What would your career be if money were no object?

Inspiredby a colleague who has suddenly quit work to open up a life coaching/counselling business. I have a feeling, not sure why, that she won a not insignificant lottery amount. If you could do anything you wanted without worrying about money now or in the future, what would you do as your job?

Realistically, I'd probably not work at all and would be quite happy.

However, as that doesn't answer my own question 🤣 I will say I'd open up a wool shop or something and hire people to run crafty classes. I wouldn't want to run them myself though. Although, I don't want to deal with people at all somedays so maybe a shop isn't a good idea...

Dog trainer

I’ve looked into it a few times but the income is too low and too erratic when you are fitting it in around family life

Was the TV series Ally McBeal?! I’m actually about to study law part time as redundancy forced a major career rethink!

Apparently there was a huge uptick in women taking up law at uni following Ally McBeal. If anything, I thought it was a cautionary tale but she had great suits.

I'd buy a very big house and become a foster carer. I'd also set up a home school in the very big house (which would have an outbuilding for this very purpose)! It's something I've always wanted to do, I sadly don't have the funds but love nothing more than help children develop and grow. There's so many needing the love and support of a stable home, it breaks my heart. 😔

I'd own and run a cat cafe, or be an archivist in a museum or records office.

I can't think of a single job I'd want to do if money was no object to the point I didn't NEED to work. I'd like to be a perpetual student. I'd do degrees in maths, physics, something to do with data science or programming, and a language (not at the same time).

If I had to work, maybe I'd be a physiotherapist, as when I did my yoga and pilates teacher training I really loved the anatomy side of it all. Bodies are fascinating.

RudeElfTheRainDear · 23/12/2022 09:22

I'd be tempted by perpetual student-hood except I recently did a degree as an adult and 50% of the course drove me mad. There was far too much focus on (bullshit) employability skills and too little actual learning the subject. Literally I think 50% or less of the course was about the subject and 50% or more was about employment skills, such as project management, preparing for appraisals, designing posters - for a biological science degree. Despite it being a part time degree almost universally attended by adults who'd been working for years.

The jump-through-hoops element really put me off proceeding with any more study.

I must admit id.like to do a finance degree or something similar.

As for anatomy, there was "Dr von Hagens – who has toured his Body Worlds exhibits all across the globe – is perhaps best known in the UK for performing the country’s first public human autopsy for 170 years in 2002."

and he did a some tv shows too on anatomy.

Something to do with animals like a rescue centre or a place for animals yo come when owners go on holiday

goinback · 25/12/2022 00:14

Artist/ Life model. Not enough time to paint. Love the process of modelling for students, find it quite relaxing too.

winterpastasalad · 25/12/2022 08:22

Travel writer, except the magazines I wrote for wouldn't require much writing, they'd pay very well for a few nicely captioned photographs.
Or, own a bookshop (new) with an adjoining coffee shop. Neither of these would somehow involve much work, they'd run themselves and my role would be to browse the books, maybe do a few jigsaws and drink the coffee. Oh, I might do a few story telling sessions for children. These ventures would be very lucrative.

PermanentTemporary · 25/12/2022 08:32

The job i do now (speech therapy in hospital) but for about 2 days a week.

poorbuthappy · 25/12/2022 08:35

Wedding / event planner.

KangarooKenny · 25/12/2022 08:38

I’d still do the same job, but go home a bit earlier

Luana1 · 25/12/2022 09:22

Interesting that my former career has been mentioned by a couple of posters. If money was no object I would retrain in herbal medicine and nutritional therapy.

Betwixlass · 25/12/2022 10:28

Product design but it seems that isn’t for me. I do have an emerging career doing a hobby I love that I am really excited about though.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 25/12/2022 10:46

Traffic Enforcement near schools .
Instead of people leaving "Please don't park here" notes , they'd get a whapping great yellow sticker ticket . and a fine

Pottering about in the (my own) garden.

Is that a career? Xmas Grin

Same here!

AceofPentacles · 25/12/2022 10:53

Writer/author or anything I can do from a studio at the bottom of a massive garden

LunaTheCat · 25/12/2022 10:59

I would still work 3 days per week as a GP but I would cut my hrs done each day so I got away at 6 and not at 8 pm and not feel so utterly exhausted.I love my job and love helping people.
I wouldn’t have to do after hrs shifts so I could supplement my income for the nicer things.
I would take long holidays and travel.. at the moment I want to go and do an African Safari.
I would garden and help to support charity.

12roundsofwhitelowfatspread · 25/12/2022 11:00

Enterusername111333 · 26/12/2022 00:42
