Ordered Scollops . Expecting actual fishy things. Instead I got potato deep fried in batter. WTF? What are they? Had already got home so couldn't question it.

You've lived a very sheltered life if you've never heard of them. Every chippy in the east and west midlands sell potatoes scallops. Always have.

@YouWithoutEnd you like a piece and fritter? That's what we'd call that in Glasgow. Never heard of a cob before.

@YouWithoutEnd what is a cob?

A bread roll or whatever you call it in your part of the country

DrunkOnHim · 01/01/2023 22:13

I don’t understand why you’re asking when you knew what they were as you said it in your OP. Confused

I'd call it a roll and fritter
A piece would be using slices of bread

It’s very cheap and calorific way of making spuds a bit ‘special’ when you’re skint and grafting a manual labour job for long hours.

so yeah. Probably pretty ‘grim’ for you 🙄

I think this was the point of the post. She should get back to her cats and her forced birth, pro life views.

@dementedpixie a cob is a loaf of bread from what I googled there.

I would get a roll and fritter, I wouldn't eat it In a piece.

You get cob rolls

evemillbank · 01/01/2023 22:18

Oh my god I love them!

Allsnotwell · 01/01/2023 22:24

Maybe the council should do a ‘guide’ to the midlands!

We’ve moved and sadly no scallops her!
No cobs either!

Lots of vinegar and salt and they’re lovely on a cold night!

I have lived a sheltered life. I'd never heard of scraps until mentioned on Mumsnet. Never heard them offered or anyone ask for them!

dementedpixie · 01/01/2023 22:38

I've only heard of scraps on here too
I know scallops are potato fritters. Maybe because of the scalloped shape. Google scalloped potatoes as it is a potato dish using sliced potatoes

yadaya · 01/01/2023 22:44

Yorkshire chip shops would blow your mind op....

I'm desperate for chips and a scollop with bits and loads of salt and vinegar.

I’m in the East Midlands and have never heard of them. Definitely not on the menu at the chip shops near here.

Our chippy did a savoury cake. Mashed potato with something else added but I don't know what it was. Then battered. Gorgeous but never see them now.

We'd call that a pattie in the north-east. Savoury potato, cheese and potato, corned beef and potato, fish and potato.

Delicious- definitely a thing in the north-east. My granny and mam used to make them.

But did ye gerrem from the chippa, like?

TangoAcid · 01/01/2023 23:10

@TenoringBehind they are on the menu. Probably just under a different rename. Potatoe fritter/scallop interchangeably.

Igglepiggleslittletoe · 01/01/2023 23:13

Ireland here. They used to be called potato cakes but have been called scallops in recent years. Think I am the only person in Ireland who does not like them.
