What would your career be if money were no object?

Inspiredby a colleague who has suddenly quit work to open up a life coaching/counselling business. I have a feeling, not sure why, that she won a not insignificant lottery amount. If you could do anything you wanted without worrying about money now or in the future, what would you do as your job?

Realistically, I'd probably not work at all and would be quite happy.

However, as that doesn't answer my own question 🤣 I will say I'd open up a wool shop or something and hire people to run crafty classes. I wouldn't want to run them myself though. Although, I don't want to deal with people at all somedays so maybe a shop isn't a good idea...

Ooh another idea... I'd train as some sort of jewellery maker/silversmith.

I have ethical issues with things like diamonds so I'd only use vintage stones.

In reality I know nothing about designing or making jewellery or where to source good second hand jeweller

I'd have a crack at anything that took my fancy - a few more pointless degrees under my belt, and a lot of random skill acquisition. Historic crafts, languages, music - all the things I try to do on a budget now, but with more guidance and (hopefully) more success. Plus more training in historic equitation with my horses, and historical martial arts.

I'm not sure any of these really constitute a career - other than a career dabbler - but I'd have a lot of fun with it.

Someone beat me to archaeologist!

I’d keep doing my job (teacher) but drop down to part time (ideally 50%) so that the work could be done within school hours.

FourTeaFallOut · 21/12/2022 12:51

I can't think of any job that sounds better than just not having a job.

ChristmasTunesAlready · 21/12/2022 12:56

I would retrain and study something like health and fitness then start my own business teaching fitness classes or become a gym instructor/personal trainer.
I love exercise and would love for it to be my career as it wouldn't be an 'extra' thing for me to do between my full time job and being a mum...it would be my job!

InTropicalTrumpsLand · 21/12/2022 13:01

I'd want to be one of those people who travel the world, write about it in their websites (places to see, where to eat, etc) and somehow live off it. I bloody love travelling, but living in a third world country means it's eye watering.

PriamFarrl · 21/12/2022 13:18

Another cat rescuer here.

housemaus · 21/12/2022 13:33

Cattery owner. I'd make it the most luxurious, ridiculous place and spend all day snuggling and playing with them so they weren't lonely. In between that, I'd do what I do now (writing) but freelance and only take interesting, nice-to-work-with clients.

Shitfather · 21/12/2022 13:43

I’m in my dream job, but I’d happily quit to become a travel writer if money wasn’t an issue.

Exactly!

cjh1969 · 21/12/2022 13:47

I often fantasise about this.

My plan would be to buy a small holding and stock it up with a few farm animals. Then open it up to inner-city kids struggling with mental health issues, which could come and stay and be at one with nature, helping to care for the animals. Personally, I find animals so therapeutic. They don't judge and they don't want much except shelter and food and little love.

benisright · 21/12/2022 13:56

Would love to be a charity worker, helping people in need.

OP, an ex colleage of mine also switched out of banking to become a life coach. She spent a year obtaining a coaching license before quitting. Not sure about lottery wins but sometimes there is a calling.

pinneddownbytabbies · 21/12/2022 13:57

Horticulture of some sort, maybe research.

IAmTheFire · 21/12/2022 14:04

One of the arsehole holiday vloggers, I’d basically live on the road

TeresaCrowd · 21/12/2022 14:13

Big Dog home boarding. So many options out there for smaller dogs and those big slobbery beasts deserve the best too. We never really found a good option for ours outside of friends and family when we went away. Golden Retriever size and up I suppose. I'd like enough land with a good bit of water in it for off lead swimming and playing and a good spot for a sleep.

creaky123 · 21/12/2022 14:29

I'd go back to university and study a language, I speak a couple reasonably well but not well enough to be a translator. I always wanted to do that- thought it would be so interesting the people and situations you'd encounter- but my parents discouraged it. No idea why!

Gistbury · 21/12/2022 14:29

Postman

allfurcoatnoknickers · 21/12/2022 14:37

I'd still be in the art world. I love it - worked for an auction house and also a contemporary art gallery, but ended up leaving because the money and job security is terrible.

Acinonyx2 · 21/12/2022 14:46

Another one for a bookshop - themed new and second hand. Somewhere by the sea or a nice lake would be grand. Out back - an animal rescue lot. All day-to-day managed by others so I can swan in and out from my anthropological fieldwork and writing.

BCBird · 21/12/2022 14:49

Archeologist, restorer of fabrics etc in a stately home or curator of museum. Obstacles to this are: I'm clumsy, hate cleaning and am scared of heights 🤣

VikingLady · 21/12/2022 14:55

Breastfeeding counsellor. But I can't afford the thousands of pounds for NCT training.

SomeCommonThing · 21/12/2022 14:56

I'd have stayed in hospice nursing.

Tiredmum100 · 21/12/2022 14:57

I'd love to take in rescue cats and kittens and re home then.
