We have been stuck in Chatham now for four hours. Got about 7 miles maybe? Think we will be stuck in the car overnight now.

It snowed about 3-4 inches in one hour.

Weather forecast was wrong, even for London, snow came several hours earlier than forecast. Or at least the one presented by someone on tv.

ABBAsnumberonefan · 12/12/2022 07:51

In fact forecast literally means predict or estimate - ffs.

Eastereggs1 · 12/12/2022 07:53

JingsMahBucket · 12/12/2022 07:17

Why aren’t the authorities pre-gritting the roads before a weather incident? This is terrible mismanagement.

Grit doesn’t work in heavy snow or if it’s colder than -4c

Lol it wasn't wrong, it was right. It forecasted snow and it snowed.

That is literally the meaning of forecast.

Sorry but you have to be stupid if you believe its meant to be accurate. It never has been and never will be.

MrsSkylerWhite · 12/12/2022 07:57

Wasn’t it forecast some time in advance?

hope you’re all ok this morning.

Grit doesn't do anything if it's buried under a couple of inches of snow. This sort of fall you need to snow plough then grit and its difficult to do that when the roads are full of traffic and abandoned cars.

CharityShopChic · 12/12/2022 08:04

We were severely hit by the "beast from the east" in Scotland about 4 or 5 years ago.

Gritters are pointless when there is a huge dump of snow as the snow just lies on the grit. I also think there is a general lack of "respect" for the snow, loads of people think they;ll be OK or that the warnings don't apply to them. Everyt time we get severe snowy weather here there are people stuck on motorways because they think "only travel if essential" applies to them.

I hope you're home safe OP and it does seem that in this situation that the volume of snow is now predicted. But we all need to get better at watching the weather forecasts carefully throughout the winter and changing plans accordingly.

pd339 · 12/12/2022 08:04

That's why they issued the weather warnings. Doh!

TravelJohn Unisex Disposable Urinal Pack of 6 amzn.eu/d/adgt6Rm

definitely going get some of these in my car!

Ha ha ha, I've kept a pack of these in my car since public toilets were closed due to covid. I haven't had to use them yet, but it's good to know they're there if I need them.

Riverlee · 12/12/2022 08:07

Also in Kent. This amount of snow wasn’t forecast, and it fell very quickly. Also, wasn’t forecast to a lot later, ie during the night.

It has caught people out.

twinmum2007 · 12/12/2022 08:07

I'm in Kent too and you're right. Huge huge flakes that, because the ground was so cold, laid immediately instead of melting like it usually does. Within 20.minutes it was enough to build a big snowman. After an hour, my DS had built 3. They looked a bit spooky tbh. I was v glad to look out this morning and see them still in the same place and not any closer to the house. I may have watched too.much Dr Who as a child..

Many years ago was stuck on the Thelwall viaduct for hours. A lorry had jack-knived in snow. No shoulder, nothing. Was very happy not to have had a last coffee before leaving work. When I got moving went to the nearest pub for a wee. A 40minute journey had taken nearly 5 hours.
Thinking of you OP.

Well i looked on met office yesterday and SE england had a yellow weather warning for snow and ice all day, now extended into tomorrow.

We had a sunday lunch booked and we cancelled because of the warnings.

BigsyMalone · 12/12/2022 08:16

So glad you got home safe OP. Poor everyone brrrr..

rka2017 · 12/12/2022 08:17

We also in kent snow predicted heavy snow on the way home from bluewater roads full of snow, luckily trains were running home and we got home by 8pm

That makes sense.

I haven't got the text in front of me now but as I recall it the Met Office forecast for some specialist users that was issued Late Saturday, early Sunday AM, was warning of a high probability of at least some snow from the middle of Sunday onwards for many locations in SE England.

Willmafrockfit · 12/12/2022 08:21

local radio was not confirming snow, the forecast said rain but rain turns to snow in the cold,
there was talk of snow at 5 or 6 but this was early! and bucket loads

Cornettoninja · 12/12/2022 08:21

How fcking hard is it to get the weather sort of right?*

Really fucking hard actually. Weather isn’t a stable phenomenon and impacts vary wildly depending on a thousand different things.

I hope everyone stuck is warm and safe now. I remember years ago in the midlands we had a freak load of sleet just before sunset (and rush hour) that immediately froze the roads into sheets of ice and ground the city to a complete standstill. I was on a bus as it happened during a twenty minute journey - sliding across a dual carriage way on a double decker was an experience! That driver was a superstar for getting control. Pubs did well that night if I remember correctly Grin

Hat, scarf and gloves

High vis in case you need to abandon the car

Torch

Willmafrockfit · 12/12/2022 08:23

i went home sunday lunch time, the local radio was saying people would wake up on monday morning to snow, it would arrive after 6
but it was snowing at 2.30 when i was driving home, i was lucky

boilingstormyseas · 12/12/2022 08:29

Three weather apps said no snow to flurries for yesterday afternoon here locally in Kent. There was a huge dump of snow in late afternoon.

RosesAndHellebores · 12/12/2022 08:29

I agree it started earlier than forecast (Surrey) here.

As a Maid of Kent I would warn anyone without a tractor not to go anywhere near Bluebell Hill when it's icy or snowy. It has always been uber treacherous. It's bad enough when the weather's fine.

Willmafrockfit · 12/12/2022 08:33

in nutley area the gritters couldnt get passed the cars stuck in the snow to do their job yesterday evening
