yeah scallops would be fried potato slices at my chippy too!

Magenta65 · 01/01/2023 13:55

Potato scallops. If you walked into any chippy round me (s.Wales) and asked for scallops that’s what you’d get. Lovely!

Chip shop scalloped potatoes, yum. Surely the price was a hint that you weren't getting the expensive shellfish?

VogueDarling · 01/01/2023 13:55

That's exactly what it should be from chippy- potato scallops (but where I'm from we call then fritters makes more sense to me)

whataboutsecondbreakfast · 01/01/2023 13:56

It's a potato scallop. Lovely things Grin

belowfrozen · 01/01/2023 13:56

Exactly what it is. Potato scallop. Love them

travelmad · 01/01/2023 13:56

I wish I could get one of those scollops here - I loved them when I was a kid in the Midlands. Battered potato slices! Now I live by the sea so if I ordered scollops I would get the fish, they don't seem to do potato scollops around here.

Pieceofpurplesky · 01/01/2023 13:57

It's not a sea creature scallop at the chippy. Just flat, battered potato

Oldraver · 01/01/2023 13:58

I love chippy scallops but have only had them in Brum

Adviceneeded200 · 01/01/2023 13:58

Yeah! Love potato scallops. Haven't seen them since I was a kid!

I can understand the confusion! Our chippy (we live on the coast) does a scallops in garlic butter dish which is the fishy type!

GoodVibesHere · 01/01/2023 13:59

Oh I've never ordered them as I don't like seafood and assumed that's what it is!!

Nightynightnight · 01/01/2023 13:59

In Scotland we call them fritters. Highlight of my childhood was when mum found a dead slug in hers. Yum.

DampSquids · 01/01/2023 13:59

Were you expecting scallops from a chipper?

It was a bit cheap, but I have never heard of a potato scallop! (East Midlands)

I really fancied sea creature scollops!

I always thought that they were a Southeast thing, I sometimes had them as a kid, visiting relatives there.

I don't recall them here in the Northeast.

MassiveSalad22 · 01/01/2023 14:03

Scollop ≠ scallop when it comes to the chippy

spanieleyes · 01/01/2023 14:05

No, we have them in West Yorkshire, scollops here, rather than scallop but same thing. It was my job to make them when I worked in the chippy, after a while you would be promoted to cake maker if you were good enough!

Montague22 · 01/01/2023 14:06

Potato scallop, battered thick slice of potato.
Our local one does a variation on fish cake too which is two thinner slices of potato with some cod in the middle, then battered.

spanieleyes · 01/01/2023 14:08

@Montague22
Yes, that's a cake. As opposed to a fishcake, which is the birds eye version!

TrentCrimm · 01/01/2023 14:08

Scollops are 50p in our local chippy, can't imagine anyone thinking they're getting any seafood for that Grin

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 01/01/2023 14:10

When I was growing up a scallop was a piece of fish between two slices of potato but now it seems to just be a potato scallop.
Rarely see the fish version anymore. I used to love them but when I have managed to find one they've been dripping in oil inside and the fish but was terrible.

Abraxan · 01/01/2023 14:10

In South Yorkshire and a scallop would be a friend and battered potato slices.
We definitely don't have the seafood scallops in any of our local chip shops!

Montague22 · 01/01/2023 14:10

@spanieleyes 🤣I never worked in a chippy. Lots of bar work instead!

Found a recipe though
