Ordered Scollops . Expecting actual fishy things. Instead I got potato deep fried in batter. WTF? What are they? Had already got home so couldn't question it.

OP posts:

Our local chippy does them double thick with a slice of fish inside the 2 scallops, all battered. They're amazing.

Wincarnis · 01/01/2023 14:44

We called them Scollops (not scallops) (north west)

could do with a couple right now 😀

BarbaraofSeville · 01/01/2023 14:45

My friend who moved from Devon to Leeds made the same mistake OP. But she realised when she saw the price they couldn't be the seafood kind.

But we do have proper fishcakes, ie the fish sandwiched in sliced potato and battered kind here.

YY to Isle of Man queenies, amazing.

Squishedstormtrooper · 01/01/2023 14:46

You’ve made me want one. Loads of salt and vinegar and in a barm (white with loads of butter).

We called this a pasty where I'm from.
I used to have a pasty bap with cheese.

Just looked them up and they were flavoured with sage and onion. God, I used to love them.

I never knew this! Just thought it was a bit poncy of our local chippy to have scallops on the menu

PritiPatelsMaker · 01/01/2023 14:49

Oh I could just eat one now with some mushy peas!

Daydreamer22 · 01/01/2023 14:50

Used to love buying chippy scallops, sometimes known as ‘specials in the area I group up in the north west. They were like ten pence or similar so easily brought from the chippy and eaten with salt vinegar and ketchup.

Scallop barn with a splash of mayo. We have them in preston

heyyellowyellow · 01/01/2023 14:50

The mighty fritter! Food of the gods.

To be fair I probably would have assumed it was seafood too as what you received we call a smack! (I grew up in the N West)

I grew up in the north west and known as a scallop or a ‘special’ round my way depending on the chippy

PritiPatelsMaker · 01/01/2023 14:53

My old DF always used to call them "smacks" too. Haven't heard that in years! Wink

Thoughtful2355 · 01/01/2023 14:54

because they are scollops not scallops

mummydoris2006 · 01/01/2023 14:56

I'm from the East Midlands and if I ordered a scallop I'd expect a large slice of potato fried in batter

TinaWeymouthsBass · 01/01/2023 14:57

As a teenager in the West Midlands in the early 80s my mom used to give me dinner money every day, me and my mates used to have a 5p scallop from the chippy and spend the rest on cigarettes which were sold by the newsagents singularly for 10p each with one free match!😱

Forever42 · 01/01/2023 14:59

Never heard of the potato ones. I would have probably expected a bargain shellfish too! I did have deep fried scallops from a chippy in Australia. They were delicious.

jmh740 · 01/01/2023 14:59

I would have expected a slice of battered potato, in Lancashire they are often called dabs

DisforDarkChocolate · 01/01/2023 15:00

In my childhood this would have been two slices of potato with a small piece of cod in the middle, battered and fried. Oh how I miss them, nothing better.

I was quite shocked in early adulthood when I found out there was a type of scallop that was shellfish, rather than potato.

Georgeskitchen · 01/01/2023 15:03

Scallop, slice, fritter call em.what you like, delicious!! For a real Lancashire treat ask for a mushy pea fritter yum yum

Mammyloveswine · 01/01/2023 15:03

Oooh my mam always made corned beef scallops!! Served with jarred mixed pickled! They were delish!

I must try and recreate them..

Luckycatt · 01/01/2023 15:04

First 20 years of my life in west mids where scollops were in every chippy.
Second 20 years of my life in East mids and never seen a scollop.

newtb · 01/01/2023 15:05

Back in the 70s chip shops were reducing the amount of fish in a fishcake. Think legally it had to bé 12%. They called them a 'savoury' so they couldn't be prosecuted. Then they were fined for not containing the herb savoury. About the same time, in Liverpool, the 'P' plate on cars was described as P for potato due to all the potato farmerd with new Range Rovers. The price of a portion of chips went through the roof. It was blamed on the hot summer.

CovertImage · 01/01/2023 15:07

I my bit of Lancs where I grew up these were called dabs. You could get a dab butty in the chippy for a tiny amount of cash, I used to love 'em
