We have been stuck in Chatham now for four hours. Got about 7 miles maybe? Think we will be stuck in the car overnight now.

It snowed about 3-4 inches in one hour.

Hope you get home safely. Its not just the UK. I'm in Canada, admittedly we don't get the amount of snow some parts do but it's always chaos here too when it does snow. I have all seasons but I still skidded a few times the other week on my way to work. I hope some kids do get the day off . You can't beat a snow day☃️

Aren't there loads of snowy days in Canada?

Onesailwait · 12/12/2022 03:22

@EmmaAgain22 - No not where I am. We usually get a few days in February, sometimes November & last year we had a white Christmas. We've had a couple of mini dumps in the last few weeks. It's generally a big news story when we get some. A couple weeks ago Vancouver almost came to a standstill. Some people were stuck on the road for 8hrs. Nightmare

LlareggubTripAdviser · 12/12/2022 03:38

We are on the M25. Left Sussex at 6pm when realised we may not get out if we didn't leave then. Long awaited week away in Prague.. leaving from Luton. No trains running .

We have been going 9.5 hrs and still have 1 to go... the M25 was completely ungritted .. sussex even worse . 40 min trip to nearest town took 5 hours.. our flight leaves at 9:10am..

The M25 looks like this...

Absolutely horrific journey home! We were at an event and although it was sleet when we left, I had no idea what would happen. 7 hours later we're home.

Amazingly helpful people along the way.

I’m in Tunbridge Wells, the drive home from Heathfield this afternoon was quite scary. It was pretty clear when I’d gone out but I basically drove home in a blizzard, in a dinged up automatic Fiesta with my 3yo and 1yo in the back (and I only passed my test 3 months ago)- mercifully got home just before it started coming down really thick and settling in the roads… I live in the dip between two steep hills and watching people try (and fail) to get to the top of the road has been quite entertaining!

It was forecast.

This.

I didn't hear about snow falling until this morning! I check my weather app every single day religiously and snow wasn't predicted.
Hope you get home safe op!

It's been predicted for about 5 days now.

Mrstwiddle · 12/12/2022 04:42

@Onesailwait you can’t be far from me! I drive to Vancouver for work and the snow a few weeks back caused chaos on my commute home, too many drivers without winter tires!

isthismylifenow · 12/12/2022 04:49

How scary. Hope you are home safe and sound OP

Travelling later this morning from Bristol to Hastings - or at least was hoping to…

Cherryana · 12/12/2022 04:59

I hope you are all warm in bed and will take a snow day for yourselves after such an ordeal. That is so frightening.

Because of your thread I am going to get much better prepared in my car - thank you and I am sorry that happened.

Msloverlover · 12/12/2022 05:03

We were stuck for 3 hours 5 miles from home. Our forecast clearly showed sleet and not snow. We live by the coast - it never snows like this here! We left when it started snowing and within 10 minutes it was at least an inch thick on the ground. It was bloody terrifying - never been in conditions like it. The biggest issue was that the roads had not been gritted. Many people stuck all night in their cars around Hastings. No emergency services in sight. We were lucky enough to be travelling with friends who had a 4x4 so we’re able to jump in with them, but if we hadn’t we would have still been there until very recently.

Hi, check the roads before you leave. It’s not snowed overnight but all the main roads into Hastings were blocked yesterday and there will now be loads of abandoned cars. There are country lanes you can use in but they may be treacherous if not been gritted.

BloaterW1 · 12/12/2022 02:39

There are winter tyres in the UK just not many people buy them outside of Scotland and likely people wouldnt bother changing back to summer tyres. All season tyres would be fine or snow socks.

That’s why it should be mandatory.

lightisnotwhite · 12/12/2022 05:16

@LlareggubTripAdviser Wowsers! Hope you are ok. Fingers crossed you get a flight although I guess the planes are needing to be de iced before take off so that might buy you time.

I can hear the A3 ( a major road from the coast to London) from my house. You always know when it’s snow and ice or Christmas Day because that’s the only time it goes quiet.

Hooverphobe · 12/12/2022 05:18

@AngeloMysterioso well done! You must have a cool head about you to handle that with aplomb just 3 months after passing your test! 👊

LlareggubTripAdviser · 12/12/2022 05:23

Lightsnotwhite I am Afraid it's got worse. We are just past j25 of M25. We have been here since 3:25am and haven't moved an inch .

Nothing on twitter
Nothing on highways agency except 'there's lots of snow' ..

We don't need minute but minute update.. but 'there's a big accident and we've closed it for 2 hours while we sort it out' would be appreciated. We just passed a turn off.. perhaps 'get off here as you won't go anywhere for 2 hours' oils have been messaged. But nothing . No emergency services , nothing . We are fine as fit and 50... but many have kids in the car .. and babies ..

lightisnotwhite · 12/12/2022 05:35

@LlareggubTripAdviser . I agree. Decent signage advising motorists would be better than mandatory snow tyres or whatever other unrealistic ideas posters are suggesting. It shouldn’t be hard to have good info on the overhead motorway screens.

I have to force myself to listen to radio 2 for traffic updates when driving long distances. It’s one of the few ways to get some sort of update on what happening generally.

kateandme · 12/12/2022 05:42

Do those supplies kits have a particular name.i want my mum to do one but u think she would lean unto it note if it had an official name.🙄

Tara336 · 12/12/2022 05:56

I had to drive from Dorset to North London yesterday as DF was taken into hospital, luckily we were on the home stretch when the snow started coming down and got home fairly easily. I hope you git home OK.

Wagsandclaws · 12/12/2022 05:57

We were going to be leaving in an hour. Somerset to Gillingham.

Does anyone know if that's badly affected? Gosh last time I remember this happening was when I was pg with Ds who's now 13.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 12/12/2022 05:58

HowDoWeDoThisPlease · 12/12/2022 02:07

Download the metoffice weather app op for future reference. They’ve had a snow warning for the south east corner for last evening and overnight on there for a good 24 hours or more.

Agree with this. BBC weather isn't great.

Met office app had warnings about the snow on Sunday. I used to live in that part of Kent and my school was shut a few times because of snow, and my village would be cut off.

2catsandhappy · 12/12/2022 06:30

I hope you are safe now. This Christmas story is going to be a legend in your family.

DarkNecessities · 12/12/2022 06:30

I hope you’re ok OP

We also got caught out last night as it started snowing 10 mins into a 45 min journey. We made it home ok.

There DEFINITELY was no snow forecast on the bbc weather app for our area. I was checking it throughout the day.

DS has had to go out in it this morning. I hope he’s ok.
