We have been stuck in Chatham now for four hours. Got about 7 miles maybe? Think we will be stuck in the car overnight now.

It snowed about 3-4 inches in one hour.

Bloody hell. That's going to be a cold night! Do you have supplies in the car?

fedup0987 · 11/12/2022 23:16

Why did you go out in the snow?

Marmitepot · 11/12/2022 23:17

Oh how grim. I remember people being stuck on the M11 all night a few years ago.
good luck!

Oh shit, how far are you from home/your destination?

NoSquirrels · 11/12/2022 23:18

Have you got cold weather kit in the car?

failedmydog · 11/12/2022 23:18

I'd bet OP didn't go out "in the snow" it just snowed when she/ he was driving somewhere..
It happens.

Do you have supplies?

Always reminded me my dad used to say always have a blanket a shovel and a Mars bar in the car!

Never water, just the above.

KnickerlessParsons · 11/12/2022 23:18

My first thought would be "where can I have a wee?"

How are you managing, wee wise?

whataboutya · 11/12/2022 23:19

Hope you have plenty of fuel for keeping the car idling so the heat stays on. And plenty of charge on your phone!
Is there a camaraderie with the other strandees?

fedup0987 · 11/12/2022 23:16

Why did you go out in the snow?

Went to see mum. Had no idea snow was forecast. It started snowing so we left. Into carnage and not a chance in hell of getting back to her house now.

Yes all feed and warm. Blankets and water in the car.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 11/12/2022 23:20

Oh that's miserable OP. Are you able to keep warm enough?

IneedanewTV · 11/12/2022 23:21

I doubt the OP just went for a drive in the snow. I live in Kent and it suddenly started snowing and didn’t stop for hours. Roads were gridlocked with abandoned cars.

CrapBucket · 11/12/2022 23:23

You say 'we', I'm hoping that's you and another adult rather than on your own with kids?

I don't have car stranded experience but I do have train stranded experience. My advice... Don't drink anything unless you have to. And find a way to empty your bladder sooner rather than later. Whatever toilet point there is will be grimmer the more time that passes.

whataboutya · 11/12/2022 23:24

How far to go home? Would it be a walk? Or you have kids with you? Ugh I don't envy you Flowers

Stuckinsnowinkent · 11/12/2022 23:24

Dd has wet herself. Ds had peed in a cup and out the window ( note to self, that's not hot chocolate in the cup any more!).

So many people out of the streets waking about and pushing cars. It's been very friendly and good spirited so far. We did fill up with diesel two hours ago. We are out of town now but right between M2 / M20 but I think lots of crashes on motorway. Lorry jack knifed on our road.

Yeah, my colleague was stuck (also Kent) for hours this evening and that was my first concern! They ended up walking the last few miles, too many abandoned cars and they kept sliding and worrying they'd hit pedestrians.
It's chaos in much of the south east. Our village is barely accessible, people being rescued (by locals with tractors and 4x4s) from every road in/out and many stranded. Local pub B&B now full and appealing to locals for empty rooms for stranded people to stay in.

Problem was, it came down so much so quickly that a lot of people were out in it by accident. The first half an hour was sleety and didn't settle so everyone assumed it would be fine, then it really picked up and a few hours later we had 3 inches of snow.

fedup0987 · 11/12/2022 23:27

Oh no OP. I bet you wish you'd stayed now but you were never to know this would happen!!
Is there no hotels nearby or are you stuck on the motorway?

Stuckinsnowinkent · 11/12/2022 23:27

3 kids with us in the back. I just want to get home in piece it's been scarey seeing people wheel spinning

That's my worst fear of being stuck in traffic.

jaundicedoutlook · 11/12/2022 23:27

Had to drive back to Kent / Sussex borders this evening from London and it was genuinely scary in places. Outside lane of M25 was fully snowed and you could see skid tracks where others had gone into it. A21 had several abandoned cars on the side of the road and visibility was very low. Of course the one time a 4x4 would be useful I’d taken DH’s car which is rear wheel drive and automatic. Couldn’t get up the drive in it, so had to leave it by the side of the road, then fell on my arse walking up to the house. Won’t be doing that again in a hurry.

Hope everyone still out there gets back safely.

I've seen some video of problems on Bluebell Hill tonight, a jackknifed lorry. Horrendous snow conditions

Mañanarama · 11/12/2022 23:28

OP if you can get to Chatham Premier Inn there are family rooms available tonight for £50

Oh that’s awful op. I hope you and your dc are ok?

CrapBucket · 11/12/2022 23:30

Have you made friends with other drivers? You could make a whatsapp group with the car in front and behind. Get them to do the same and eventually you will have the people at the front of the queue. (Plus someone can fall in love and make a rom com film of it all.)
