Ordered Scollops . Expecting actual fishy things. Instead I got potato deep fried in batter. WTF? What are they? Had already got home so couldn't question it.

My mum, London born and bred, used to slice up cold boiled potatoes and fry them. She always called them scollop potato. No batter involved, but delicious.
I still love them with a runny fried egg.

viques · 01/01/2023 15:09

Just googled them. They look wonderful, nothing like double carbs on a cold day, or triple carbs if you bap wrap them!

I would have them with brown sauce I think. Wonders if local chippy fancies a menu change for ‘23.

dementedpixie · 01/01/2023 15:12

We call them potato fritters in Scotland

I really fancied sea creature scollops!

Scallops. You were never going to find them in a chipper and they'd be really expensive even if you did.

You can't possibly have paid a very small amount for a bit of fried potato and think you weer going to get a very expensive shellfish instead?

strawberry2017 · 01/01/2023 15:20

You clearly don't go to chip shops very often 😂

When have you actually ever seen scallops in a chippy?

what did you pay for it?

dementedpixie · 01/01/2023 15:22

It's 70p a fritter in my local chip shop. You wouldn't get an actual scallop for that price

Iamnotausername · 01/01/2023 15:39

Ooh. They don't sell scallops (of the potato kind) where I live now but I miss them. Delicious with loads of salt and vinegar. The local "delicacy" here is battered spam!

reallyhatewinter · 01/01/2023 15:43

I'm originally from the midlands, it's a potato scallop. Fish shops don't do fish scallops, only potato scallops where I'm from. And who would want deep fried fish scallops - that would sacrilege!

caninecalamity · 01/01/2023 15:43

TheVolturi · 01/01/2023 14:30

They're called a dab here in lancs.

Yes!! I was just going to say that!

HelloCanYouHearMe · 01/01/2023 15:45

Potato fritter to DP (Notts)
Scollop to me (Warks)

Scollop batch with lashings of salt and vinegar is the best thing ever

anon2022anon · 01/01/2023 15:52

@SwedishEdith were you in Hull by any chance? It's a pattie, flavoured with sage, by the sound of it

NewBootsAndRanty · 01/01/2023 16:02

My dad used to make these when I was little and called them fairies - anyone else heard them called that?

Francisca459 · 01/01/2023 16:04

Scollops are slices of potato covered in batter and deep fried. They have them in Yorkshire, The cheapest thing in the fish and chip ship. Add mushy peas and you have a poor man's hot dinner. There is no fish in them and no-one would expect any. Fish is very expensive.

Adviceneeded200 · 01/01/2023 16:04

@FurAndFeathers

Yes! All our chippy have fishy scallops (it's a fishing town) and they were sold in Whitby chippys too, when we went there.

The price is the differentiator tho!

My mums from Wigan, she calls them a smack

I learned this from a friend who lived in Wigan. "Do you want a smack?" he asked, I declined and offered him a punch. Luckily we resolved matters before fisticuffs started. I did, however, want a scallop.

knittingaddict · 01/01/2023 16:08

Surely the price would have suggested that it wasn't a freh scallop? Potato scallops must be much cheaper. Also tricky to cook a scallop well in a fish and chip shop and to be in good condition when you got home.

LeopardPrintHo · 01/01/2023 16:09

I used to love a scollop buttie walking home from a night out in my teens!

A fish cake is what you are describing, fish slices deep fried in batter.

A rissole is fish made into rounds and covered in breadcrumbs

Hellocatshome · 01/01/2023 16:09

Looking forward to the day OP finds out the Ice-cream van sells oysters 🤣

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 01/01/2023 16:16

Never heard of them before I moved to the NW - now they’re my favourite!

Toddlerteaplease · 01/01/2023 16:25

@Adviceneeded200 we have a very posh chippy round here that dies them like that. That's why it threw me.

It was a bit cheap, but I have never heard of a potato scallop! (East Midlands)

I am also East Midlands - scollops are really popular around here. Every chippy does them (and I live in the chippy capital village of the East Midlands!!!!)

Toddlerteaplease · 01/01/2023 16:28

The very posh Chippy is called The Cods Scallops (or scollops). It sells fishy ones. I have never ever seen Scallops in any other chippy!

Toddlerteaplease · 01/01/2023 16:32

Could someone please explain why on earth you would deep fry and batter a Slice of potato, when you already have chips. It's just grim!

surreygirl1987 · 01/01/2023 16:32

Ha, a scallop is a potato fritter. Not sure if it's just a Midlands thing (I'm from the Midlands and I think I've only seen it called that there).
