Ordered Scollops . Expecting actual fishy things. Instead I got potato deep fried in batter. WTF? What are they? Had already got home so couldn't question it.

You're all making me want a chippy tea. I would drive to South Wales for scallops and a cheese rissole right now if I could.

Potato scallop, battered thick slice of potato.
Our local one does a variation on fish cake too which is two thinner slices of potato with some cod in the middle, then battered.

Fishcakes in Sheffield chip shops are fish sandwiched between two potato slices, then battered and fried.

Growing up in Doncaster a fishcake was mashed potato and fish which was either breaded or battered, then fried.

yadaya · 01/01/2023 14:13

Chippy's don't sell the sort of scollops you we're expecting 😂😂

Chip shop scollops are the best!!

TokyoSushi · 01/01/2023 14:13

I think you're pretty unlikely to get sea scallops in a chippy!

MoscowMules · 01/01/2023 14:14

Welsh here, south Wales to be specific Yeah a scallop is potato. Absolutely devine things!

I'm hungry now 🤣

RiverSkater · 01/01/2023 14:18

Ahhh a 6p scallop while walking home in the snow from primary school in Birmingham, A very happy memory you have just reminded me of OP.

Beginningless · 01/01/2023 14:18

They are called fritters in Scotland.

Decafflatteplease · 01/01/2023 14:19

God we love these like a giant chip!

Our chippy does them super crispy with load sof salt and vinegar on and they are sooo unhealthy but taste so good!

Catspyjamas17 · 01/01/2023 14:22

I love all kinds of scallop. The potato kind was the only one I was familiar with until I was an adult.

2023pending · 01/01/2023 14:28

My mums from Wigan, she calls them a smack

TheVolturi · 01/01/2023 14:30

They're called a dab here in lancs.

AdventFridgeOfShame · 01/01/2023 14:31

If you want seafood scallops from a chippy, you probably have to go to the Isle of Man.

LemonadePockets · 01/01/2023 14:31

It’s called a fritter in Scotland

Findyourneutralspace · 01/01/2023 14:33

You asked for scallops, and you got…scallops!

SwedishEdith · 01/01/2023 14:33

Our chippy did a savoury cake. Mashed potato with something else added but I don't know what it was. Then battered. Gorgeous but never see them now.

Sparkletastic · 01/01/2023 14:35

Lol at expecting an actual scallop from a chippy

Blowyourowntrumpet · 01/01/2023 14:35

I'm East Midlands too and have never heard this either. Sounds like a potato fritter.

wherearebeefandonioncrisps · 01/01/2023 14:35

When I lived in the West Midlands scollops were potato fritters.

Scallops are a shellfish. It has the letter 'a' in it and up until recent years used to be called scAllops not scollops.

UrsulaPandress · 01/01/2023 14:36

A slice of greasy heaven.

Never seen the ‘cake’ but quite fancy one now.

Dartmoorcheffy · 01/01/2023 14:36

The chippy where I used to live in greater Manchester did the best scollops and pea fritters I've ever had.

TulipTuesday · 01/01/2023 14:37

As a teenager I would go out on a Friday night with a fiver in my pocket. That would get me a 4 pack of cider, 10 fags and enough left over for 2 scallops from the chippy 😄

I love a scallop

heidihigh · 01/01/2023 14:39

To be fair I probably would have assumed it was seafood too as what you received we call a smack! (I grew up in the N West)

Jacksfesteringresentment · 01/01/2023 14:40

We called this a pasty where I'm from.
I used to have a pasty bap with cheese.

MatildaJayne · 01/01/2023 14:40

My mum used to do a knock off version which was just an oval chip, basically. No batter. 😢 I had no idea scallops were also a shellfish until I was an adult. 😂

WooMeOut · 01/01/2023 14:41

Why would you think you were getting sea scallops for, what, 75p? 😂

We call them scallops

My friend calls them dabs
